CentOS Install From Scratch on XFS File System
I'm thinking about switching to CentOS 4.4 x86_64 from another RH based
version. However, I need to install it from scratch and I need EVERYTHING
(including /boot & /) on XFS file systems. Does the default installer allow
this? If not, how difficult would it be to make the necessary changes. I've
done a lot of Google searching and searching of the CentOS site, but haven't

Running From Live DVD & Keeping Settings Between Boots
Someone posted how to use a memory card (USB or another kind) to save
settings between boots of a Live CD/DVD. I believe it was posted not too long
ago and I thought I had kept the email, but now that I'm looking for the
information, I can not find it. I've done some searching and I either get way
too many hits or way too few, none of which are what I'm looking for. Does

booting CentOS in rescrue mode from USB (+over network)
Hello,
is there a way to boot CentOS 4.5 from USB flash key in rescue mode ?
The prefered solution would be to have booting part of CentOS started by
SysLinux and download the content of CD1 from a network server (HTTP),
like Anaconda is able to use command "method".
Best regards,
Martin

First time Wine--config problems
Okay, I'm not a programmer, but I'm not new to Unix either--used it years
and years ago in college before Win 3.1 came out. So I'm pretty rusty, but
it IS coming back....
Here's my problem.
I'm using Wine-20010510 on SuSE Linux 7.1. Wine seemed to install fine, but
every time I try to run it, it says the c:\windows and c:\windows\system
directories are invalid. I've

Q's about switching from sendmail to postfix
Running CentOS 4.2 with all updates. I've been using sendmail for my
MTA since forever. I've grown used to it and I can make it do what I
want it to. However (there's always a catch, isn't there)...
Lately it seems that some mail is being lost. I've noticed some
instances when a message was sent to myself and others which I will only
see if someone replies back to

Can I use pxelinux to boot a cdrom image or isolinux from pxe?
Greetings,
I've been a user and fan of SYSLINUX for a couple of years now. I use PXELINUX
for a PXE server. I've only been able to boot linux kernel/initrd images and
dos bootdisks, however now I'm wanting to create a boot image for the 'Rescue
Is Possible' (RIP) linux recovery disk -

Invalid or corrupt kernel image
Hi,
I am trying to setup my own PXE boot server. I tried several PXE bootable Linux-Distributions.
For example if I use the ubuntu netboot image from [1] it works quit well but there are a few other images they do not work in my case e.g.: RIPLinuX [2]. A friend tested this image on his PXE boot server with success. I also checked the download with md5sum.
In my case I can see the boot menu [3].

backup to disk
Hi,
I'm looking for common practices for backing up user data to disk. My
user data is all in /home. I'm also interested in what folks are doing
for things backing up os and configs.
Any pointers on setting up rsync, cpio, etc would be appreciated.
Pointers to good how-to's especially welcome.
Currently we're using Arkeia Network Backup (commercial product with

These are some boot/rescue systems with ext3 support.
The RIP boot/rescue system.

Failure to boot isohybrid image from USB stick
Hi,
i did not succeed to get my test computer (Asus A7V8X-X
of 2004) to boot from an isohybrid image.
I tried
http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/RIPLinux-7.0-non-X.iso
which is obviously isohybrid enabled.
The system has a "Promise Ultra 133 TX2" IDE controller
which supercedes the mainboard BIOS.
To make the system react on the USB stick i set boot

Sso the Linux way?
So I was googling around about this over the last week and here is what I
found:
nis/yp is for some reason bad.
Kerbos is holy, but no how-to's that don't involve windows and active
directory.
What is the recommended sso approach for centos? Where are there examples /
docs to follow?

Centos 5.2, Xen and "/lib[64]/tls"
Hi,
I'm setting up a few machines for virtualization using Xen on Centos 5.2
x86_64. A lot of how-to's out there tell me to do something like "mv
/lib/tls /lib/tls.disabled" or similar actions or else Xen might not work
correctly. Is this something that is still relevant or does it only apply
to older versions of Xen/Centos? If this is still necessary what is the

SuSE7.0 with Nvidia-GLX does not run together with MESA?
I saw on a "easy" Howto (there are about 10 different how-to's), that the
MESA-package from SuSE ist conflicting with the GL-Drivers from Nvidia
(which you need to run Nvidia-Cards 3D-accelerated). Is it true, that I
have to uninstall MESA?

sernet samba4 on Ubuntu
I am attempting to install EnterpriseSamba (Sernet) on a Ubuntu

I finding it a challenge to determine the proper installation and
configuration procedures with sernet-samba. There are no (at least I
cannot find them) how-to's or instructions or readme on the sernet
download website.
Any ideas where to find such or guidance?
