puppet --genmanifest
Is puppet --genmanifest something one should still be using? I''m having
some problems running it on RHEL4 and I''m sure I have read something about
puppet taking care of its own directories automatically. Here are a

Confusion regarding standard file permissions.
Hello,
I am attempting to extend the standard manifest generated by puppetd --genmanifest. Interestingly, it seems like my file configurations are not being honored in terms of permissions and ownership. Instead, the default permissions and owners are being set. Is there some way to override the defaults from within a manifest?
Also, I attempted to use the special parameters in the

Host information gathering
I''d like to keep the desired and current states of a machine regarding it''s
configuration.
Sometimes a chain of administrative commands is needed to get a special thing
(re)configured on a machine, e.g. reconfig of a suncluster. This cannot be
done with puppet in an easy way. In the majority of cases, these commands
change appropriate files, which reflect the current

Issue with ralsh and Puppet installed as gem
Hi,
I finally found why ralsh was failing on my systems; Puppet was
installed as a gem and ralsh couldn''t find it. I added the preamble from
puppetd and it seems to work fine now:

Using puppet to backup
Apologize ahead of time if this has been asked before. Without using
external commands, can puppet back-up files and directories to the
puppetmaster server? If I delete or change a file, I can back the file,
but all I want to do is to take a snap-shot of some configurations.
If I can''t do it natively, has anyone created a script that does so
using external commands (such as tar, gzip,

Kernel oops when running bonnie++ on btrfs
I wanted to see how btrfs compares to other filesystems so I have been
running bonnie++ on it. While the results are good(much faster then
ext2) every once in awhile I get a kernel oops. I am testing on xubuntu
8.10 with the 2.6.27-7-686 kernel using the latest git sources. Most of the
time the oops happens within 20min of running bonnie++ but sometimes it
takes a few hours. This happens with and

Puppet RPM's
Does anyone know where I can get the latest puppet, 2.7.1 as RPM''s?
The spec file that comes with the puppet 2.7.1 source is broken again, and
only version 0.25.5 seems to be available via EPEL, which means that the
website''s assertion that you can get puppet as an RPM from there is somewhat
untrue.

Puppet Agent VS User
Hello,
Running into a problem when wanting to daemon-ize the agent. It doesnt
seems to do anything:
- cannot find any daemon process with (ps aux | grep puppet)
- the config is not updated after editing some params on the master
- /var/log/puppet stay empty...
while, when logged as root, it is working without issue with $puppet agent
--test.

Can't create user on OS X
Hi,
I''m just starting to get a puppet config system running on OS X 10.6
and have hit a snag.
I am attempting to create a user and get an error on the client :-

The manifest I am using is the output of ''ralsh user ladmin'' on

Turn off client autoupdate
Hello!
By default puppet node connects to server periodically and looks if
there is something execute. I''m wondering is it possible to make
puppet clients not connect to server themselves? So that it would be
possible to update a node only with puppetrun nodename.

Fw: Re: What packages ubuntu-xen-server & ubuntu-xen-desktop are up to on intrepid
I have installed Ubuntu Intrepid Server on bare metal and successfully ran:-
# apt-get install ubuntu-xen-server.
It installed several packages on system . Now i can see files
/boot/xen-3.3.gz, /etc/init.d/xend, /etc/init.d/xendomains, but no
xenified kernel gets in. Attempt to use vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-server, obviously , fails with system panic.
I do remember recompiling procedure for Xen

Best Practice: how to organize puppetmaster directories?
Hi,
While puppet creates its own directories for internal stuff (puppetca,
state, etc.), there''s a fair bit of latitude given to where things like
manifests and uploaded files live. I didn''t get much guidance from the
docs when I first set things up so I mostly poked at things until the
worked. Take a look at the following and let me know if this looks
reasonable; if so, it

Puppet dsl
Is the puppet dsl a complete Turing capable language?
As I understand it, the chain is dsl -> compiled thing -> actions.
What language is the compiled thing in? Ruby?

Best practices using puppet on partially installed systems.
So, my configuration attempts are aimed at Linodes .
Ubuntu 10.10 to be exact.
Linodes are libcloud enabled as well as basically provisioned. What I
seek to do is add to that, not build from nothing, since libcloud et.
al. give me a base to work with.
What is the canonical way to manage this situation?
For example:
$ puppet resource package --verbose openssh-client

Repository issue with R 2.8.0 in Ubuntu 8.10
Dear List,
I'm not an expert on Linux but I have been using Ubuntu and R sice two
years ago.
I've just installed Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (8.10, Kernel:
2.6.27-7-generic) from the scratch and then installed R, following the
instruction given on:
http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/README, and everything
worked fine.
However, after the installation I realized that the installed
