NEWTON ALGORITHM
Hi, My name is Curtis and I'm a 1st year student in Biochemistry at the University of Geneva. I need some help completing the code for my NEWTON ALGORITHM. It is a bonus exercice to our autumn semester maths exam and we can hand it in or not. Usually people copy and paste but I decided to sit down and review theory and ask for help left right and center. My problem is that I cannot get my

H-F corr.: covariance matrix for interaction effect
Hi, I'm still not quite there with my H-F (G-G) correction code. I have it working for the main effects, but I just can't figure out how to do it for the effect interactions. The thing I really don't know (and can't find anything about) is how to calculate the covariance matrix for the interaction between the two (or even n) main factors. I've looked through some books

ANOVA non-sphericity test and corrections (eg, Greenhouse-Geisser)
I'm an experimental psychologist and when I run ANOVA analysis in SPSS, I normally ask for a test of non-sphericity (Box's M-test). I also ask for output of the corrections for non-sphericity, such as Greenhouse-Geisser and Huhn-Feldt. These tests and correction factors are commonly used in the journals for experimental and other psychology reports. I have been switching from SPSS to R

R-beta: postscript in R and R
I am creating postscript-graphics in R. When I import them into a LATEX document it is impossible to get the caption close to the figure. I run the same program in Splus, and no problem of getting the caption just below the figure. Another thing, the ps file that S created is only 10% of the size of the file that R created. What is wrong? Are there some parameters to be set? Helgi

displaying intensity through opacity on an image
Dear colleagues, I have an image which I can display in the greyscale using image. On this image, for some pixels, which I know, I want to display their activity based on a third measure. One way to do that would be to color these differently, and use an opacity measure to display the third measure. An example of what I am trying to do is at:

Someone change my printer default settings
Hello, I'm new in this group, and I can't found the answer of my problem anywhere. I read the HOWTO and explain something about it but I don't find the solution. Ok, the question is that I have SAMBA server with CUPS to share the printer and home between 34 linux and windowsXP machines. I put the drivers in a print$ share and all the people can install the driver only clicking in

Package portability issues
We have some new Solaris boxes (both Sparc and amd64), and as they are not yet in production use I borrowed some time on them to run tests over CRAN packages, using the Solaris make and Sun Studio compilers. The results were quite depressing. Sun Studio 12 compilers are also available for Linux, and there the problems are worse (for C++ code). Line endings ============ We checked in R CMD

OT: ps -> eps -> MS Word
I've created a bunch of postscript trees (post.rpart), which I subsequently edit in Adobe Acrobat 4.05 (I need additional labelling that isn't easy to add with R). After editing the labels and annotations using Acrobat, I then export the file to Adobe's .eps format so I can insert the picture into a Microsoft Word 2000 document. The .pdf file distilled from the .ps file is

R 3.1.0: 'R CMD Sweave' deletes non tex files created upon batch mode exit
Hi Martin, I use R CMD Sweave often as well, so thanks for looking into this. I have now tested some of my scripts with R-devel revision 65449 (2014-04-22) on 64-Bit Linux Mint 14. I can confirm Marc's report that running R CMD Sweave no longer deletes graphic files and retains created non-tex files (eps and/or pdf). What does not behave as before is the output printed to stdout, which

Problem with mapping, userid that gets sent by NT
I am having a problem with mapping drives to a samba server (1.9.18p4 and 1.9.17) that is very reproducible. The 1.9.18p4 is a modified server that has some special krb5 support in it (in addition to the stuff you previously added that I sent you). Here are two examples that are repeatable. Each is preceeded by killing any samba daemons that are for connections from the host in question.

Performance tips for heavily loaded servers
Does nayone have a collection of performance tips for heavily loaded samba servers? I have a server that routinely has 45-90 connections and just runs really poorly. We've thrown more memory at it w/ some benefit, but not significant. This is on a linux 2.0.35 based machine. Does anyone have any suggestions? -- Nathan ------------------------------------------------------------ Nathan

How to get nmbd to work?
I have NEVER been able to get nmbd to work in anything even remotely approximating a usable fashion. All I want it to do is DNS lookups. I can't even get it to do that reliably. It looks in some cases like it isn't even sending a response back to the querying clients. When I do a request that fails, I get this: --- nmb packet from 192.55.114.4(3175) header: id=8172 opcode=Query(0)
