Restructure some data
Suppose I have a data frame like "dat" below. For some context, this is the format that represents student's taking a computer adaptive test. first.item is the first item that student was administered and then score.1 is the student's response to that item and so forth.
item.pool <- paste("item", 1:10, sep = "")
set.seed(54321)
dat <- data.frame(id =

Left/right hand side characters
Hello all
Is there a way reducing the number of characters in a list so that just
the left n numbers of characters is given?
For example, If I have a list, listnames, which consists of 4 strings of
6 characters;
>listnames
[1] "item12" "item34" "item56" "item78"
Is there a way to reduce this so only the 5 characters on the lefthand
side are

Why did TukeyHSD not work when I used it for post-hoc for 2way within-subjects anova?
Dear R people,
I have a couple of questions about post-doc analyses for 2 by 2 within
subjects ANOVA. I conducted a psycholinguistic study that combined a 2 by 2
design and a latin square design. Specifically, I had 32 items each of which
generated 4 conditions. Participants saw each of the 32 items only once: 8
in Condition A, 8 in B, 8 in C, and 8 in D. The table below serves as an
example.

duplicate model object with associations ?
class Patient < AR::Base
has_many :aaas
has_many :bbbs ,:through=>:aaas
end
class Aaa < AR::Base
has_many :bbbs
end
-------
i want like this
@patient=Patient.find(id)
@new_patient=@patient.duplicate
now the
@new_patient should have their own copy of patient,aaas,bbbs (new
records in corresponding tables)
there is one options is that
we can create seperate object for each

Staff Manager tutorial from "Prototype and script.aculo.us" by Christophe Porteneuve
Hi there,
Taking my first steps in Prototype and reading this very helpful book
by Christophe Porteneuve. There''s an interesting tutorial (Chpt. 7) on
making a tree to organize staff members. The problem is that I can''t
make it working in IE. In Firefox it works just great.
Did anybody fiddle with it? Maybe somebody has already figured it out.
IE says

data manipulation in R
Dear List:
I have a data manipulation problem that I was unable
to solve in R. I did it in SQL, and it may be that
the solution in R is to do it in SQL, but I wondered
if people could imagine a vector-based solution.
Imagine a list A[i] of observers who observe some set
of events B[j]. Each observer i may observe one or
more events, and each event j may have been observed
by one or more

package "arules" - 'transpose' of the transactions
Suppose this is my list of transactions:
set.seed(200)
tran=random.transactions(100,3)
inspect(tran)
items transactionID

2 {item8,
item20} trans2

I want to get the 'transpose' of the data, i.e.

Save using Update
Hi,
I want to update an existing row in table "items" where items.id == 10
I tried this:
item = Item.new
item.f1 = ...

I got an error

How do I make item.save to use UPDATE instead of INSERT?

How can I access the value of params[:tags] in my validate function?
I would like to have tags mandatory in my app.

The field for tags is called "tags"

as.numeric() generates NAs inside an apply call, but fine outside of it
Hello-
I have rather a messy SPSS file which I have imported to R, I've dput'd
some of the columns at the end of this message. I wish to get rid of all
the labels and have numeric values using as.numeric. The funny thing is
it works like this:
as.numeric(mydata[,2]) # generates correct numbers
however, if I pass the whole dataframe at once like this:
apply(mydata, 1:2, function(x)

Timing benefits of mapply() vs. for loop was: Wrap a loop inside a function
List:
Thank you for the replies to my post yesterday. Gabor and Phil also gave
useful replies on how to improve the function by relying on mapply
rather than the explicit for loop. In general, I try and use the family
of apply functions rather than the looping constructs such as for, while
etc as a matter of practice.
However, it seems the mapply function in this case is slower (in terms
of CPU

newbie to R but not to stats programming
Dear R-list
I am a newbie to R, but I have been doing statistical
programming for 15 years, in SAS, Stata, Perl, and
various idioms of SQL. A number of basic working
issues have so far eluded me in R, so I thought I
would post several long and newbie messages in the
hope that several people will respond with different
ways to resolve these issues.
I have read Maindonald's _ Intro_, and

contingency tables in R
Dear List:
Most of the analysis I do involves contingency tables.
I am migrating to R from Stata and I have a number of
questions about using contingency tables in R. I
suspect that most of the things I want to do are very
short R scripts that people on this list probably
have. I wonder if you would be willing to share them.
First, the presentation of tables by table() is not

model frame and formula mismatch with latent class analysis poLCA
Dear R-users,
I keep getting an ERROR saying " Error in model.matrix.default(formula,
mframe) : model frame and formula mismatch in model.matrix() " when i fit
poLCA with more than 63 variables. Below are the details.
I am trying to do a Latent Class Analysis using poLCA. My data set contains
binary scores of, for instance, 200 students on 100 items. These numbers
could even be more

Constructin a call of function including permutation of column names - how to escape parentheses?
Dear R-users,
I would like to construct a list of arguments for a function in a format
function (list(item1=c("A","B"), item2=c("B","C")), item3=...):
The individual vectors in the list are permutations of colnames of a
dataframe.
The trouble is that I am not able to handle escaping of parentheses
correctly.
I was trying the following:

When someone helps you, at least let them know if the problem is resolved or not
I'll keep this brief because I don't want to come across like any more of an
a$$ than I absolutely have to, especially since I know I've blown my stack
before.....
Gentlemen (and Ladies, if you're out there),
If someone gives you advice on this list, and ESPECIALLY if they give you
advice offlist, have the courtesy to (AT THE LEAST) to let them know when/if
you get your question
