DV format patent status
Hi folks,
I was curious what's known about the patent situation with the DV
format. Google turns up a number of press articles describing it as an
"open standard with no associated licensing fees" but also, for example,
US Patent number 5,691,81 which, while I've not done a careful
comparison of the claims, sounds like it covers the block-rearrangement
scheme that's the

Kernel panic while compiling kernel
I know you Xen developers are beginning to hate me ;) but...
While trying to compile 2.4.24 under DOM0, quickly after issuing ''make dep'' I
got:
Kernel panic: Failed mmu update: c015bf80, 4
I suspect this address probably isn''t to helpful but this is all I have. I am
currently booted in 2.4.21-SuSE and compiling the 2.4.24 regarding another

halt and/or reboot init scripts?
Hello,
It seems that halt (reboot also) init script from SuSE 9.0 is not working with
Xen. Has anyone stumbled onto such problem, disregarding the actual
distribution, and found a working init script?

Advice on small office UPS
Hello Folks,
I have a couple of questions - one about a basic UPS choice I am to
make for a small UK office environment and the second about NUT
Windows support. For the UPS, I have 2 or 3 servers, a phone system
and a switch i.e. a basic :
- Dell R410 1U (2x IEC)
- Dell SC1425 1U (1x IEC)
- Mitel 3300 CXi phone system (1x IEC)
- Netgear GS748T switch (1x IEC)
It would be good to also be able

What is the timeframe for the L2 switching to be incorporated into the Xen

Being strict on differentiating between IEC prefixes and SI prefixes.
One of the greatest things about rails is that it is so standards-compliant,
no other framework that I have seen have complied to the
HTTP standard (think REST) in such a degree that Rails does. Kudos to
you all for that.
I think we (Rails community) should follow the line of standards
compliance and also
take it to the binary prefixes [1], i.e. kilobytes, megabytes,
etc. For more than half a

Thusnelda Video Quality
Wow.
Let me say that again, just in case you missed it.
Wow.
The quality looks to be on par with what I get out of H.264, but
Theora has the added benefit of free and open source software with no
patent worries so I can use it with a clean conscience. Thanks,
everyone.

[LLVMdev] Fixed-point arithmetic
Hi all,
Is there any ongoing work in LLVM/Clang to support fixed-point
arithmetic as described in ISO/IEC TR 18037 ?
It seems that gcc has support for it since 2007 and it would be useful
for us to add such support.
Just to get an idea if we decide to work on this, how long would it take
to get it implemented ?
Regards,
Ivan

Users are sometimes surprised by the value returned, for example why
(-8)^(1/3) is NaN. For double inputs, R makes use of IEC 60559

I'm a bit confused by this concept. I'm aware of the archaic meaning of the word byte, but it has meant 8 bits for the last 30 years. There's even an ISO/IEC standard.
I know of architectures like Texas' C55x DSPs that address 16 bits at a time, but even their

video source
In order to experiment with the theora encoder, I bought a mini-DV camcorder a
couple of weeks ago; a Panasonic PV-GS9 for $250. I wanted a mini-DV because
it is claimed that capturing video from the camcorder to a computer over a
firewire cable results in an exact copy of the recorded video.
That was not my experience. The video I captured to my computer over the
firewire cable, using both

Theora patent question
Does the reason Theora is relatively safe from patent infringement
lawsuit have more to do with it actually not being encumbered, or is
it because its use is decentralized?
For example, FreeType is not patent-free, nor is Linux, yet they
succeed because on the one hand, they are open source, and those who
maintain them do not guarantee anything regarding patents, it is up to
each individual user

Strange behaviour with BLF-CRYPT and SHA*-CRYPT pasword schemas

this is less of a bug report or a help request, but we would like to know if
someone can explain the following:

default_pass_scheme = BLF-CRYPT
password hash in database : BLF-CRYPT

default_pass_scheme = SHA512 or SHA256-CRYPT

G.729 patent in France
Hi all,
I am building an Asterisk PBX with voicemail and music on hold functions.
An ISDN BRI line will also be available and G.729 IP-phones will be used.
Are there patents rights applicable to France?
Which licence could I use and how many ones are required (only one per phone
or also for voicemail and MOH)?

patent issues with Vorbis
Hi,
We are in the business of developing/productizing Multimedia codecs for embedded systems. Recently, Vorbis has gained good popularity. We are also developing it.
But we face few problems related to patents. Vorbis claims to be patent free. Is there any particular search made for possible patent infringements and corresponding report published? We need to convince our customers sometime
