Ext3 vs. Reiser?
Hi!
I was just wondering how Ext3 and Reiserfs compare. When I reinstalled my
server (because of a stupid hacker) I took the opportunity to change to
ReiserFS. And I have to say it's really much faster than Ext3.
I don't have benchmarks, but for example, stuff like "make dep" on the linux
kernel is much faster (even though I had enabled write cache when I was
using ext3).
So

XFS vs. ext3
(Sorry for cross-posting; I'm not on either ext3-users or
linux-xfs, but I thought both lists might find this interesting.
CC me with any replies or questions. Thanks.)
(The last four paragraphs contain the interesting bits.
Basically, XFS hath kick-ed the *ss of ext3 under conditions
that are, for our company, critical.)
Some listees might be interested in some testing I did the other

chmod for directories only
I want to change the permissions on directories, recursively to:
drwxr-xr-x
but keep the files within the directory tree as:
-rw-r--r--
But I can't find an option for chmod to only affect directories. I
suppose it won't hurt (in this case) to set the x for the files, but I
want some consistancy.

HELP : Samba is very slow
I have an Access application that work with some shared database file. The file is ~ 3 Mb.
Since I have a Linux system with Samba, this application work very slow.
I have multiple user with win95 on this file. Is there an option for allowing multiple access without cache ?

Recover rpm DB corrupted by disk failure?
Over the weekend my workstation (still on CentOS 3) started showing
SMART errors, so we shut it down and moved everything onto a new
drive. On reboot, the RPM database reports as corrupted and "rpm
--rebuilddb" segmentation faults.
Is there any reasonable way to recover from this, short of a complete
reinstall? The machine is otherwise up though it''s quite likely some
files

iPod Touch/iPhone VPNs with CentOS.
I am looking at options for VPN connections from iPhones and iPod
Touches to CentOS systems. We use OpenVPN for connections with
Windows, Mac OS X, and other Linux systems, but there don't
appear to be any OpenVPN clients for iPhones (presumably because
there are no tun/tap interfaces available yet).
My experiences getting IPsec running on CentOS systems with OpenVPN
have not been pretty.

Long tar -x: Box Shuts Down
My Centos 5.2 box shuts itself down during a
long tar -x. There is plenty of disk available.
This is new; it worked in the past.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike.

To ext3 or not to ext3?
I'm in the process of building a home file server and am of course going
to use Linux 2.4 (2.4.6 for now...). I'm waffling between resierfs and
ext3. I've read the ext3 page and some of the mailing list archives but
have a few questions remaining. (I apologize in advance if they are
redundant.)
Are there any known issues with:
- LVM
- LVM snapshots (more on that in a sec)

Ignore files gone missing.
Is there a way to have rsync not treat files that have gone
missing (e.g. Maildir messages that have been removed) as errors
while indicating I/O errors and such?

centos 5.8 libvirt disk options
I am attempting to use libvirtd/kvm on CentOS 5.latest to migrate a SCO
OpenServer 5.0.6a VM from the old VMware server.
I have converted the multiple vmdk disk files to a single file, then used
qemu-img convert to create files for libvirtd, both qcow2 and raw formats.
After many attempts to get this working I'm up against what appears to be a
brick wall.
+ The VMware VMs are using

Is it safe to delete /bin/[ && /usr/bin/false?
Greetings,
Well, I en devoured to install a copy of 7 as an effort to upgrade
one of our servers. After installing a few ports, I began to notice:
[: -le: argument expected messages being emitted during the configure/make
process. I've already invested a fair amount of time on this upgrade,
and /really/ don't want to wipe the disk(s) and start all over. This
issue is not new to me - see

2GB of Waste? How can it be?
Dr. Tweedie, et al.:
I recently formatted a partition using EXT3, and after a "df -h"
I get 14GB of space. When I reformatted the partition with ReiserFS, and
did a "df -h" I got 16GB of space!
Now the partition was setup to be 16GB via fdisk, so 16GB is
correct. However, why does EXT3 loose 2GB of space? The journals cannot
be that big!?!
Very Respectfully,
Stuart

ReiserFS and CentOS
RedHat has stripped out support for ReiserFS in their enterprise Linux
products. It appears the unsupported CentOS kernel supports ReiserFS.
Doesn't anaconda and the kickstart boot kernel also need to be
enhanced to support ReiserFS as well?
thanks for any help.

What's the best way to convert a whole set of file systems?
I am currently running a Windows XP system at home with around 100+ Mb
in use over ~400Mb of NTFS file systems. I am installing CentOS 4.4 on
it when I change out the mobo/cpu/mem/video combo I just bought. I want
to convert all the file systems to (probably) Reiserfs or maybe ext3,
but I need to do them one at a time because I only have enough transfer
space to accommodate the largest one, or
