Analogue artifact estimation
Hi List, Just batting a few ideas around here, but would it be possible to include in to the codec, estimation for common video artifacts that occur in the analogue world? For example, anything that's gone through a composite stage will likely have dot-crawl and false colour - if we can recognise this effect in the encoder, we can treat it as a special case. Other artifacts that come to

Current state of theora & Windows port?
Hello everyone, I'm developing software for a marketing company which creates multimedia presentations. We're currently using proprietary Windows software, but are looking for a royalty-free cross-platform solution. It's important that the solution is royalty- and patent-free because the presentations are copied and given out in large quantities for free (as in beer ;-) We are

expected bitrates ?
Fo HDTV sized 422 originals, what kind of bitrates can one expect theora to hit at reasonable quality? Or put another way, what compression ratios can one expect from uncompressed to theora given a target of no significant artifacts, and what kind of peak bitrates would the i/o system require to keep up with the decoder? -JimC --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg

Encoding paramaters...
I've got my encoder working now... and i put a proeprty page interface to allow the user to set a few encoding paramters to start off with... but changing the paramters doesn't seem to make barely any difference... These are the defaults i'm using... mTheoraInfo.target_bitrate=400000; mTheoraInfo.quality=30; mTheoraInfo.dropframes_p=0; mTheoraInfo.quick_p=1;

Encoding from fifo's
Hello, I'm new to the list, so if this is an FAQ, please point me to the relevant docs. I'm playing with Theora, to see what kind of quality I can expect (I realise its not for production use yet). I've download the source from CVS, and got it to build, with the example encoder and player. While trying to find something to serve as a good source of input, I decided I'd use a

resolution issues
just added to the WIKI: * Ideas with some concensus after discussion on IRC, it was provisionally agreed (by those present at the time) that Theora should support arbitrary pixel sizes (presently it is limited to multiples of 16 both horizontally and vertically). It is felt that this can be achieved with minimal pain by adding four values to the page header, immediately following the present

A comparison of VP3, and two MPEG-4 variants
a couple points before I look at this too hard: "For VP3, since you can't do a constant quality encode" what? that should not be the case. Could be a QT-specific bug. Theora at any rate is certainly capable of doing constant-quality encode. This probably explains your standard deviation complaint -- VP3 is running a rate control alg, where the other codecs are just shooting for

newest cvs and mplayer
Hi The newest cvs let's mplayer segfault: ... Opening video decoder: [theora] Theora/VP3 Segmentation fault I don't get any infos more :( A gdb backtrace don't work. (mplayer is compile with --enable-debug=3) When will the encoder_example implemented in mencoder ??? Would be nice because the yuv-data is soooo big on the HD ;) Jens --- >8 ---- List archives:

Legalese. What is stride?
Hello all. I've been playing around with theora since it first entered CVS, and I like what I'm seeing. Today I've been fixing xine's theoraplugin to understand theora_info.frame_{width,height} and theora_info.offset_{x,y}. I only got it working after some experimenting and basically copying the code from player_example. A few questions related to this: 1. What are the legal

Using Theora Micro-HOWTO
Okay, thanks to some stubbornness on my part and helpfulness on the part of people on this mailing list, I got the Ogg Theora alpha compiled up and installed and running. Yesterday, I went to the Prelinger archives (the public-domain video archive at www.archive.com) to find a high-quality original to re-encode as a test. The encoder worked just fine, and playback as well, and I thought I'd

Ogv file only plays in VLC / Can't be used by most tools.
Hi, I'm new here - thanks for having me. (Sorry if I'm in the wrong place or a noob.) I downloaded the Theora encoder sample (ver 1.1.1), modified it to encode a sequence of bitmaps, and created an OGV file. The OGV file plays fine in the latest VLC (1.0.5), but I can't do much else with it: I tried uploading to YouTube, and the video just comes out really corrupt:

Independent implementations?
Hullo, When people ask me what Vorbis's license terms are, I usually tell them that the bitstream format is in the public domain, that the reference libraries are licensed under a BSD-like license, and that the example programs are licensed under the GNU GPL. (Note the distinction between filespec and implementation here.) Meanwhile, Theora.org's FAQ doesn't say anything about the

VP3 Patch For xine
Hi, Since a number of people are eager to try out the native VP3 decoder in xine, I have made a patch available, bz2-compressed: http://www.pcisys.net/~melanson/codecs/xine-vp3-decoder-patch.bz2 To work with this patch: 1) Get the latest xine-lib from CVS. Visit this page for more details: http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=9655 The module name is xine-lib, but you will also need

Proof of Concept
Hi, So it took a little while to get here but VP3 through ffmpeg is finally starting to achieve viewable results. It partially works right now. Keyframes only. And monochrome. Oh, and the picture is upside down (something I did not realize about VP3 until I let it fly just now). Anyway, here is a picture of ffmpeg's VP3 decoder in action using xine:

libavcodec vp3 / theora decoder speedup
The vp3 / theora decoder in FFmpeg project received a major speedup: http://multimedia.cx/eggs/profiling-and-optimizing-theora/#comment-150751 http://git.ffmpeg.org/?p=ffmpeg;a=commit;h=6e8061980c9a18a0eb9802f5dc5becc349066680 http://git.ffmpeg.org/?p=ffmpeg;a=commit;h=8476744ba50d26a3e188def192cd9086b0f781d7 http://git.ffmpeg.org/?p=ffmpeg;a=commit;h=a51faef9b61bd80499a28322802ef4b22be44d43

Changing video quality during encoding
I don't know how to change a video quality on the fly - I want to provide a slider with a preview window, so user could see the result immediately in this window. I tried to send ICM_COMPRESS_FRAMES_INFO to encoder or calling ICSetState() - with no success however. Am I doing something wrong ? How can I set 'lDataRate', 'dwRate', 'dwScale' parameters ? I tried every

theora spec
can anyone confirm that, unlike VP3, Theora in fact decodes images right-side-up? (VP3 managed to turn everything upside down on encode and reverse it on decode) The tests I'm doing indicate that Theora doesn't reverse the image -- the first coefficients encoded correspond to the upper-left corner of the frame. ___ Dan Miller (++,) Founder, On2 Technologies --- >8 ---- List

Question about converting VP3 to Ogg Theora
As I understand it the current plan is to make it possible to losslessly transcode VP3 video to Theora video. In my experience, one of the "features" of VP3 is it drops frames in the event that there is little/no movement in a frame, or if "drop frames" is enabled, to drop frames if the data rate is getting too high. I understand that the way that VP3 does this in

On2 VP3 codec for Intel macs
Hi all, It's been a few years since I encoded a number of movies using the VP3 codec (v3.2) on my Quicksilver PPC. Now I have a new Intel mac and I'd like to play them. However, it seems that the codec offered on On2's website is only for the PPC architecture. Does anyone know a workaround or some other codec that works on the MacIntel platform? I'm using Quicktime Pro 7.

VP3 question
I get exceptionally bad image quality when I try to encode an (uncompressed) AVI into a VP3 AVI (actually I get this output no matter what format the source). Please see this for a brief description of the problem: http://InspiredCode.com/VP3problem.htm What is wrong and what do I need to do? Thanks! Robison
