Suggestion!
Hey guys,
Keep up the goodwork! I have a suggestion...why not make Ogg Vorbis
streamable through QTSS or Darwin Streaming server. The people at
Apple are willing to incorporate it I'm sure. Would be nice to be able
to stream Ogg Vorbis from with QTSS or Darwin Server!! Lemme know what
you think!

Shorewall and LVS-NAT (via fwmark) nat'd machines can't access the outside world directly
Hi guys,
I''m not sure where to post for help on this one, shorewall or lvs, I''ll
start with shorewall (only cause Tom is a gun at this stuff, and is polite
enough to tell me to bugger off to the LVS list if I''m posting in the wrong
one ;)
I have a single box that is my router/firewall/LVS.

bind blocking rsync
Hi Guys,
Here is the setup.
LVS NAT cluster with director (dir), backup director (bdir), and two
realservers (rs1 and rs2) running apache webserver.
SSH DSA key-based authentication set up between rs1 and rs2 in order to
facilitate automated (via cron) mirorring of htdocs directories. All
works fine untill I decide to host DNS on the same cluster. As soon as I
start BIND on rs1, ssh no longer

Packages for R-CRAN (organizing aspects)
Hello,
I have some ideas for packages that I want to provide on R-CRAN.
One package alreads is working, but I have some warnings in
when compiling. Also I don't know if the libraries in use are only
working on Unix/Linux.
So I have some general questions:
- If I'm not sure if the code would also work on windows
(needing some ceratain libraries or tools),
would it be better to

\U with more than 4 digits returns the wrong character
If I type a character using \U syntax that has more than 4 digits, I
get the wrong character. For example,
"\U1d4d0"
should print a mathematical bold script capital A. See
http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/1d4d0/index.htm
On my machine, it prints the Hangul character corresponding to
"\Ud4d0"

specialness of ''local'' table..
Hi all,
When try to move a local route (for an ip addr configured locally) to a
different route table from the local one I can no longer ping the address.
My suspicion is that the local (0) table is "special" and used directly
without regard for the rules in some circumstances, but I''d like to
confirm that what I''m trying to do isn''t possible before giving up!

\U with more than 4 digits returns the wrong character
Great spot, thanks Mark.
This really ought to appear somewhere in the ?Quotes help page.
Having a warning under Windows might be nicer behaviour than silently
returning the wrong value too.

How to print UTF-8 encoded strings from a C routine to R's output?
Dear R experts,
It seems that Rprintf has to be used to print from a C routine to guarantee
to write to R?s output according to
https://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/r-release/R-exts.html#Printing.
However if a string is UTF-8 encoded, non-ASCII characters (e.g., the
infinity symbol http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/221e/index.htm)
are misprinted.
Is this an unsupported feature or is

plus/minus +/- in factor; not plotmath not expression
I want to put the "plus or minus" symbol into a character variable, so that this can be turned into a factor and be displayed in the "strip" of a faceted ggplot2 plot.
A very nice solution, thanks to Professor Ripley's post of Nov 16, 2008; 3:13pm, visible at http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/Symbols-to-use-in-text-td874239.html and subsequently

Mime types
Hello,
Does anyone know how to configure the mime type for ogg on Apache (on a
FreeBSD box)? I added application/x-ogg to the mime.types file in Apache,
but Nutscrape6.2 and Mozilla 0.9.5 just show the file in txt format, IE5x on
the other hand kindly asks me what to do with the file (open it or download
it). I also added the mime-type in Nutscrape62 and Mozilla and added Winamp

I have a Digital Unix Version 4.0B and openssh works fine excect for
sftpd. I can do most things things with sftp (copy files, change
directories) but when I do an ls it drops the connection. This is with the
most recent version of openssh "OpenSSH_2.5.1p1". I have included the
output of sftpd -v -v . OpenSSH was complied with the gcc version 2.95.2 19991024

stick with OGG for the time being.

Names of data frame columns in an apply
Hi,
[some background]
I have a dataset which describes a number of subjects doing a "scientific
discovery". That is, they have to discover the rules underlying a
particular domain. To do so, they have to set the levels of 5 variables
which leads to a certain outcome. To identify what kind of "experiments"
the subjects did, I want to combine these levels into one variable

\U with more than 4 digits returns the wrong character
Richie,
The R language definition [1] says (10.3.1):
\Unnnnnnnn \U{nnnnnnnn}
(where multibyte locales are supported and not on Windows, otherwise
an error). Unicode character with given hex code ? sequences of up to
eight hex digits.

A warning in gzcon but not in gzfile
Hi all,
I used `gzfile` and `gzcon` to read a compressed file but I found that
`gzcon` gave me a different result than `gzfile`. It seems like the `gzcon`
does not handle the data correctly. I have posted an example below. In the
example, a portion of a compressed file is downloaded from Google Cloud as
a raw vector, and the data is saved into a temp file. If I use ` gzfile` to
read the file, it
