Lossy Audio Compression Research
Hello everyone,
I'm a student at the Universtiy of Delaware, and will be soon starting
some research on the effects of lossy audio compression on speech sounds. I
will be preforming test with both mp3 and vorbis.
First of all, if I use the '--ogg' switch to lame, does lame use GPSYCHO
to encode the wave, or some other psychoacoustic model (perhaps one designed for

Removing Vorbis tags
Hello everyone,
Was wondering if there was an option or program somewhere that can delete all tags associated with an Ogg Vorbis file?

[line-in.to.ogg]
hello, people!
could you advice me some kind of computer audio recording programme
to write music 'on-the-fly' from line-in sound card exit to ogg
vorbis file directly. for example, there is an 'absolute mp3
recorder', but i would like to record audio in ogg vorbis.

who needs documentation?
Okay, my responsibilities at school have recently eased up a bit, and I might
have some actual free time over the coming months. So I'd like to volunteer
my services to write some needed documentation, tutorials, FAQs, etc.
I am "fluent" in C and C++ and am not bad at Perl. I have been told I'm good
at explaining things. I am anal-retentive about grammar, syntax, and

Psycho-acoustics research
Hi.
I'm an undergraduate linguistics major and computer science minor at
the University of Colorado in Boulder, and am taking a couple classes
this semester which give me the opportunity to do a research project -
one on introductory acoustics in the physics department, and one in
the linguistics department on phonetics and phonology. I've got an
idea, but I'd like to hear from anyone

Ogg and Vorbis questions
>From the top of vorbisfile.c:
/* A 'chained bitstream' is a Vorbis bitstream that contains more than
one logical bitstream arranged end to end (the only form of Ogg
multiplexing allowed in a Vorbis bitstream; grouping [parallel
multiplexing] is not allowed in Vorbis) */
Is this paragraph talking about multiple streams in a single Vorbis stream in an
Ogg, or is it talking

This is very true. I can easily hear MP3

just an idea about quality evaluation
Hello
I had an idea about judging the quality of ogg vorbis
(or any other lossy codec)
I took a wave-file and encoded it to ogg.
Then decoded ogg to wav and inverted it's phase. When mixing the original
wav with the phase-inverted decoded ogg-file, any identic parts of compressed and uncompressed audio should be eliminated.
Of course there's always a "rest" of sound because

Rio Karma mini review
Hello everyone,
Stopped by Best Buy last night and picked up a Rio Karma. Since
from-the-trenches reviews seem scarce, I thought I might post some
thoughts.
The short story: I'm probably returning it, will be buying a
different portable player. The software doesn't work, and I don't think
I wanna screw with it.
The long story: It looks cool, is tiny,

rsync with --exclude files
HI,
I'm trying to exclude some files & directories from a filesystem which I
would like to copy to a different site. I did:
# rsync -avz --exclude-file=/fs21/tmp/perl_scripts/exclude.txt
/fs22/a/circuit_design mickey.willow.com:/cpu/store/design
where file /fs21/tmp/perl_scripts/exclude.txt contains the following
directories and files to be excluded from /fs22/a/circuit_design :

Is this just anti-Ogg FUD?
I was recently talking to a friend of mine who produces what's widely
referred to as "techno", music that's heavy on electronically generated
loops and effects, samples, and has plenty of bass.
He doesn't like ogg for a few reasons - he sent me a rather long email, and
I've stripped out the nonsense from it (he has some technically irrelevant
reasons for not liking

NaNs in Nested Mixed Model
Dear R users,
I have a problem with something called "NaNs" in a nested mixed model.
The background is that I have studied the number of insect nymphs
emerging from replicated Willow genotypes in the field. I have 15
replicates each of 4 Willow genotypes belonging two 2 Willow species.
Now I want to elucidate the effect of Willow genotype on the number of
emerging nymphs. Previously I

Possible bug in Vorbis
Hello all,
Today I noticed a potentially serious bug in Vorbis encoding. I'm still
using RC2, so perhaps it's already been reported and cleared up. While
listening to a recording of Moxy Fruvous's "Gulf War Song", I noticed that the
vocals at the very beginning clearly have their high frequencies quite
attenuated. Sounds like it was recorded through a piece of

Weird problem - one machine works another doesn't on new server - both OK on old one.
Hello and Thanks in Advance,
I've been at this for three days now and can't think of anything else to
try. Been through the docs and #samba on openprojects and even begged
for direction in #samba-technical who suggested writing here.
On the ancient RedHat 5.2 server (SAMBA 1.9?) both boxes work OK and
continue to work OK with both servers now up (new one is from Mandrake

/etc/passwd.rpmnew changes "x" to "*"
What would be the effect of changing the password field in "/etc/passwd" from "x" to "*"? I noticed I have an "/etc/passwd.rpmnew" file which changes the password of many service accounts from "x" to "*". I am wondering if I should merge those changes into my "/etc/passwd" file.

qemu-img not compiled?
I''m running latest 3.1.4. I need access to qemu-img to convert some image
files. However this binary is not compiled after doing make world and make
install. I notice that the source code is present, but I cannot figure out
how to make it compile and install along with qemu-dm?
Am I missing something?

Something is really broken at your side. Are you running Vista?
