example code with streaming
Hello, I'm looking at vorbis for sending live audio over a network. This would probably be running on an embedded system (some challenges there, but that's ok). I've used the encoder example to get things compiling/running with sample data, but it seems to file based. Is there an example for streaming live audio? A secondary problem I may be running into is the amount of time to

Problems running example encoder/decoder
There isn't a lot of guidance on how exactly to run the codec I compiled out of cvs just now, but I expected the following to work: cat test.wav | encoder_example | decoder_example But the decoder fails with: End of file before finding all Vorbis headers! Is this a bug? Or am I missing something fundamental? Should I attach the test.wav? -- Daniel --- >8 ---- List

Sample still has horrorible distortions... anyone know why?
Hi, I am subscribed to this list, and have learned a lot just from the discussions i see although i don't reply to the msgs, simply coz i'm no big deal programmer. I feel, though, that as i'm really optimistic about vorbis and want it to grow and start to have more and more people using it, i feel that i should warn you about a bug the encoder have (i'm sure monty receives loads

Beta3 impressions
I tested Vorbis encoder - beta3 version, and here are my thoughts: - In comparison to beta2, subtle high-frequency artifacts seem to be gone (though they were small in beta2). Good job there! :-) - Velvet.wav also sounds better, but transparent quality is reached at -b256+. - Horn.wav still sounds very sucky, mode -b256 gives ~100kbps (this is understandable because in this sample practically

Fwd: Vorbis-java wav-ogg encoder produces distorted OGG file

wma8 decodings
Monty wanted some samples with which to compare Vorbis and WMA, and he doesn't have a Win32 machine, so I made some. Microsoft has made their own demo samples available at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/WM8/audio.asp I took their original .wav's, and encoded them with their wma8 encoder utility (WM8EUTIL.EXE), using all of the available stereo modes at 44.1kHz. acm codec
does there exist anywhere a useful source version of an ACM for vorbis audio? I've seen the binary one somewhere in Japan, and there's an abandoned project at SourceForge, but I'm having a helluva time building it. I know all the caveats about CBR vs. VBR, ACM/AVI problems etc. but I need it anyway. Thanks in advance - ___ Dan Miller (++,) Founder, CTO, On2.com --- >8 ----

Ogg streaming on low bandwidth
Hi, Was wondering if any gurus could tell me if it is possible to stream Ogg on very low bandwidth links (for example satellite phone) where the expected bandwidth would almost certainly be less than 19Kbps, and probably more like 10Kbps. I am not after great audio at this bitrate, mono with an audio bandwidth less than 5KHz. I have done some testing (not streaming though) listening to 8Kbps MP3

Interesting coding problem ..
Hi, I have a track which when encoded with Mode_C or even Mode_E does not encode well at all ... It's a jazz flute track with a lot of plate echo. The flute (centred in the mix) almost disappears ... I am away for a few days, but if someone would like to look at this I would be grateful ... A small clip can be grabbed from my ftp server ... ftp.york.ac.uk in:

Gargabe sound in ogg files
Hi, Some days ago I checked out the ogg vorbis stuff from cvs. I used the CDDA extracting tool to convert 1 of my disks to wav files. Then I encoded them to ogg. The sound was OK. The I wanted to do the same with another disk. But the ogg files containded short pieces of garbage sound. Sometimes first, sometimes last. They also caused more xmms segfault than the ogg files from the first disk.

Using a CBR when encoding to *.ogg
Greetings Fellow Vorbis Gurus! How can I encode, using CDex, at a CBR (constant bit rate) rather than the VBR? Also, can one take a 128kbs MP3 file and re-encode it to ogg? If so, please explain the procedure. By the way, I'm using a Windows based system. Thank you! /jp/ dojpaul@coffey.com --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage:

Oggenc ideas / source and request
Hello everybody, I've put some functions/modifications into the Ogg Vorbis encoder source. (The new functions are in the first 500 lines of the oggenc.c, some definitions are in the oggenc.h) I hope, you can use it. Here is the full source (same source on 3 locations): http://www.geocities.com/mpxplay/oggenc.zip http://www.tar.hu/mpxplay/oggenc.zip http://www.extra.hu/galileog/oggenc.zip

Write pure sine to *.ogg directly?
Hello, I am author of a Morse code training software written in Perl at http://starling.ws/morse Currently I output to *.wav and, if on Unix, convert to *.ogg. And that's okay for a trainer. But I have desire to upgrade the project to a real-time communication tool...or at least a Morse code audio mail routine. And I should like to avoid *.wav. I'd like some means of writing a pure

oggenc adds severe distortion
Hi all, I routinesly rips my CDs to WAV and then convert to ogg vorbis format for use in my car and portable player. I don't usually notice anything amiss, but on the last track of Mike Oldfield's "Music of the Spheres" album ("Musica Universalis", at the very end crescendo), the converted .ogg file exhibits terrible distortion (sounds like digital clipping). My Vorbis beta 2 impressions
Generally speaking, I can say that Vorbis already has pretty good quality, better then MP3. Mode 6 (~350kbps) - sounds great, no high-frequency artifacts and no pre-echo in any of my 3 test cases (I use 3 tracks as pre-echo test cases: 1. castanets.wav from LAME homepage 2. drums from the begging of the song Metallica - The Small Hours and 3. bass guitar from the begging of the song Primus - My

Impulses
After playing with the vorbis code for a while and doing tons of hacks and analysis on it, I've found it to perform very poorly with impulse signals. The MDCT seems to cause lots of spreading, and it seems to result in much worse impulse performance then mp3. What is the current plan on handling this? Will a smart quantizer be able to avoid it? I've been looking at various ways of

Replay to the 'oggenc ideas/source and request' replays
Dear Developer Team (Monty/Michael Smith/and others), It seems you get angry for me, but I don't understand why. I don't want to dispute with you, but maybe I forgot to say some things... Here they are: 1. My program (clone) is not a finalized, and NOT A RELEASED (public) program. This is just a test, I wrote it to myself, to the (sound quality) comparsion of MP3 and OGG. 2.

Bit Rate Peeling Quality
Hi All, Let me ask this question of the group: When bit rate peeling becomes available, how will the quality of the peeled Vorbis file compare to a file encoded at the target quality directly from the original? So, for: a.wav --> b.ogg (at q6) --> c.ogg (at q2) a.wav --------------------> d.ogg (at q2) how are c.ogg and d.ogg likely to compare in terms of audio
