Serial port fun: CentOS 4.8 (32-bit) vs. CentOS 5.4 (64-bit)
I am in the process of migrating from running CentOS 4.8 (32-bit) to
CentOS 5.4 (64-bit) on my AMD Sempron(tm) Processor LE-1300 system (it
is running CentOS 4.8 32-bit because the disk images are from a
previous PIII system), and things are 'interesting' WRT how the Lava
Computer mfg Inc Quattro-PCI card is being handled.
lspci (on CentOS 4.8 32-bit) yields:

Kickstart, package always selected
I'm trying to kickstart a Centos 4.1 system with the minimum set of
packages. I have no use for ypbind so I'm trying to prevent from
being installed, but kickstart/anaconda always insist on its
installation (complaining that the package is missing). This is the
%packages section of my ks file so far:

Anaconda doesn't support raid10
So after troubleshooting this for about a week, I was finally able to
create a raid 10 device by installing the system, copying the md modules
onto a floppy, and loading the raid10 module during the install.
Now the problem is that I can't get it to show up in anaconda. It
detects the other arrays (raid0 and raid1) fine, but the raid10 array
won't show up. Looking through the logs

System on time
Hi,
To get my system on time, I usually issue these two commands:
# ntpdate de.pool.ntp.org
# hwclock -w
And when I want this to be done on startup, I put the two lines in
rc.local.
I wonder if this is an orthodox way to do things. Or is there something
more appropriate?

Building rpms
I have been asked to update OpenLDAP to the latest stable version. I am
using CentOS 4.2 and have OpenLDAP 2.2.13 installed. I can install from
source if I have to, but I would rather stay with rpm packages if possible.
I found an rpm from Fedora Core Development on RPMFIND. Will this one work
with Centos, or should I grab the source rpm and rebuild it?

2.6.9-42.ELsmp kernel and 3ware 9550 tools
I have the latest kernel with the drivers for my 3ware 9550SX built in.
Where
can I find the tools and monitoring apps for this card? Are there rpms
hiding
somewhere, or do I need to build it from source?

How do I configure additional serial ports?
I have installed two 4-port serial cards (http://www.startech.com/
Product/ItemDetail.aspx?productid=PCI4S550&c=US) on a CentOS 4.4
system. The hardware appears to be recognized correctly, as kudzu
added 2 entries to /etc/sysconfig/hwconf and lscpi shows both cards
(output of lspci -vv for both cards included at the end of this email):

Thanks for all the help and advice
I went with CentOS today and I couldn't be happier. I'm definitely
excited to be part of this community.
Now I just have to remember (after years of using the default SuSE
install of Java/Ant/Tomcat/Eclipse, etc.) where the best place to put my
Java apps is.

cat cron jobs into crontab
Hi,
What's the best/safest way to "cat" the following job into crontab?
*/3 * * * * /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_megaraid_passive.sh >
/dev/null 2>&1
I am used to doing this manually via crontab -e, but now I simply have
too many centos servers to build in a given week (get to toss another
120K at some more 2U chenbro/tyan/amd64's -w000ooo).

Re: Need some guidance re: two domains sharing the same workstations
Hello Matt,
I've had similar misfortunes too with interdomain trusts. I think
you're working along the right lines since you seem to want to do the
same thing as I.
However the NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL is an error I always get when trying
to connect to the IPC$ share of the PDC of the trusting domain. In my
case the trusting PDC is a Windows 2003 Server.
I know it's not an issue
