What current Dell Systems are supported/work
Sorry for the repost... I don't think the first one posted.. posted to freebsd.stable, freebsd-current, Freebsd-hardware I checked the hardware in the online documentation manual/hardware It only lists the bits and peices of the machine say the hard drive controller and so forth. but doesn't give you a particular system to look at as a working machine with FreeBSD 6.2 does anybody

6.1-BETA4-i386-disc2.iso - only usr/share/doc, no usr/src?
Does the 6.1-BETA4-i386-disc2.iso contain only usr/share/doc, or for some reason i am unable to see anything else? I was looking for usr/src (and for a odd chance to have usr/ports); i suppose those two trees would be available somewhere on some disc for RELENG_6_1. I mounted the image as ... mdconfig -a -t vnode -f /path/to/6.1-BETA4-i386-disc2.iso -u 0 mount -t cd9660 /dev/md0 /mnt ...

ixgbe/ix sysctl missing in FreeBSD 9.2
Hello everyone, I am trying to tweak some of the sysctl tunables for the ix (ixgbe) driver in FreeBSD 9.2 since I am experiencing less than ideal performance and it seems like I can't find any: # sysctl -a | grep -i ixgbe device ixgbe I am running 9.2-RC4. Any input appreciated. Thanks, -- Rumen Telbizov Unix Systems Administrator <http://telbizov.com>

issue with ports
my ports database seems to have become broken. I'm running -stable, but haven't rebuilt the system in a year or so (I know, security vulerabilities, but the box has been shelved in this time). anyhow, at this point, I can't do even a make clean in ports, or build portupgrade. I fetched portupgrade with pkg_add hoping that running pkgdb -F would sort things out, but it errors with: **

em interface slow down on 8.0R
Hi, I noticed that network connection of one of my boxes got significantly slow just after upgrading it to 8.0R. The box has an em0 (82547EI) and worked fine with 7.2R. The symptoms are: - A ping to a host on the same LAN takes 990ms RTT, it reduces gradually to around 1ms, and then it returns to around 1s. The rate was about 2ms/ping. - The response is quite slow, but no packet

Slashdot thread references R/Quantian and another new R/S-PLUS book pending
Greetings all, Just a quick heads up that there is a Slashdot thread this morning on Open Source Math Software for Education, which includes references to R and Dirk's Quantian distribution (among others). The thread is at: http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/04/12/13/2355258.shtml?tid=185&tid=4 The OP's query was targeted for high school to first year college age students, but as

Slashdot: Building A Web-And Mail Server With CentOS 4.3
I may not agree with everything they say, such as ISPConfig (I prefer webmin) but this tutorial offers a "step by step opportunity for newbies". Does this indicate that CentOS is now a "mainstream" distro? (Technically speaking its not CentOS 4.3 but CentOS 4 Update 3 but we are not into semantics). Re: Slashdot: "Could Microsoft buy Red Hat?" -- this is a joke made by the clueless

People who even suggest this only expose their *0* understanding of business. Microsoft has an alliance with Sun. Why?

Turning off SMB1 make slashdot and theregister !
We can't do that until we provide a reasonable way for SMB1 clients to connect, probably via a SMB1 -> SMB2 proxy based on the NTVFS file server (where we had such a prototype until very recently). It won't be perfect SMB1, but needs to be enough for basic operation. I'm quite convinced Samba and SMB1 are critical infrastructure in many places and while we may dislike SMB1 for
