automatic gain control
>Fromwhat you describe, your comp/limiter can't possibly be working
correctly. It should be the last unit in line before the sound card, and
needs to be adjusted properly. You also need to balance the levels on your
mixing board (so that the correc t level comes at predictable place on the
slider). It might be worthwhile to find someone with some sound-mixing or
radio engineering experience

Gain control
How are people doing gain control, out of curiosity?
I know boxes exist (anyone have names and mfrs?) that ride the gain
for big radio stations, ensuring that there is no distortion and
raising the volume of songs recorded at a lower volume. I'd probably
buy one if I knew what to buy.

Run the signal through a Compressor/Limiter before sending it to your
soundcard. I use Behringer Ultra-Dyne Pro DSP9024. Very nice. If you
want to buy it look here:

Polycom wideband codecs?
Doing a little research before Friday's Voip Users Conference call with
Dan Behringer.
Are any of the newer Polycom wideband codecs implemented in v1.6?
Specifically, G.722.1 or G.722.2?
Thanks,

Interesting coding problem ..
Hi,
I have a track which when encoded with Mode_C or even Mode_E does
not encode well at all ...
It's a jazz flute track with a lot of plate echo.
The flute (centred in the mix) almost disappears ...
I am away for a few days, but if someone would like to look at this
I would be grateful ...
A small clip can be grabbed from my ftp server ...

It has been a long time since I needed to ask a Samba technical question.

Applying dynamic compression to live audio
Hi:
I want to stream audio from my soundcard, but I'd like to apply some
dynamic compression to it first (ala winamp's audiostocker plus shoutmuxer
thingy). I heard rumours of compression in liveice, but Iv'e been told
that this only works when it plays from prerecorded MP3, not the live
input. I'd like to do this with darkice, but can't see how it could be
done. I guess

OT: Plate Echo
Oooh Plate Echo was what people had before digital
reverbs! (When they didn't have spring reverb!) - Long
ago... They are quite rare now because only big
studios had them as they took up a lot of room! (and
then they threw them all away)
*jealous*
Do you really have a plate reverb or just a digital
simulation?

And just what exactly is an optimized sized packet? I need numbers in
bytes.
I want control over it for a very specific reason.
Thanks.

User Agent string
I'll admit I've not poked around the icecast source, but seeing as I came
across this issue on another server (and subsequently on clients):
How many servers depend on the User Agent field sent by a client?
In looking thru the Streamripper source and the Litestream source, It
appears that many servers depend on that field. I realize a lot of this
has to do with the fact that it then

MTU was: Re: my icecast problem
It is going to depend on a number of factors. Linux sets (along with a
few other OS's I'm sure) its MTU to 1500. The problem is, if you set it
longer then it will most likely be frag'd by your router. If that router
does not, then another will.
I think MTU for ppp interfaces are smaller.
Likewise, if your backbone is FDDI, it has a large frame (somewhere in the
8000 range I

Red alert people.
When ogg starts to make money for someone (whoever if anyone at all,) then the boys in the legal team at Fraunhofer will throw something at it in the form of "hey, you are stepping on our IP" and then sue. Until then, what is the point. So....
Until then, this argument is pointless.
