building under NetBSD
I am successfully able to build today's theora_cvs_snapshot under NetBSD/i386 1.6 with SDL disabled. (I haven't tested yet.) I was unable to build with SDL: player_example.c:52: sys/soundcard.h: No such file or directory I see the source says it is OSS-specific for now. This is what I did to make it build: --- work.rainier/theora/examples/player_example.c.orig Mon May 19 12:31:37

Encoding from fifo's
Hello, I'm new to the list, so if this is an FAQ, please point me to the relevant docs. I'm playing with Theora, to see what kind of quality I can expect (I realise its not for production use yet). I've download the source from CVS, and got it to build, with the example encoder and player. While trying to find something to serve as a good source of input, I decided I'd use a

It's quiet. TOO quiet.
Whatever became of Ogg Theora? There seems to be still almost no news from Xiph or its developers regarding Ogg Theora. None at all since Mid-December, when the release of Alpha 2 was pushed back to a month ago... No news on plans for the second Alpha? No news of development "roadmaps"? No news on current developments or challenges that are stalling development? No CVS updates

"encoder_example" segfaulting...(and a couple of other questions)
I picked up the imported Feb 2005 issue of "Linux Format", in part for the Theora article...and I was pleasantly surprised to see my mouldering old "Ogg-Theora Micro-howto[1]" document referenced. I figured that meant people might still be finding it useful, so I felt it was time to dust it off and update it. I also noticed that archive.org now has a small but growing

Using Theora Micro-HOWTO
Okay, thanks to some stubbornness on my part and helpfulness on the part of people on this mailing list, I got the Ogg Theora alpha compiled up and installed and running. Yesterday, I went to the Prelinger archives (the public-domain video archive at www.archive.com) to find a high-quality original to re-encode as a test. The encoder worked just fine, and playback as well, and I thought I'd

theora test suite
some of you may find this helpful: I've uploaded a short (5 second) raw clip in yuv4mpeg format, associated audio, and batch files to exercise the encoder & decoder examples. In addition I've included the file as compressed (test.ogg), and a longer version as well to test playback sync. Notes: to use MPlayer with the -vo yuv4mpeg option, you need to get the latest release and compile

Compiling CVS? (automake/autoconf problem with autogen.sh?)
I've eagerly grabbed the current CVS as of a few minutes ago, and attempted to build and play with theora, but am running into a snag with the autogen.sh script: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ bash-2.05# ./autogen.sh I am going to run ./configure with no arguments - if you wish to pass any to it, please specify them on the ./autogen.sh command line.

Dovecot impatient with mysql?
Oh, that time is an exponential backoff on mysql not responding. So where is the time dovecot waits before backing off configured? It seems dovecot is impatient with connecting with mysql, as I see in maillog entries like: Apr 6 11:48:30 z9m9z dovecot: dict: Error: mysql(localhost): Connect failed to database (postfix): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (13) - waiting for 5 seconds before retry Apr 6 11:48:35 z9m9z dovecot: dict: Error: mysql(localhost): Connect

ADS mode - differences between W2K and 2003?
I'm having a bizarre problem doing authentication via winbind against a Windows 2003 server. Aside from changing the hostname information, etc. as appropriate for krb5.conf and smb.conf, the configuration I'm using is one that I copied from another server that is successfully authenticating against ads. The two systems I'm having trouble with are running Suse Linux Enterprise

How to remove white spaces
All, I am storing a string of email addresses in a table and when I retrieve them using a RODBC statement such as: test = sqlQuery(xf, "select specialist from roger_sector_specialist")$specialist 'test' is of mode list and includes a bunch of white space. As a work-around I convert 'test' to a character string, split it based on a white space, then take the first

New addition to FAQ
Greetings, I was on IRC about 7 hours ago and suggested that the FAQ be updated slightly. Rather than sit on my ass and complain I figured I'd ask a few people, and see if the idea was worth the time. Here's what Ive started with: http://www.dimension.net.nz/theora.html I'll be adding to it over the next 24 hours - mostly in the area of Playback and Encoding. Just threw it together

Newbie seeks helps ordering ancestors from acts_as_tree
I''m sure this is really obvious but I''m feeling my way here with rails (and Ruby) and have tried a couple of things without success. So, can anyone tell me the best way to reverse order the retuen list of ancestors. In the controller I have: @ancestors = @category.ancestors which returns an array starting at the parent and ending with the root. When I then loop through the
