video chapters and subtitles in ogg containers
Hi Hans, At the moment, Ogg supports two text codecs, CMML and Kate. Both of them are theoretically capable of doing what you want with chapters and subtitles. The biggest problem is player support. There is CMML and kate support in vlc, and kate in mplayer though I am not sure how it is displayed on-screen. Subtitles may display, but chapter markers, I am not so sure about. I assume the

Fwd: [whatwg] Cue points in media elements
Hi, this is an email from the HTML5 standardisation group, which I thought would be very interesting to Annodex and Xiph people. I do not know enough about the cue points that he is talking about to know how much should be done in html/javascript and how much directly in the media. But I found the need for cue points interesting. Maybe someone here has an answer to Brian on how it could work or

video chapters and subtitles in ogg containers
I'm trying to create files that contain a video stream, one or more audio streams, subtitles, and DVD-like chapter information. ATM, I use ogm containers that can handle all this. But although ogm is supported e.g. by xine (including chapters), it seems to be an unofficial hack. Is that correct? I'd like to move to ogg containers, since ogm doesn't support theora videos. using Kate for WebVTT encapsulation
(sending this publicly so the discussion about this is in the open) Hi OggK, all, OggK, you've probably seen that the bug in Firefox for adding Kate support has been closed as WONTFIX: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481529 I've just posted a reply there mentioning how I envisage in-band WebVTT support to be provided through Kate. I want to ask your opinion. In case you

[fdo] Accessibility list at Freedesktop.org
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi! I have been in discussion with several other accessibility projects to work on a common API for speech synthesis and speech recognition drivers. I suggested to discuss this on a mailing list and to found a new list at freedesktop.org for this purpose. Since there are also a number of other accessibility related areas where cooperation is

Should Join Discussion - Fwd: [whatwg] Give guidance about RFC 4281 codecs parameter
Hello, You guys might want to join this discussion. (And maybe some others too.) On the WhatWG mailing list, there's been a fury of e-mails about adding a <video> element to HTML5. They're talking about codecs and containers now. It might be helpful to have your representatives there. And help shape things. See ya ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dave Singer

Chris DiBona's passing comment on Theora + Youtube on the WhatWG list
Chris DiBona made an odd comment regarding Theora on the WhatWG list. I am explicitly not calling for people to go sign up over there and complain. Google has done many good things for open video, and I'm sure they will continue to do so in the future. I thought the comparison I did for my response would be interesting to other people here:

Using sub to get captions in barplots
All, I've been using "sub" (subtitle) instead of "main" such that captions are below figures produced by xyplot. This works fine and captions are on a single line. However, when I try this for bar plots with error bars (altering the error.bars function form Crawley's The R Book, see below), the captions are split on more than 1 line. Is there a way to get the

Icecast + theora stream + Firefox 3.1a2 = promising
Hi folks, just wanted to let you in on my research into use of theora streams in <video> tags. The current alpha 2 of Firefox 3.1 supports <video> tags [1] and ogg encapsulated theora + vorbis . Static files delivered by a webserver work just fine if they come in fast enough. But of course my interest is not in static files but in streams. So I hacked together a small html-test
