Samba 4 Alpha 17 to 4.0.x update - questions concerning S3FS / NTVFS
We had used Samba 4 alpha 17 for a long time and want to update our server now to Samba 4.0.x. The old Samba versions was using NTVFS and Samba 4.0.x is now using S3FS by default. So, what is the best practice now? Should we stay on NTVFS or should we switch to S3FS? The global part of our smb.conf looks like this: --- [global] interfaces = eth0 netbios name = PDC

For now it seems due to your smb.conf that you are not using the samba internal DNS server. It's not a must have, but samba does not provide dns. NetBIOS name should be equal to your

About s3fs in samba4
Reading Whatsnew.txt in samba I understand that If I use s3fs, as it is set by default in the provision step, I won't be able to modify GPOs later, right? So I have a couple of questions: - What's the advantage of using s3fs over ntvfs in new installations? - If I'm planning to deploy a new Domain, probably needing to change GPOs later, should I select ntvfs??? Best regards, Felix

Samba4 AD DC using s3fs an OpenIndiana/Illumos/Solaris
Hello! I've just built my first samba4 (4.0.5) on an OpenIndiana machine without any problems. But when it comes to the provision step the problems begin. Everything is fine, if I call samba-tool with the --use-ntvfs option. But I want to use samba4 with s3fs because of the support for newer SMB protocol versions. But when I call samba-tool without --use-ntvfs option I got the following:

File permission problems after update from Samba 4 alpha 17 to Samba 4.0.5
We had used Samba alpha 17 (included in Resara Server 1.2) for a long time and has now migrate it to Samba 4.0.5 (Ubuntu + Zentyal 3.0 PPA) with NTVFS enabled . Most things seems to work: DNS with Bind9_DLZ, domain join, user login and also GPO are still working fine :) But we have trouble with file permissions now! All domain users can't rename or delete their own files which they had

FreeBSD/ZFS/S3FS usage and development questions
I've noticed that the samba-tool ntacl sysvolreset --use-s3fs command does not work on a ZFS filesystem on FreeBSD. It does work if sysvol is moved to a volume that is able to be mounted with the acls flag. I will reference a ticket I started with FreeNAS here: https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/4351 As of version 9.2.1.1 s3fs is now the default using the workaround known for FreeBSD.

Samba4: no --use-ntvfs option on samba-tool ntacl sysvolcheck
In samba-tool, sysvolreset has options for either --use-ntvfs or --use-s3fs to set the permissions appropriately However, sysvolcheck does not have the same capability, and always attempts to verify in s3 vfs. Is this a known limitation in Samba 4.0.0 ?

samba4 PDC, smbstatus provides no info
Hi! I have successfully managed to migrate my samba 3 NT domain from gentoo to a fully operational samba 4 AD on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with roaming profiles, MMC management and what not. Over 50 users log into that daily. I've got a number of problems, but let's tackle them one by one. When I try to use smbstatus to check who is using the server and what files are being open, I'm getting:

RPC Server Unavailable Message
Greetings, We've been testing Sernet Samba AD and are running into trouble with the RPC server unavailable message when trying to edit group policy and manage users with Windows 8.1. Upon restarting the service, we can connect to the RPC server, but after 24 hours or less, we can no longer connect. I've been trying to find more information about this issue, which was apparently

AD migration issues
Hi , We migrated to AD account in a Ubuntu 16.04 (Samba 4.3.11)and came across issues with user shares. Some of the users were able to access the shares and some were not. The server in question has both AD and File and we followed the samba wiki to enable the Windows ACL To migrate , we ran the following samba-tool domain classicupgrade --dbdir=/var/lib/samba.PDC/dbdir --realm=lin.GROUP

samba4 vfs objects don't work
Hi It seems the vfs objects are not loaded. I've joined the domain with "samba-tool domain join DOMAIN DC -UAdministrator%Passwort --realm=DOMAIN.LOCAL --server=windows-dc.domain.local --use-ntvfs" The modules zfsacl.so and recycle.so exists in /usr/local/lib/shared-modules/vfs But neither the ZFS module nor the recycler works. Samba 4 Kerberos: Failed to decrypt PA-DATA
Hi everyone After almost 2 days up-time with Samba 4, it failed again. This time it simply will not restart. The krb5.conf had got corrupted. I replaced it with this one from /usr/local/samba/private /etc/krb5.conf [libdefaults] default_realm = HH3.SITE dns_lookup_realm = false dns_lookup_kdc = true It starts up OK: samba -i -d 3 lpcfg_load: refreshing parameters from
