2 more JSON / XML feature parity patches before Rails 2.0
I''d really like to see just 2 more functional changes to the JSON
serialization/encoding before we get to Rails 2.0.
First, and I think this is really crucial because without it all the
efforts to output JSON from ActiveRecord objects would have been half
in vain, is to allow us to do this in controllers:
@authors = Author.find(:all)
render :json => @authors.to_json(:only =>

Rails shouldn't output invalid JSON by default
Please check out this ticket (which would explain almost everything):
http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/8762
So basically, Rails to_json methods produces invalid JSON out of the
box as it doesn''t quote all hash keys. This is valid JSON:
{
"id": 6589,
"code": "SIN",
"name": "Singapore"
}
This is not (Rails'' JSON encoders

[PATCH] x 2 - Fix for "null pointer exception" when ask_status is called before worker is run, and docfixes
Sorry for attaching patches in emails to the mailing list, but I''m still
unable to login to Devjavu for Backgroundrb (I''m able to login just fine for
Merb''s Devjavu and submitted a ticket successfully).
Anyway, I encountered a bug when trying to #ask_status of a worker before
it''s run (or rather, before its result_hash has been set to something). Not
sure why

render_to_string in an after filter
I''m using render_to_string in an after_filter, which renders a partial
that is sent to a web service. Here''s the code:
class MyController < ApplicationController
after_filter :post_to_webservice
def show
# show logic
end
def post_to_webservice
stuff = render_to_string :partial => ''stuff''
webservice_post(stuff)
end
I get a DoubleRenderError in the

[ActiveSupport] Patches needing review: re-organization of #to_query methods, preservation of XML/JSON content-type
Just a quick pointer to some ActiveSupport patches hoping for reviews:
Puts Array#to_query and Object#to_query in the right places in
ActiveSupport - http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/10395
Preserve user-specified content type for XML and JSON rendering
(currently it''s overridden and set to Mime::XML/Mimi::JSON -

Trac not for general use?
Hi devs,
I was trying to open a new ticket with a minor doc patch at the
BackgroundDrb Trac (http://backgroundrb.devjavu.com/) and it seems
like only admins have permission to do so. Is this intended?
I read in the readme that patches should be mailed to this list, but I
much prefer to use Trac since there''s already one set up. Any reason
Trac is not open to registered Devjavu users?

How to hack a mongrel cluster to restart in an alternating manner?
Hello,
I''ve been trying (unsuccessfully) to hack my mongrel_cluster to re-ststart
in an alternating manner.
Specifically, this soluiton:
http://blog.carlmercier.com/2007/09/07/a-better-approach-to-restarting-a-mongrel-cluster/#content
Which means I an call to mongrel_rails cluster::restart to do this:
mongrel_rails start 8001
mongrel_rails stop 8001
mongrel_rails start 8002

Merb in production with God/Monit
Hey All,
I just wanted to get other peoples take on problems when running merb
in production? Just as Rails used to do, the mongrels tend to get
heavy/unresponsive over time so need a good kicking by a watcher
daemon like god or monit. However, I have had serious problems getting
God to restart the process, as the "merb -k <port>" command doesnt
appear to work reliably

Submitted a patch, got pluses, what now?
Hello Rails people,
I submitted a patch recently to get rid of an annoying exception raised when
an AR
object is created - http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/10556 , had some
people review it,
got some pluses... What am I supposed to do now?
Can anybody advise or just review the patch and take care of the issue?
Thanks!

Send your submissions to me by email or on #merb. I''ll blog it, and
pick a winner. The winner does not mean it makes it into Merb, just
means I personally like it best.
But it might make it into Merb.

How do you run an app on "edge merb"?
I didn''t quite see a direct answer to Matt''s question regarding
running merb from SVN:
http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/merb-devel/2007-July/000132.html
In a merb application, is there something comparable to having rails
in the vendor/ folder of a rails app?
Thanks,

Merb exception stack
In this thread: http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/134298
the poster had a patch to create a stack trace that had "textmate" links
it it. He opened a bug report: http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/10401
I can''t find that since dev.rubyonrails.org appears dead. I don''t know
if / how the old tickets got moved over to lighthouse. I searched in
the new repository but could

merb 0.4.0 session issue
Not sure if anyone else has had this problem.
I was running on merb edge fine a few days ago. Last night I went to
merb 0.4.0 via gem install and now any call to session[:foo] causes an
error >> undefined method ''[]'' for nil:NilClass
I have uninstalled and reinstalled merb with no luck.

Loading config YAML into merb process for the life of the process
Hey Chaps,
Forgive me for not fully understanding the inner workings of merb, but
I would like to read in a YAML configuration file once when the
application is booted rather than reading it every time it is used (as
presumably the overhead in doing that is significant?) - I had
presumed this is how both Merb and rails do it for there database.yml
config files (hence its a requirement

merb/sequel mutex on or off? proxy_balancer or no?
Just a quick question to those of you using merb and sequel or
datamapper. How do you setup your merb app?
For example:
merb -X off -c 5, then run mod_proxy_balancer or nginx to load balance
between the 5 (or whatever #) of merb nodes?
merb -X off -d, then simply use something like proxypass
merb -c 5, keep the mutex lock and cluster it
haproxy, swiftiply, evented mongrel......

running merb locally
Stupid question, but is there a way to run merb locally, without installing
it as a gem? I don''t mean freezing it into a merb app, but checking out merb
and being able to run it without installing the gem first.
The reason I ask is that I''m working on some debugging stuff and it''d be
helpful to be able to modify the source code, run it, modify, run, and so
on. (And yes,

Deploying with Merb
After a half day''s work I''ve created a Merb app to handle file uploads
for a Rails app.
In my dev environment, I changed the views in the Rails app to point
to Merb on port 4000.
But now I''m stuck trying to figure out how to deploy my new Merb app
on a production server.
Looks like originally this was handled with a rewrite rule

Whats the merb equivilant of this?
Hey All
Quick question, what''s the merb equivalent of this:
ActionView::Base.new([template_root], assigns, self)
in merb? Ive found
Merb::Template::Erubis.transform(:file => ''/path/to/file'')
But I''ve no idea if thats the correct thing to be calling? It doesn''t
''feel'' right, so im not sure it is?
Thanks

Merb Projects and Autotest
Hi!
I''m rather new to Merb, but I thought I''d give it a shot. I found that
autotest wasn''t running my specs when my models were changing. Maybe this
is because of how I have set up Merb, but in the even that it''s not just me,
I''ve adapted Autotest''s mappings for Rails and have attached my efforts to
this email. Unfortunately, you need to
