Terminal emulation and serial ports
I have to reinit a firewall that can only be done from its console port, and I do not have an XP system with Hyperterminal on it. So I went through the archive and learned that minicom could do the job for me. I installed it and went to configure it (minicom -s). I can set the speeds, but the challenge is selecting the serial device. I have a Serial-to-USB dongle, and when I connect it,

Kudzu and Zaptel Cards
Redhat has a 'Hardware Discovery Utility' called Kudzu. When I change cards, kudzu pops up and ask to remove/config the card. Most of the time kudzu has trouble recognizing the Digium Zaptel cards and calls them something wrong, like calling the TDM card a network card. I'm having a devil of a time getting 3 TE410P cards to come up with all green lights. For example one or two cards

I have a few oqo2 units that I use for testing, normally using the dongle for ethernet connection. Well supposedly they have atheros wifi. in dmseg I see: ath5k 0000:03:04.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17 ath5k 0000:03:04.0: registered as 'phy0' ath5k phy0: Couldn't identify radio revision. ath5k 0000:03:04.0: PCI INT A disabled I press magic <fnc-?> per

kudzu - fedora core 3
Hi list!: A question about the refinement of the configuration: Always when I start a domain kudzu (hardware detection daemon) ask me for remove hardware. I answer yes, but in the next boot kudzu ask again. I''m guessing that kudzu is asking for remove the «real» drivers that are inside the domU because the domainU was created copying the dom0 system in the domU. How can I deal with

Hotel ethernet via nmcli
Here I sit in my hotel room with my Cubie armv7 server with Centos7. They have an ethernet cable here, so most likely I will not need to resort to putting a WiFi USB dongle and trying to master nmcli. But I have to web authenticate to their portal with my personal information. Is that possible with a text web browser? I seem to recall that Centos has one. What to install? Of course,

network card / kudzu
When I have installed centOS, Kudzu says my network cards have been removed, and right after it finds them again and asks me to configure them? It looks like it is the same thing it finds that it just said was removed. There are 3 Relatek|RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ cards in there and it is all of them it will remove and reconfigure. It doesn't matter if I select ignore or reconfigure them, they

Installed plus kernel, kudzu did not see atheros wifi
I took the dive and installed the CentosPlus kernel. I remembered that I could always boot with the old kernel if things went south. But on reboot, kudzu wanted to delete the Atheros config. I told it not to, but.... Would a simple 'freshen' of madwifi-0.9.1-24.el4.at.i386.rpm ? an rpm -qa |grep wifi returns: madwifi-kmdl-2.6.9-34.0.2.EL-0.9.1-24.el4.at madwifi-0.9.1-24.el4.at

Why Kudzu, Why?
So I have a CentOS 5 machine, which I recently did a 'yum update' on. Everything went fine, but I rebooted as a precaution (just to confront any problems which might arise the first time after an update). And sure enough, when the machine came back up, the network didn't work. Luckilly, someone said (and I quote) 'mv /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.bak

Linux boot floppy to install over net
With all this going on, it seems to me there MUST be a floppy image that will load the minimum shell (including PCMCIA drivers!) and all over-the-net installs (HTTP, FTP, of NFS). That would really help on one old notebook I have. Oh, and of course this is for CentOS 4.2!

decTOP - Centos install fails but DSL frugal install worked
I got 4 of those decTOPs (http://www.dataevolution.com/dectop%20info%202.htm) and upgraded the memory to 512Mb. I cannot get Centos 5.0 to install. I have the keyboard mouse attached to an ATEN USB-PS/2 adapter (probably should try without this). I have a USB DVD/CDRW drive. The install CD boots just fine. But then the install says, "No CD" and takes me to Askmethods. So I use

Restarting mouse services
I move my notebook around my office. Sometimes I am using the internal pointers, sometimes a USB mouse, and sometimes a USB keyboard/mouse adapter that is plugged into a kvm (actually two of them). With one of these USB k/m adapters, when I plug in, the system fails to recognize the mouse (but no problem with the keyboard). The 2 adapters are the same brand/model (Aten), but the KVMs are

Recommend a mini or nano ITX system for Centos
I am looking into convising the boss to get me a mini-itx system to replace my workhorse notebook (I have to have a corp notebook and I can remote terminal into a Centos server from it). So I have been playing with one mini-itx system (the decTOP) and am looking at my options. I want a fast processor, 1Gb memory, LAN, 4USB, VGA. Firewall frustration
Well FWbuilder is NOT easy. The documentation does not match the current GUI. Now the box is locked up. I will have to pull it again, hook it up to a kybd/VGA and reset iptables.... Maybe Shoreline with webmin.... Problem is I want a REAL router/firewall with little work. Both public and private nets have routable addresses. No NATing for me! I just help write the RFC ;) And all the

Centos 5 install failed compounded - no CD?
First off, there is no access into the bios on this unit It will boot from the hard drive or a USB CD. I have a USB DVD/CDRW. The system will boot from it. But if I just press enter to install off the CD, I end up at the askmethod menu. I press the local CD option and am told, no CD. Help?
