Hey' Can't seem to compile libao. I'm using Slackware-7.1-current-ish, linux-2.4.2, gcc-2.95.2, and alsa-9.0-beta2. This is the first time I've tried to compile libao so I don't know if the problem is related to alsa-9.0 changes. I think the basic problem is that configure can't find any C++ compiler on your system, which is required to build some of the libraries. It's kind of hard to imagine that Mandrake would supply gcc but not g++; maybe something else is wrong. Anyway, if you absolutely do not want any of the C++ stuff, you can just remove the following directories from SUBDIRS in src/Makefile libFLAC++
