trying to get better ogg quality for this clip
hi folks, in my (unlucky) first test of ogg vs other encoders, i found a
case where wma and mp3pro sound much better than ogg at 64k. can anyone
suggest a setting that i haven't tried yet that can rival the wma and
mp3pro samples at 64k? it's the "gravel effect" that is troublesome.
the part in question is the first 15 seconds of this wave file:

Turning off SMB1 make slashdot and theregister !
We can't do that until we provide a reasonable way for SMB1 clients to
connect, probably via a SMB1 -> SMB2 proxy based on the NTVFS file
server (where we had such a prototype until very recently).
It won't be perfect SMB1, but needs to be enough for basic operation.
I'm quite convinced Samba and SMB1 are critical infrastructure in many
places and while we may dislike SMB1 for

Vorbis got TheRegistered
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/26176.html
Loads of publicity already before the release ... :) I hope this doesn't
create any more outages, especially of CVS.

SharpEye: www.visiv.co.uk
I have been running SharpEye under Wine for a few weeks now. There
are a couple of problems
1) The fonts don't always appear correct. Sometimes they correctly show as
Arial, sometimes as SmallCaps
2) Can't get TWAIN to work - see earlier message
3) The pull down menus display as XMFile etc. instead of File etc. The author
of SharpEye says this is a bug in Wine.

If one of the authors is listening:
http://www.asteriskdocs.org/html/apas02.html
lists usereqphone 2 times. One of the entries should really
be useragent. And the example for usereqphone is wrong.

Comment Re: http://www.openssh.com/faq.html#3.2
The analysis given in section 3.2 of the portable OpenSSH FAQ regarding
"Empty passwords not allowed with PAM authentication"
appears to be specific to Linux's pam_unix.so. No mention is made that
this is in fact a Linux-specific remedy. Some text should probably be
added to this extent.
If anyone has worked on this on Solaris 8 I'd be interested to hear what

Listing of oggdropXPd at http://www.vorbis.com/software/
Could I request, please, that the link on this page that currently
points to: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jfe1205/OggVorbis/ be changed to
point to: http://www.rarewares.org/ogg-oggdropxpd.php
It is simply that the Rarewares site can support a much greater
bandwidth than I can and I usually update it ahead of my own webspace.
(It's also a 'proper' web site rather than just an ftp

[thomas@arkena.com: [vorbis] mp3pro and the mp3 streaming license]
Thomas,
You should post this hear, as it's just as relevant ;)
Hey guys, how do you feel now that you all owe Thompson $2k per year?
Vorbis look more interesting now :)
It's really disgusting how the technology is now worth more than the
music.
jack.

MP3. LAME does not do MP3Pro. And in fact, the stream that is reencoded
will also only be a reencode of the MP3-compatible layer of the MP3Pro
stream, as Ices does not know how to decode MP3Pro streams

trouble in nullsoft land.
well, I'm not sure that's the reasoning...
from Tom P :
"i'm making changes to yp which will detect the presence of mp3pro within a
non-encapsulated stream and prohibit its listing. nsv/nsa is an open
protocol and the authors who wish to broadcast with this format should a)
rewrite the stream provider to encapsulate and broadcast in the
encapsulated protocol, b) discuss with
