Performance tests
I did some testing of vorbis codec (Winamp plugin) on a Pentium 166 MMX, and
found that the performance is pretty good. I got 3 % cpu utisization if I
turned dithering off, and 5 % otherwise. This was with a 138 kbit song. It's
pretty long to mp3 performance that was 0 to 1 % on that machine for a 128
kbit song.
Also vorbis seems to have a larger working set, because if I play two songs

speech in vorbis
I was wondering how vorbis fares as a speech codec? I
mean can it give similar or better quality as
GSM/Toast at the same kind of bitrates/filesize?
I'm not worried about streaming but I'd love to be
able to create really small voice files.
Can anyone give me an idea of filesize for recording
time for pure speech based use?
love

Possible channel coupling bug in encoder
I'm not sure that this is not my fault, but here it goes:
I'm trying to encode a 22 kHz Mono stream. I started with the encoder
example and made it take dynamic channels etc. This is how I init it:
vorbis_info_init(&VorbisInfo);
vorbis_encode_init(&VorbisInfo, 1, 22050, -1, 128000, -1);
then I get a crash in:
_vp_quantize_couple(vorbis_look_psy * 0x01e6a6ec,

If you just want to make static files available for playing individually,
you should use a web server such as apache instead.

Vorbis ACM codec
Is the Vorbis ACM codec still being maintained?
Then I encode an avi with Vorbis audio, the sound gets out of sync
after a while no matter what I try.

Small vorbis files with vorbisfile
I think I have bumped into the small file error, or I''m doing something
stupid. The files are short audio effects for a game (embedded in our own
data format).
Sample info:
Vorbis packets: 1 (4 kb)
Samples: 28672
Samplerate: 22 kHz
Channels: 2
This is what I''m doing when I want to get a number of bytes from the stream:
The problem is that ov_pcm_tell always returns 0. And so

new MS codecs
I thought this might be interesting to you, it's an
extract from the latest streaming media newsletter, I
was intrested to note that MS are claiming cd quality
audio at 48kbps whichi is obviously very low, I didn't
think much of it at first because nobody uses MS
codecs for audio anyway! However (a bit I missed off
this quote by the look of it) I then read mention of

Should FLAC join Xiph?
That is the question I put before you all tonight :)
(Short background, Xiph is the corp behind Vorbis and Ogg,
among other things; see http://xiph.org/about.html . I
think Emmett is here now so correct any of this if it's
wrong.)
I've been talking a little with Emmett Plant and Monty about
this. If it were to happen, it would mean the following:
1. FLAC would benefit from the

Vorbis memory consumption
I have been researching using vorbis for streaming (music and sound effects)
in our xbox game. As it turns out every stream takes about 300 kb when
decoding from it. This is pretty ok, if I only had to deal with one stream.
Unfortunately I have to be able to handle more streams simultaneously, and
400 kb would be ideal for all stream to take as a maximum.
Is it possible to share some of the

using vcut on split ogg files
hi,
I am recording a continuous 24/7 broadcast using ecasound, oggenc and
cronolog.
because the broadcast is continuous and to not lose any data, I split up
the recorded stream into a file for every 30 minutes using cronolog
(http://www.cronolog.org).
o the chain looks like the following:
ecasound | oggenc | cronolog
the problem is the following, because the oggfiles are split, they lack

Windows multimedia codec
I've been out of it for quite awhile, but now I'm back. I was wondering
if anyone has started writing a Windows multimedia codec for vorbis.
These little gems are quite useful for encoding the audio stream to be
interleaved with a video stream, and MPEG 4 video/Vorbis audio would be
quite useful.

Ogg Vorbis and MMX/3dnow
Are there any plans for Ogg Vorbis to support MMX/3dnow optimizations? I
think this is the major reason why the decoding of mp3's is faster than ogg
in XMMS.

Buying Vorbis Music
('binary' encoding is not supported, stored as-is)
Hello,
I don't know if you knew that there's a russian site where you can buy your
music in Ogg Vorbis.
There are many albums where you can decide what Codec (MP3, AAC, WMA, Vorbis,
MP+) and Bitrate (or quality for Ogg) should be used to encode and download the
files encoded specifically for you.
The prices are somewhat low.

music e-commerce using vorbis
Hi,
I am the CTO of an online e-commerce site selling signed underground
music. We're just about to begin with mp3 distribution by download. I have
looked into Ogg Vorbis, and it is interesting for us to both avoid the mp3
patent stuff (what's the legal status of Fraunhofer looking into any
possible patent infringements by Ogg?), and WMA. However, I still don't
think Ogg Vorbis is
