masking problems in Vorbis beta?
Hi all, I just came across the following page: http://r3mix.net In the "News" section there is a fairly negative critique of Vorbis; especially it is mentioned that Vorbis "has terrible masking problems". There is also a Vorbis-encoded frequency sweep which shows strong deficiencies at high frequencies, but I suppose this is due to the quite low bitrate of the distributed

default quality settings...
I use "jack" for my ripping, changed a few things here and there to get the "right" switches for oggenc. I reported a wishlist item to it's author to make the defailt -q instead of specifying bitrate. So for the time being he has set it to -q5, without the ability to specify quality on the command line, like bitrates for mp3. -q5 sounds high to me. He said it should be at

Nullsoft Vorbis Decoder v1.13a (BUG)
Hi, there. Thanx for the update, Peter. That scrolling stuff working...but this time, the information on the artists and the titles are not displayed on the playlist till the song is being played. Is this happening to only me (I am on Win98SE)? At r3mix forum (http://r3mix.net/forum or http://r3mixforum.cjb.net), there is a high-level discussion on the channel coupling implementation on RC1

Using the vorbis psychoacoustics model
Hi, I need a psychoacoustics model for some experiments and would like to use the one included in vorbis. Is there any documentation about how to use it? Looks like the relevent code is in psy.c, but I can't go further. Also I would like to know whether I can be of any help in vorbis. I have some knowledge in speech coding (I doing my master at the University of Sherbrooke's speech

Some pre-RC1 listening tests
Hello everyone, ff123 compiled Monty's branch of the RC1 encoder, see his post on r3mix.net forum: http://66.96.216.160/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=c&action=display&num=994299736&start=30 Anyway it only supports ~128kbps mode, so I did a quick listening test with some files that bugged vorbis beta4. grace.wav - the right channel is still a bit watery, and I think this can be seen

ogg to mp3 conversion
Howdy folks, currently i am using a cygwin32 build of all tools on NT here at work. most of my cd's are ripped to ogg files, but my mp3diskman is.. well an mp3 player. (http://www.soul.com.hk Its a nice player!) i use: ogg123.exe -d raw -f - "filename.ogg" | lame --r3mix -r - filename.mp3 Is there a better way of doing this, for instance passing the tags through as well? I am

Renegade MPEG member: Intro and volunteerism
Hi nice Vorbis people, I've been following the work on Ogg and Vorbis for some time, and I've been very impressed with the work so far. I'd like to introduce myself and volunteer for some work as it's needed. I'm very excited about the prospect of developing open-source audio coding technologies that are not encumbered by patents, and think this has the potential to be very

Getting masked FFT data out of libvorbisenc
[Apologies if this gets through twice. I sent it first without subscribing, but it seems like it got stuck in the moderation queue, so I subscribed and re-sent it.] I'm doing some work on audio fingerprinting for a school project (more precisely, my master's thesis. I got a hint on #vorbis that I might want to look into the internal floor representations in libvorbisenc to get out audio

bitstream problem: resyncing...
This one really has me stumped. I'm running 866MHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB Disk (7200RPM) on Linux-mandrake 8.2 icecast 1.3.12 & ices 0.2.3 & lame 3.91 all mp3s encoded with lame 3.91 or higher and --r3mix (VBR) Sorry for the long email but I'm hoping to get someone out there that's seen this before and give me some advice... I'm continually getting errors like this when running

Impulses
After playing with the vorbis code for a while and doing tons of hacks and analysis on it, I've found it to perform very poorly with impulse signals. The MDCT seems to cause lots of spreading, and it seems to result in much worse impulse performance then mp3. What is the current plan on handling this? Will a smart quantizer be able to avoid it? I've been looking at various ways of

One codebook for all audiofiles?
[ I'm not in the list because I didn't find a digested version; please move the lists to sourceforge.net, and we would have the digested version. I read the replies from the archive. ] Hello. Would it be possible to allow Vorbis use the same codebook for multiple files? I could keep a 650 MB codebook on CD-R and use that for all my audiofiles. If that is possible, how much the

Plotting labeled impulses: label collision
Dear all, As you can see from the attachment I'm using R to automatically annotate peptide fragmentation mass spectra, which are represented by impulse plots. I'd like to poll you on approaches of how to deal as generally as possible with the two biggest annotation issues I run into: 1) very close annotated masses (impulses) with similar y-axis dimensions - resulting in overlapping labels

Web-based forum for Vorbis discussion
Hi all, a web based forum has been set up for discussion about Ogg Vorbis. It's meant to be a home for both technical issues and general usage questions. If you were familiar with the old r3mix forums, this is more or less the next generation. It also includes forums for MPC, AAC and MP3/MP3Pro discussion. Further listening test (including the Vorbis ones) are also going to be conducted

Merge done
The merge of the format changes and new psychoacoustics is complete. There's still tuning work left to do (most notably there's a somewhat higher-than-acceptable level of background low-midrange/upper bass noise; this is due mostly to incomplete psychoacoustic modelling data in the 100Hz-500Hz range) however, at this point, pending bugfixes, the Vorbis 1.0 stream format is frozen.

more fun with LAME - error in bitstream?
Hi folks! Having trouble with re-encoding to 160Kbps. I have: Linux-Mandrake 8.2 Icecast 1.3.12 IceS 0.2.2 source Lame 3.92 Hardware is: Celeron 533 w/256MB RAM, 40GB Disk All seems to work at first but after a few songs it craps out and give me an ERROR WITH BITSTREAM (or something real close...sorry). ALL of my MP3s are encoded using the --r3mix flag (VBR) with LAME 3.91 or 3.89. All

State of Vorbis, 20000409
Hello folks, An incredible amount of work got done in the past week and a half. And I missed the arbitrary, meaningless launch deadline. Not much new there... In the past week, developers contributed plugins for Winamp (thanks Jack and Michael), and kmpg (thanks Martin). Sonique added Vorbis support (thanks Andrew), although that won't appear in the 1.5 version just released; expect to
