Interesting ActiveRecord vs Hibernate article
For those haven''t seen it yet, Patrick Peak has an interesting article at the Server Side (www.theserverside.com) discussing the differences between the Hibernate (www.hibernate.org) peristence framework and ActiveRecord.  The article can be found here: http://www.theserverside.com/articles/article.tss?l=RailsHibernate .  Patrick Peak is the author of _Hibernate Quickly_ (Manning), which

Help: stemming and stem completion with package tm in R
Hi All I came across a problem below when doing stemming and stem completion with package tm in R. Word "mining" was stemmed to "mine" with stemDocument(), and then completed to "miners"with stemCompletion(). However, I prefer to keep "mining" intact. For stemCompletion(), the default type of completion is "prevalent", which takes the most

Data mining tools
Hello there, apologies for cross-posting my question is not an S/R question but there is so much knowledge concentrated in those lists that I thought someone could point me in the right direction. A few months ago I read an article in a referenced journal comparing some data mining programs, among which there was Insightful's I Miner, SAS' Entreprise Miner, SPSS' Clementine (I think)

Statistical / data mining methods in R and not in SAS?
Hi, and sorry for asking such an unspecific question. Does anybody know of statistical / data mining methods that are available in R that are not in SAS ? With SAS I mean the SAS System Version 9.4 and SAS Enterprise Miner. I don't expect a complete list, just two or three examples or hints where and what to look for. I found some older comparisons, and the R methods mentioned there

Data Mining Survey
Dear R-Helpers, SAS Institute just mailed out the notice below regarding a survey of people who do data mining. To help keep the survey from becoming biased toward commercial software, I thought it would be good to post it here as well. Cheers, Bob Fourth Annual Data Miner Survey Rexer Analytics has asked statistical and data mining software vendors to forward this survey as a courtesy. (SAS is

Help with Help
I have recently been reading several books on data mining which contain a few data sets.  The books offer some perspective on model choices, tuning decisions, result interpretation.  Are there any good resources that can walk me through the thought process of an experienced data miner with the datasets that are included for packages such as "rpart" & "kmeans". multinom(): likelihood of model?
Hi all, I'm working on a multinomial (or "polytomous") logistic regression using R and have made great progress using multinom() from the nnet library. My response variable has three categories, and there are two different possible predictors. I'd like to use the likelihoods of certain models (ie, saturated, fitteds, and null) to calculate Nagelkerke R-squared values for

Creating a GUI based workflow
Hello R-users, I am interested to know if there is a tool that allows us to build SAS Enterprise Miner like workflows using the R scripts. For example, let's say I have the R scripts/functions for the following tasks: 1. Data Cleaning 2. Model Building 3. Model Validation 4. Visualization I would like to drag these functions into a workflow and run them together (output of one function

Available in S-plus, also in R1.8.1?
Hello all, I'm looking for the R-equivalent of the S-option "Connect type: half horiz first". Link: http://miner.stern.nyu.edu/Splus/help/guihelp/__hhelp/connect_type.htm I'm plotting with type="s" or type="S"; this is giving me a stairstep starting, or ending with the value on the x-axis (as documented). But, I want the x-value in the middle of the step,

special language character in a pie chart
Dear List Members, I am working on a below piece of code: Initially have created pie charts with Enlish labels to present the data for Czech Republic, now however I need to print the label with original Czech fonts. When I copy paste from Word, certain fonts get 'simplified' distorting original spelling. How can solve this problem? Is there a package I can download which will support

SAS enterprise guide in R?
Hello, Our company has been looking at "SAS enterprise guide 4" (Insightful Miner is a similar product from Insightful, I believe) which seems to provide a nice graphical way of displaying/managing a process or project. It is also accessible to non-programmers. Does any of the R GUIs provide similar functionality please? Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance Best

Statistical analysis of huge datasets.
Dear R-users, I am faced with the problem of analyzing a huge dataset (+ 2 million records, +150 variables) which does not fit into memory. I would like to know if there are pre-packaged tools (in the spirit of Insigthful I-Miner, for instance) aimed at subsampling or splitting the dataset into data-frameable subdatasets, applying functions record-wise, etc. Thank you very much for your

Help with Conditional Logit
Hello, I'm brand new to using R. (I've been using Rapid Miner, but would like to move over to R since it gives me much more functionality.) I'm trying to learn how to do a conditional logit model. My data has one dependent variable, 2 independent variables and a "group" variable. example: class v1 v2 group "sick" .3 .7 1 "well"

decision tree finetune
My decision tree grows only with one split and based on what I see in E-Miner it should split on more variables. How can I adjust splitting criteria in R? Also is there way to indicate that some variables are binary, like variable Info_G is binary so in the results would be nice to see "2) Info_G=0" instead of "2) Info_G<0.5". Thank you in advance! And thanks for Eric who

UNSOLITED E_MAILS: Integrate R data-analysis projects with Microsoft Office for free
Dear R Admins, I received an unsolicited e-mail from BlueInference as an R user. Does it mean that R that our e-mails (and names) is sharing it's user database with third parties without our consent? Or perhaps the BlueInference guys are using an e-mail address miner to get our contact details? [SNIP] Dear Gorden Jemwa, As a fellow R user, I am sure you agree with me that R is a
