suggestions for installing CentOS 5 via USB?
I'm having problems installing CentOS via a USB drive. First, I tried using Unetbootin, but with no avail. The 8MB netinstall doesn't work, and the big DVD image doesn't work either. http://lubi.sourceforge.net/unetbootin.html Then I tried this http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-centos-5-live-install-via-windows/ with a CentOS DVD file, and that did not work (just hangs). I tried

semi-OT: flashing the BIOS on an HP dl580 GT, afterward
When last we saw our hero, er, sysadmin, he'd found that the "noarch" BIOS update was, in fact, a self-extracting .exe file, and he'd extracted it. Finally getting the ok to take the system down, the following hilarity (for small values of hilarity) ensued. First, booting off unetbootin to freedos was fine... except it was try to guess which version - freedos + emm386 + himem,

Building an install disk on a USB key manually or using unetbootin
Has anyone successfully built a USB key for installing centos5.5 either manually or using a tool like unetbootin? I am trying to create one using the 64bit install DVD iso and so far the USB either won't boot (unetbootin) or the installation aborts after I select the iso location on the USB key (manual). Thanks, David

UEFI
Y'know, I was just reading an article about a Spanish Linux group filing a complaint with the EU regulators about UEFI, and I was struck by a thought: why is it that the OEM does not provide the UEFI key with the hardware FOR THAT BOARD AND UEFI, rather than have it provided by M$? Any clues (or should I just assume it's more M$ kickbacks...)? mark

OEM suggestions
Hey, folks, I'm working on finding some new compute nodes. What I'm looking for is a 64 core box, with room enough for a lot of RAM. I can get it from Dell, or HP (bleah! a 4U box), but I need to have three quotes, y'know. We've gotten a lot from Penguin in the past, but they're all Supermicro, and we've had a *lot* of problems with the 64 core boxes, so I'm looking

On Topic: Cheapest Asterisk USB Key? (was: Re: Off Topic: Open Source USB Softphone)
Here's a flipside of this subject: what is the absolute cheapest Linux device that can be connected to a PC's USB port? That has just enough power for a minimal Asterisk server running on it. The Asterisk just maintains a CDR database on its Flash memory, which it periodically submits over the PC's network connection with an HTTP hit on a remote full-service Asterisk server? No call

Help with 6.4 install on ASUS laptop
Hello all, Hoping someone can help me. I followed the instructions here: http://cedarboy.com/informational/install-centos-6-using-unetbootin-and-a-thumbdrive/with the exception that in step 8. (Now copy the same image into the root directory of the thumbdrive.) I could not find a directory labled /root/ so I copied the image to / the main directory where everything else is. Once the install

Bug-report: Memdisk regression for XMGR DOS memory manager
For the boot floppy at http://superkeen.com/peacecorpsfiles/FUZOMA14.IMG using memdisk from syslinux version 3.72 boots correctly, but for memdisk versions newer than 3.72 (I tested 3.73, 3.75, 3.85, and 3.86) all hang at boot with the following message: Loading boot sector... booting FreeDOS kernel - SVN (build 2039 OEM:0xfd [compiled Oct 2 2009]) Kernel compatibility 6.22 - BORLANDC ... Installing Cent OS from a usb flash drive
I recently acquired a Fujitsu Lifebook 1610. Unfortunately, the machine was missing a lot of the stuff that would've come with it brand new, mainly the usb cdrom drive. Currently, I'm running Fedora on it, and I installed it using a usb flash drive with the help of a program called unetbootin(Probably not spelled right). to load the ISO onto the USB drive. I've successfully used

[OT] Building a new backup server
Guys, I was thrown a cheap OEM-server with a 120 GB SSD and 10 x 4 TB SATA-disks for the data-backup to build a backup server. It's built around an Asus Z87-A that seems to have problems with anything Linux unfortunately. Anyway, BackupPC is my preferred backup-solution, so I went ahead to install another favourite, CentOS 6.4 - and failed. The raid controller is a Highpoint RocketRAID

Create a boot USB Key to repair a Dual-Boot Windows 7 and CentOS 6.7 PC
Hello, I have a dual-boot PC where Windows 7 is on one hard-drive and CentOS 6.7 is on another. Today I stupidly decided to update Windows 7 to Windows 10, but had nothing but BSOD. I then used Windows 10 to go back to Windows 7, but instead I again have BSOD. Anyone know how I can make a boot USB key so that I can re-install Windows 7 and then repair GRUB? Thank you, Brian Bernard

Issue with installation on wireless-only desktop workstation, CentOS 7(1511)
I realize that many on this list have likely applauded the NetworkManager package split that removed wireless stuff into its own package, NetworkManager-wifi, because for wired workstations and servers it might be desirable to not have any wifi software installed. And I believe it was a sound technical decision to do the split. However, in doing a fresh installation of what most call CentOS

yum update / kernal update failed - remove or repair
I have managed to find out what happened in the yum update and it turns out it was a mess. It looks like the server ran out of memory in the middle and things then started to fail. Any advice on how to recover from this would be greatly appreciated The log below shows: [root at vps2 ~]# yum history info 22 Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks Repository mariadb is listed more than once in
