memory issues -- mongrel part of the problem?
Hi. I''m a fairly new mongrel user and have a scenario that I wanted to run by you all, see if anyone''s synapses connect -- mine def. aren''t! I''m running a fairly simple rails app through a mongrel cluster (2 mongrels). This site is consistently sloooow -- memory on the server is regularly paging (and shouldn''t be). ssh-ing in and running top shows

Getting "Invalid HTTP format, parsing fails." from one client
Hi! I am new to Mongrel but really like it so far. We''ve been running a single instance for our test server for about a week now. When one of our editors accesses the site, they receive a blank white page in Firefox and/or IE6/Win. In Mongrel logs we see this: Wed Aug 09 16:25:30 PDT 2006: BAD CLIENT (192.168.2.42): Invalid HTTP format, parsing fails. Wed Aug 09 16:25:31 PDT

Error on Solaris
Hi everyone, I''m having a problem starting rails on solaris. I have made the changes suggested in the joyeur article but it doesn''t make any difference. The error is below. Does anyone have any idea? /opt/csw/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-0.3.13.3/lib/mongrel.rb:666:in `register'': undefined method `resolve'' for nil:Mongrel::URIClassifier (NoMethodError)

Debugging high CPU with Mongrel
I''m running a site that gets ~30k to 40k page hits per day. In the last 4 days my mongrel processes have been jumping into high CPU usage a couple of times a day to the point where my site becomes unresponsive (database on a diff machine with no load). The only way for me to resolve the problem and reduce load on the machine is to delete my rails cache directory (I have plenty of space

Mongrel & Mint (PHP related)
Hi, Does anyone have the Mint stats package setup with their Rails application. I have uploaded Mint to the public folder, but when I try and request domain.com/mint/index.php the page is served as a download instead of being processed by mod_php. Im guessing this isn''t really a Mongrel problem but what I actually need to do is prevent Apache proxying certain requests to Mongrel.

layout not seen by some clustered mongrel instances
Hi -- I have setup a fairly simple Rails site. It uses a layout and 4 clustered instances of Mongrel running on ports 8001 through 8004. The instance of Mongrel running on port 8001 seems to work perfectly. For some reason, the other 3 instances Mongrel are behaving as though they don''t see the layout. Does anyone know why that is; and, more importantly, what to do about it? Thanks.

mongrel & apache on Win32
I am thinking about migrating a Java based Web Application to Ruby & Rails. Before I start the work I need more information about the runtime environment. I am forced to use Windows 2003 Server and I need SSL. My Java Web Apps all run on Apache 2.x with any of the many J2EE App Servers (Tomcat, Geronimo, etc...) an Windows without any problems. From reading the mongrel web-site I

puppet way of handling rdist and triggers
We have an existing "management system" of sorts, based on rdist. I''d like to know the best way to migrate it to using puppet. Currently, we have a local binaries tree, rdisted out nightly. We also make use of rdist''s extra capability to trigger scripts when and if named files are updated. I''m not sure what the best method would be, of converting this to

Overriding default DELETE behavior with logical deletes
Hello! I am trying to figure out how to implement *logical deletes* instead of physical deletes using ActiveRecord. Basically, in many applications that deal with E-Commerce, you really can''t physically delete almost anything, because records must be kept for auditing and customer service tracking purposes. In the past, I''ve implemented logical deletes as follows: 1.

Do i need multiple mongrel instances for good performance?
I have developed a rails application for my company. It will be used by upto 3o people at a time. I have just read that Mongrel will only process 1 request at a time (rails is only in 1 controller at a time). Does this mean that to get good performance i need to run mongrel many times on different ports? How many different instances of mongrel is recommended? If this is true then it

properly restarting mongrel instances
Hi folks. Using mongrel_rails and the mongrel_cluster capistrano recipes, I often encounter a situation where some of the mongrel processes don''t die in time to be restarted. The output of capistrano will tell me something like "mongrel on port 8001 is already up", but that''s only because capistrano/mongrel_rails failed to take it down in the first place. The solution

Distance and Aggregate Data - Again...
I appreciate the help I've been given so far. The issue I face is that the data I'm working with has 53000 rows, so in calculating distance, finding all recids that fall within 2km and summing the population, etc. - a) takes too long and b) have no sense of progress. Below is a loop that reads each recid one at a time, calculates the distance and identifies the recids that fall within 2

Rails Deployment Book
I''ve been mulling over an idea for a book covering Ruby on Rails application deployment. Obvious topics include using Mongrel by itself and with Apache/Lighttpd, load balancers, memcached, and Capistrano. What other topics would you like to see covered in such a book? Cheers, -- Dave Murphy (Schwuk) http://schwuk.com

Setup with Apache 2.2 proxy balancer : timeout during uploads
Hi all, I encounter timeout errors during file uploads in my Rails application. I think the problem may be in the Mongrel configuration. Here is my setup: * Load balancer (Cisco CSM, my provider''s Catalyst 6509) * Apache 2.2.3 with mod_proxy_balancer * Mongrel 0.3.13.3 * Rails 1.1.6 * Ruby 1.8.4 * MySQL 5.0.22 * file_column I host an application in which users may upload medium files

How to improve this code?
Hi all, I've got some functioning code that I've literally taken hours to write. My 'R' coding is getting better...it used to take days :) I know I've done a poor job of optimizing the code. In addition, I'm missing an important step and don't know where to put it. So, three questions: 1) I'd like the resulting output to be sorted on distance (ascending) and

Two Mongrel''s Two Rails Applications
Hi, I have Mongrel up and running for one application (port 3000), but when I start another Mongrel for a second application (port 4000) I can access both sites locally (using curl) but not remotly via a browser. If I stop the first applications Mongrel and start the second the second one works. In other words I can only run one application at once... I have both on different ports, it makes

ssh-agent and rdist
Hi, I'm having a real difficulty here, and I'll keep this very short; ask for needed details. I've got two nearly identically configured RedHat 8 systems, call them A and B. I've generated keys with passphrases on both, added the public key for B to ~/.ssh/authorized_hosts on A and vice versa. On either machine, I can use ssh-agent with no problems. In particular, if I run

Rsync and rdist-like specials
Greetings, We manage a large farm of systems and push changes, patches, new software, etc. out to our clients using kerberized rdist. It's clunky and slow but it's got the magic of specials. Using a special one can tell rdist that if a particular file changes, preform this command. So, if we make a change to httpd.conf, we can tell rsync to bounce httpd. If httpd.conf hasn't change,

Mongrel 1.0 RC1 Full Win32 Build
Hello Minions! It''s *finally* here. Mongrel 1.0 RC1 for everyone to test, even the win32 folks. I managed to get everything to build on windows, including fastthread, and even cleaned up the "releases source":http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/releases/ so that it should install cleaner. Win32 will have to try and report problems, as it seems rubygems is real finicky on win32.

openssh-2.3.0p1, Krb5 and rdist
Krb5-authentication and Kerb5-TGT-passing is working well with openssh-2.3.0p1. Question: Is there a solution using rdist -P "/usr/local/bin/ssh" without the need for RhostRSAAuthentication, RSAAuthentication or using the Kerberos r-command set? The objective is to do away with ".rhosts/.shost" and private-key authentication when Kerberos authentication is already in
