Mocking causes empty specification blocks
I''ve found myself mocking out a published api in my set-up method.
This has led to some contexts having a large set-up and empty
specifications. As the mocks get auto-verified, the specification
blocks have nothing to do but serve as documentation. Does this sound
bad?

Reading data file with both fixed and tab-delimited fields
Hello R wizards,
What is the best way to read a data file containing both fixed-width and
tab-delimited files? (More detail follows.)
_*Details:*_
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics provides local area unemployment
statistics at ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/time.series/la/, and the data are
documented in the file la.txt
<ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/time.series/la/la.txt>. Each data file has five

Finding all parents of acts_as_tree relationship
I''m using acts_as_tree to maintain a hierarchy of categories (each
top-level category can contain multiple categories and each
sub-category can contain multiple sub-categories, etc.).
I want to be able to find all parents of a particular category. I
realize that I can use @category.parent or even
@category.parent.parent to move up in the hierarchy, but I need this
to happen dynamically

Controller spec: testing that scope is set
In a Rails controller I set the scope on a model class in an around
filter. I have defined expectations on the model classes, and ideally, I
would add a further expectation for the scope. Is this already possible
in some way? How would I go about adding support a scope expectation?

Observing changes to a text field
I''ve noticed that using several TimedObservers (prototype.js) on a page
to watch for changes to text fields (haven''t tried forms) can have a
non-negligible effect on the CPU cycles used by the browser process.
Nothing dramatic, to be sure, but unnecessary.
Autocompleter.Base (controls.js) follows a smarter strategy to watch for
changes. Currently this functionality is tied

Timing out ajax requests?
Has someone come up with a generic way to handle ajax requests that
exceed a certain time?
In my concrete case, I have several select boxes for drilling down a
hierarchy. When the user clicks an option, the next deeper level is
retrieved. To avoid multiple concurrent requests, I disable the select
box. As the request may take too long or cause an error, I set a
timeout that re-enables the

Introspecting validates_presence_of
Hello people,
I''d like to detect whether an attribute of a model has
vaildates_presence_of applied to it so I can automatically apply a
mandatory (*) to the field...it doesn''t look easy...any ideas?
Cheers,

Unit testing
Recently, I''ve started to write unit tests for some of my scripts. In
general,it''s no worse in JavaScript than in Ruby or Java. I didn''t have
the courage to try Selenium, but had a look at JsUnit. Unfortunately,
in Konqueror it produces unfathomable errors and in Firefox it is slow
beyond imagination.
Anyway, writing tests for functions that are computational or

url_for: :overwrite_params went missing
Somewhere between 0.13.1 and the current SVN version
the :overwrite_params option to url_for (and related methods) went
missing. I can''t tell whether this was deliberate or by mistake, and I
have no idea how to get the same functionality in some other way
either.

Validation Reflection plugin
The validation reflection plugin adds three things
(1) Reflective access to validations
- ModelClass.reflect_on_all_validations
- ModelClass.reflect_on_validations_for(:property)
(2) It provides "declarative" methods for defining
validations based on database metadata
- validates_presence_of_mandatory_content_columns
- validates_lengths_of_string_attributes

PDF views?
I know there''s wiki page on generating PDF[*], but that''s not really
what I want. I don''t need to create arbitrary PDF. What I''d like to do
is create PDF templates and fill in the blanks. Roughly, I''m looking
for functionality akin to the mail merge feature of word processors,
including conditional and repeated elements, say, table rows.

Problem with dummy variables controlling for years
Hello everybody,
I'm running a panel regression with dummy variables controlling for years.
While this works fine for most of my models, in some cases I get the error
message "In sqrt(diag(object$vcov)) : NaNs wurden erzeugt" and missing
results for some or all of my year dummies:
Estimate Std. Error z-value Pr(>|z|)

Has anyone had any luck using the CalendarHelper plugin at

MenuEngine
Hi all,
MenuEngine is a small Rails engine that can generate templated
drop-down DHTML menus commonly used for web site navigation. Supports
creation of menus from a YAML file, from code and from pre-configured
HTML. Optionally integrates with UserEngine for authorization.

Unobtrusive scripting?
Currently, pages generated by Rails tend to be sprinkled with
JavaScript. This happens, because the various helper methods work only
locally and simply append to the output.
In order to hide the JavaScript away, rendering would probably have to
be changed. A way I can think of is that a page-specific script is
included in the head of the document and JavaScript code is not written

function.prototype.bind return value?
Quick question - how come the function.prototype.bind doesn''t allow for
return values? Am I missing some basic understanding of how this works?
I searched and couldn''t find an answer.
Specifically, I''m binding an object method to an existing form''s
onSubmit, but it still actually submits the form, refreshing the page -
which is not what I want.

Alternatives to Rico LiveGrid?
I''m no friend of paging, but I have to somehow deal with lists of
potentially large numbers of objects. The Rico LiveGrid[*] at first
blush seems attractive, but has some major drawbacks. It doesn''t work
with Safari/Konqueror, not yet anyway. It can only handle fixed-size
tables and requires that widths, including column widths, are
hand-crafted.
I''m looking for a
