ICMP
After the recent attacks on the major servers on the web my ISP has
decided to stop all ICMP messages from his ISP.
I have red the RFCs and it seems that he cant do that... As a result
pings and traceroutes will not work.
I need a friendly person out there to tell me a way to break the news to
him that he has to allow ICMP packets
through his network... any suggestions would be helpfull

Re: IPMASQ and lock-up of all terminals ---- Sum mary and update
Well, last night, my box was hit again.. same symptoms:
All attempts to connect remotely receive a connection, but a login prompt
never comes up.
When I went to the console and turned on the monitor, I had the login
prompt, but written on to the screen was the message
IPMASQ: Reverse ICMP: Checksum error from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
So, on this occasion, I thought I would post a summary of the

Compiling Samba For OPENLinux 3.1.1
Hello. I am looking to get the parameters that the Caldera RPM was made with. I have noticed that it is not being updated and would like to get the current ver. on my system, but need to have the same links to various files. Can anyone help me to find the parameters?
I would be interested in making the RPMs but need to know how to make them first, maybe some direction to info on making RPMs.

Shadow and OpenLinux
Hi all:
I'm running Caldera OpenLinux with kernel 2.0.29, shadow password and
quotas. The shadow kit is 980403 and is working fine.
Well, when I try to compile I got this output :

Using CFLAGS = -O -DSMBLOGFILE="/usr/local/samba/var/log.smb"
-DNMBLOGFILE="/usr
/local/samba/var/log.nmb"

OpenLinux 2.2: LISA install leaves root access without password
Hello,
I believe I''ve found a bug in the installation process of OpenLinux 2.2
when using the LISA boot disk. During the installation a temporary passwd
file is put on the new file system containing the user "help" set uid=0
gid=0 and no password. Once you are prompted to set the root password and
default user password a new passwd and shadow file is created yet the help

pid and lock dir during compile
I am compiling 2.2.8 on a Caldera Openlinux box that was running 2.0.5 or
some such. It already has a working config and uses samba.d dirs for it's
files:
/etc/samba.d
/var/lock/samba.d
/var/log/samba.d
etc
During compile I use following switches
--with-piddir=/var/lock/samba.d
--with-lockdir=/var/lock/samba.d
However the pid files are ending up in /var/run/samba instead of

You got some 'splaininn to do Lucy ;-)
We just had a security application vendor come in. We asked about Linux
support and he said that putting a security application on top of an
insecure OS was useless. When I asked what he meant by insecure he replied
that Linux does not have a true Auditing capability - as opposed to HP-UX &
Solaris which they do support. Can anyone explain to me what he was talking
about?
Thanks,
Marty

compare / contrast of linux fw and others
Hi,
I was wondering how a linux box configured as a firewall stacked up
against some of the commercial products like checkpoint-1 and gauntlet.
Can someone direct me to a good book or online doc that compares linux
to some other firewall methods?
Mind you, I''m not talking about a firewall in the classical sense, ie
ip forwarding turned off and used as a proxy, but the typical Linux box

/proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc/register: no such file or directory
I get this during booting? Anyone have any ideas?
I'm running redhat 7.1 w/ kernel 2.4.9-6 and the wine version from the
powertools cd.
Latest version of wine does it also.
I get this error when installing from redhat powertools too:
"execution of %post scriplet from wine 20010131-3 failed, exit status1"
but it installs and seems to work... just my windows service doesn't
