RH6.0/Samba Oplock Problems (and fix)
To any one who is using Red Hat Linux 6.0 (or, presumably, any glibc2.1
system)
I recently installed a new RH 6.0 system on Intel. After installing my
samba and my network application I noticed that I was experiencing oplock
problems that were not present with the same version of Samba on my RH 5.2
systems and caused my application to not function. Since the problem
seems to be with oplocks I

question on downsampling
Hi,
Maybe a bit off topic for this list, bt anyway.
I have received several feature requests for DarkIce to support
downsampling of the audio input before passing it to lame or ogg vorbis.
For example the audio read from the soundcard would be 44.1kHz, and lame
would get it at 22.05kHz.
I figure two ways of doing this:
1. For lame, one can specify the input and the desired mp3 sampling
rate,

building on Red Hat 5.2
Hi,
I'm trying to build samba 2.0.5a on Red Hat 5.2. It originally came with
1.9something, which seemed to have some bugs accessing large mounted
directories. I downloaded Red Hat's updates package, but unfortunately it
only comes with smbclient and smbd, and what I need is smbmount and
smbumount. My binaries from my more recent systems (RH6 and OL2.2) won't
run due to

xmms module
Okay, here's my first hack attempt at an xmms module. I managed to link
(although not test) this with the current libvorbis CVS source (which
needed some "help" compiling) and xmms 0.9.5.1.
I'm guessing I made some fairly obvious mistakes in here which can be
hammered out even without bitstreams to test it on.

Trouble with codes from last snapshot!
Hi,
Picked up last night's snap ...
Building on my SGI O2 I get a big clipping problem ..
Using the encoder_example to encode e.g. a 1 sec 16 bit stereo wav
file, when I decode using decode_example I get clipping ...
any ideas here???? I can hear the original in the clipped mush!
The raw file plays just fine (on the SGI) and I have even decreased the
gain to 80% and removed any DC offset

centos on 64M 350Mhz pentimum II
All,
I have an old computer 64M 350Mhz pentium II.
centos os 4.1 installs on it fine. however on boot
it says low memory and it kills certain processes. httpd or sendmail.
I have a 2GIG swap and I did a chkconfig XXX off on a few things
like xfs, nfs, httpd, kudzu.
My old 2.4 kernel used to run in 4M with a swap...
I had recompiled the kernel (took a while) to enable the cyclades module.

Mouse Cursor drifts in some directx games
Hello,
I am currently attempting to run some windows games through wine, specifically Fable - The Lost Chapters and The Elder Scrolls III - Morrowind and I am experiencing problems with my cursor drifting during game play.
When I start the game (as soon as the menu screen) the mouse is initially stable, but after I move the mouse it will begin to drift vertically down at a constant speed

Need a bit of 'archeocomputing' help on CentOS 7.
I have an application with is binary-only, does its job well, and is
only available for either libc5 (!) or early early glibc2.0 (!!). It has
been running on a Red Hat Linux 5.2 (NOT RHEL; RHL) server for a really
long time, and it honestly does its job and it's not easily replaced by
an open-source solution at the moment.
So, I need to do one of the following things:
1.) Run Red Hat

Whee, I just _know_ I'm going to be positively skewered (and maybe even
plonked!) for this.... but, hey, it's Friday, and this post is meant to
be a bit funny.? So lighten up, and enjoy a short read.

flac metadata
So I've just ripped my entire 600 CD collection to flac format (200gigs worth) with vorbis comments in the flac metadata. But my gripe is that neither Winamp nor XMMS's flac plug-ins seem to have the ability to read the vorbis comment from the metadata. Are there any flac players for windoze or linux that can access the metadata? Or do i have to add redundant ID3 tags to all my flac

Initial samba + ldap howto
A couple of days ago I decided that I needed a samba and ldap
setup. After reading the samba mailing list , specifically the
thread "Re: [Samba] Samba and LDAP backend - howto docs problems?"
I decided to buy the Official Samba-3 HowTo and Reference guide",
(the Samba-3 By Example mentioned in that thread wasn't available
in my bookstore and they could't order it for me too)

XMMS 1.2.6 package in debian breaks xmms-flac
This is mostly to Matt Zimmerman. The xmms package in unstable was
updated to 1.2.6-1; that's fine.
Then I noticed my XMMS would no longer play FLAC files. I run testing,
not unstable, I thought. What could have happened?
That change was propagated into testing without an xmms-flac update! Huh?
This makes me wonder: xmms-flac 1.0.2-1 should depend on xmms = 1.2.5. I
think because this

xmms-flac security update breaks XMMS' flac-playing ability
that missing symbol appears only in libFLAC 1.2.1 or later, so it
sounds like the version dependencies in xmms-flac were not set up
to automatically pull in 1.2.1. check the versions of the other
flac packages on the machine (not sure what they're called in
ubuntu but probably flac or libflac) and make sure they're up to

Frustrated with Ubuntu XMMS, XMMS-Liveice, and icecast
I have XMMS and XMMS-liveice setup to use ALSA to stream audio to my
icecast server using LAME encoding.
I start the sound file and i can see XMMS playing away happily, icecast
detects the connection and shows the source as being connected, but no
bandwisth useage. If I connect to the icecast server I get a client
connection, but no sound.
Scanning other forums there appears that there might
