Stdlib and Defined Types
All,
Does anyone know of a way to add a file-centric backtrace to the validate
functions in the Stdlib?
If you use a validator in a defined type, you end up not having any idea
what actually threw the error.
Though much has moved to parameterized classes, there are still times when
defines are useful and it would be nice to know what calling
class/define/stack was blowing up.
Thanks,
Trevor

Purge-like ability for the augeas type?
I''ve been searching around but haven''t found a way to do something
like a purge with augeas.
If you have a file such as
[iniheader]
entry1 (managed by puppet)
entry2 (not managed by puppet)
And you want to add ''entry3'' as well as removing anything not managed
by puppet in that subsection then you currently do not have this
capability.
Is this correct?

Announcing Razor
Puppet Labs is really thrilled to announce, in conjunction with EMC, our
new open source bare metal provisioning tool: Razor.
Razor is next generation provisioning software that handles bare metal
hardware and virtual server provisioning with inventory discovery and
tagging, rule-based policy management, and extensible broker plugin
integration. It integrates closely with Puppet and Facter.

Developing custom type/providers for multiple OS
Hello all,
I am developing a few custom providers for some features that I need into
my system (such as dealing with different zipped files or generating some
JSON data based on OS files) and I have hit into a question about "how to
do this for multiple OS?"
Lets focus into the zipped file provider that should provide a common
method to pack or unpack zipped files (tar, tar.gz,

Append string to list items.
I have an array:
$nodes = [''gfs01'' ,''gfs02'', ''gfs03'', ''gfs04]
and a string variable:
$brick_store = "/var/bricks"
How can I append "/var/bricks" to each item in the array? Lack of a
looping construct makes this challenging in puppet.
Such that:
brick_array = [''gfs01:/var/bricks'',

Variable doesn't expand properly
HI,
I''m getting some strange errors when I try to use a variable in a require =>

Puppet 100% CPU usage
Hi,
I''ve been experimenting with Puppet for a few days now, and I really
like it.
But! I''m having real CPU usage problems.
Puppet is still happily eating away 100% CPU for almost an hour at a
time, with no apparent things happening.
(puppetd -tv --trace --debug, but nothing appearing in the console
during this.)
I believe the following resource is to blame:

Atomicity of updates on the Puppet master
Hello,
I''m currently setting up some scripts that will pull in new data for Puppet
master (modules, manifests, hiera data, etc.) from a Git repository. It
works great!
However, I''m concerned about atomicity of the whole thing. Does the Puppet
master cache the modules/manifests when it starts? If so, do I need to
restart the Puppet master on each update? Or can I send it a

Same certificate on multiple identical machines ?
Hi list,
In our platform we have a lot of machines in which the system is a
single disk image loaded on RAM from PXE.
The problem is quite simple : if I install puppetd on the image, I
will end up using the same certificate for 100 different servers with
different names (the hostname is setup at boot time from dhcp) and I
guess the puppetmaster won''t allow that.
In other words : what

Disable certain facter facts?
We found out, the hard way, that version 1.7 of Facter adds facts for
mounted linux file systems.
This is nice for normal servers. For a server hosting Oracle not so good.
We went from about 100 facts per server to well over 3,000 (our Oracle
boxes have quite a few volumes mounted).
Of course, this choked our ENC (Foreman) having this many facts pumped into
it and required us to downgrade

Custom type obligatory field?
Hi.
I''ve been trying to develop a module for managing Cobbler from puppet.
So, I need a custom type - cobblerdistro, which will fetch ISO from
http, unpack it at desired destination and register distro with Cobbler.
I have one issue with ensure => absent situation.
First of all, here is my type:
<code>

Puppet::Type.newtype(:cobblerdistro) do

Automating infrastructure tests on Puppet nodes after a puppetrun
Hi List,
I would like to discuss with whoever is interested one topic that I
suppose has general interest.
I want to implement some kind of automatic testing on the status of a
node after a Puppet Run.
These tests involve trivial and less trivial things things like:
- A local service is running
- A local port is open
- A remote server on a remote port is reachable by the node
- An URL replies

Thoughts on job listings?
How do folks feel about getting Puppet job listings on this list?
I''ve rejected a few that we quite spammy, but when the subject matter
really is a system admin with puppet experience, the decision becomes
a bit different.
I''m looking for general feelings. A simple +1 or -1 would be great.

My name is Angelica Nunes and I work at TV Globo Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.
I need some help about the SAMBA software.
Our system is based on Silicon Graphics' machines, models: Indy, Impact,
Onyx and Indigo using Operational System Irix 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4. We must
upgrade all these systems to Irix 6.5 version. We would like to know which
samba version is compatible with Irix 6.5?

polygon kills X-server
Hi all,
when I make a polygon with 100,000 vertices my X-server is being
killed. This occurs in R-2.9.0 and a freshly installed R-2.10.0
I'm running Ubuntu with a locally compiled R:
