build / release engineers' todo
The code went 'gold' tonight. Vorbis 1.0 is in CVS and it's time to hand off to release engineering. I've updated the vendor strind in the libvorbis code, but all other instances of version number need to be updated as well. I know this is set in a million places, for autoconf, debian, redhat, Mac and Win projects, etc... This is the real 1.0. Mark as such before building.

Cascading?
During the interesting interview that binaryfreedom has made with Monty and Jack, Monty mentions cascading, a feature that will be added, quote: "Cascading is the ability to make multiple passes through the frequency spectrum, iteratively filling in more detail, like a progressive jpeg". What are the advantages of something like this - does this generally improves quality or is it used

Short block test
Frank Klemm made the clip to test short block switching - it's made of series of short periodical 'pulses', and this period gets smaller as time passes. You can get this file at: http://www.uni-jena.de/~pfk/Short_Block_Test.wav.gz.gz (1.6MB) (uncompress it twice with gzip) I used oggenc beta3 & mp+ 1.7.8 Oggenc gave 160kbps using mode -b 256 mp+ gave 350kbps (using

Some pre-RC1 listening tests
Hello everyone, ff123 compiled Monty's branch of the RC1 encoder, see his post on r3mix.net forum: http://66.96.216.160/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=c&action=display&num=994299736&start=30 Anyway it only supports ~128kbps mode, so I did a quick listening test with some files that bugged vorbis beta4. grace.wav - the right channel is still a bit watery, and I think this can be seen

Beta3 impressions
I tested Vorbis encoder - beta3 version, and here are my thoughts: - In comparison to beta2, subtle high-frequency artifacts seem to be gone (though they were small in beta2). Good job there! :-) - Velvet.wav also sounds better, but transparent quality is reached at -b256+. - Horn.wav still sounds very sucky, mode -b256 gives ~100kbps (this is understandable because in this sample practically

unimplemented features
Hi, i noticed monty mentioning in another thread that there were a few features left to implement for beta4. Does that mean that when beta4 comes out i have to reencode all my oggs to make sure i get the full possible quality out of them? If that were so i better wait with encoding my more obscure cds (e.g. those i listen to only rarely) until an feature complete encoder is available. zal

RC3 ?
I couldn't catch Monty on IRC, so I'll ask here... how's RC3 coming along? Can we expect RC3 anytime soon, and what are the main improvements over RC2? -- Vorbis Xtreme | http://solair.eunet.yu/~aldov/ Ogg Vorbis - free, open source audio __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? subdirectories with different permissions
Several users keep asking for a similar setup, and I'm wondering if there's a way to achieve it with a single samba share. They'll ask for a single share drive the has multiple subdirectories with each subdirectory having different permissions based on groups. So say you have a share called COLOURS and inside that share are three subdirectories, RED, GREEN and BLUE. Group1

wireless card for CentOS
Hi, I'll need to buy a new wireless card. I need a recommendation for PCMCIA wireless card that simply works with CentOS out of the box. By "works out of the box", I mean that it doesn't need ndis wrapper (or whatever it is called), kernel hacks, or whatever. Thanks

joint stereo - advantages / when?
Hello, I've been postponing some of my encoding for when joint stereo gets implemented. The reason I've been doing this, is that I am under the impression this is the largest step in the quality/bitrate ratio that's left. Now I'm wondering if I am correct in thinking this. lame's documentation seems to imply it doesn't make much of a difference at higher than 128kbps (I

New Member seeks advice.
Sorry about that! I realized I had made the mistake of just changing the subject title minutes after I had posted. If I broke a second rule I am not sure what it was but if two out of three is all I managed to break, with almost no effort on my part I am sure I could bat 1000! I will check the Speex cite you recommended. I will likely have some questions. Thanks, Michael

vbscript in wine
Hi there, I'm having an issue with vbscript in wine. It relates to a problem with the cardbox database client which you can see here: http://www.cardbox.com/wine.htm I get the Cardbox error message and pressing OK will return me to the Cardbox window, indicating vbscript is not installed. First I just ran the installer which I found here:

API cleanups, bugfixes
OK, I've been a busy beaver tonight. More commits: Finished stabilizing psychoacoustic configuration API; binary compatability stability for libvorbis/vorbisfile would be nice to have by 1.0. Moved several additional return values and internal types to int64_t; basically wherever there's an absolute fine-grained counter. I also moved the vorbisfile API to taking a 64 bit seek callback
