Delay playing some streams on Android
I'm writing an Android app to play streams. ?I use the standard Android "MediaPlayer" library to play streams. ?I've noticed that some streams start playing without much delay (MPR), but others take quite a while to start (WFMU). ?The only thing changing in my code is the URI of the Icecast mountpoint. ?My test device is a Nexus 5 running Android 5.1.1.

Delay playing some streams on Android
I suppose you were pointing me towards the "burst-size" setting, but it's not totally clear. Please correct me if you meant something else.
I increased the burst-size to 131072 bytes, or 128 kibibytes. My Android app now plays the stream without much delay. I still don't know why I didn't notice this problem in an Android emulator.
Thanks for the pointer.

KPFA live vorbis stream
I just joined this list, so I'm not sure how many of you are already aware
of this. KPFA is a 59,000 watt free speech community radio station in
Berkeley, California that has been on the air since 1949. They were the
first listener sponsored radio station in North America, paving the way for
many other community stations across the U.S. and around the world. KPFA was
one of first signals to

building speex on macos x
this is very strange. the speex tar-ball contains the source for gnu's
getopt and getop_long and the configure script detects that i have no
working getopt_long. still the code is neither built nor linked. thus
my solution was to compile the getopt source (i replaced them with
files from the latest gengetopt btw. i have no idea why i did that) and
then link speexenc and speexdec by hand

Group membership lost unpredictably
Hi,
I have a very bizarre problem linking to my Active Directory from my Ubuntu
11.10 system. I have three AD users setup with them belonging to a
specific AD group. When I first login a user onto my Ubuntu system, that
user is shown to be a member of the group:
wbinfo -r <user>
And if I show the group members, it also lists my user:
wbinfo --gid-info <gid>
However - after a

VDQ : Have I made a wine's nest?
Very Dumb Question here -- basically, am I in trouble? Or in other words,
I have to ask myself a Falstaffian question: "Which .wine, Bezonian?"
Let me expound.
On several lists for different parts of the problem, according to their
interest and my best judgment, I've been pursuing the topic of GPS/topo
map settings, under Crossover Office Pro 5.0.1 (CXO) using Fedora Core 4,

Recieving Ogg streams on a Mac?
I have yet to speak to a single Mac user who has successfully received a
live or archived Ogg stream. I'm been told neither MacAmp nor Quicktime will
accept streams, they only play files.
Are there any Mac users on this list who can recommend a player (from
personal experience) which actually plays Ogg streams?

CBC radio's science show archives Ogg
Earlier today while listening to CBC radio's national science show
"Quirks and Quarks", I was pleasantly surprised to hear that their audio
archives are now offered in Ogg, in addition to mp3 and real. This is
the first CBC show that I am aware of that offers their archives in
formats other than the usual real/wma/qt.
For those who don't know, CBC is Canada's only

resampling to 48 kHz
One thing that has always bothered me about the ogg
format is the distortion of high frequency sounds -
even at data rates as high 128 and 160 kbps. I find
the best way around this is to resample the wav file
to 48 kHz (using SoundForge 6.0) before encoding
(using CDex) to ogg. It takes a while, and adds a lot
of extra wear and tear on my drive, but what a
difference! The result is an 80k ogg file

Well done!
Great job!
I'm considering converting all my mp3 files to Vorbis format. Only
examples/encoder_example is a bit too simplistic (of course, being an
example), and the cmdline tools aren't ready.
I encode my mp3 files at 96 kbit/s, because that's enough for me.
Will Vorbis do well at this rate? Any quick hacks I can make to
examples/encoder_example.c?
Perhaps Vorbis is of interest

CentOS promotion
I've been to FOSDEM this weekend and noticed the small number of CentOS
people at the booth.
The Ubuntu people work with Local Community Teams to support and promote
the distro.
I think it would be beneficial for CentOS to setup a similar structure.
At the moment it's mostly sysadmins who introduce/sneak CentOS into
businesses.
Local Community Teams can setup a booth at computer fairs

[LLVMdev] Cambridge LLVM Social Today!
Hi folks,
The Cambridge social is today, and with this weather, we'll be at the fort
st. George, hoping that there are no fairs outside to compromise our beer
enjoyment programme.
See you at the George around 7:30!
Cheers,
Renato
