Current state of theora & Windows port?
Hello everyone,
I'm developing software for a marketing company which creates multimedia
presentations. We're currently using proprietary Windows software, but
are looking for a royalty-free cross-platform solution. It's important
that the solution is royalty- and patent-free because the presentations
are copied and given out in large quantities for free (as in beer ;-)
We are

Hardware donation - 7600 GS (AGP)
Are there any Nouveau developers in Europe (preferably in the UK) who
would like a GeForce 7600 GS? It's the AGP version and is no longer
useful to me. I've got the power dongle (it requires a 350W power
supply) and a S-Video to composite dongle.
Specs:
BFG GeForce 7600 GS OC (AGP)
512MB RAM
DVI + VGA
1 x power dongle (the sort that plug into pata drives)
1 x "HDTV" dongle

Quality of vp3.2 codec?
How good is the video compression in vp3.2?
For example, how does it compare (bit rate & quality) to mpeg1, mpeg2,
Divx, real Video 8+, Windows Media, etc. etc.
It being open source is nice and all, but if it can't be reasonably
competitive then there isn't much point to it.
I just haven't seen anything that compares vp32 to anything else.
(Although to be honest, I haven't

Blockiness
I tried out Theora to see what the future holds, and see some pros and cons.
As a great plus, I have noticed that, even at the lowest quality (ie. "-v 0"),
the detail, and overally quality is clearly better than anything else available.
On the negative side, at qualities comparable to MPEG4, I've notcied a great
deal of blockiness. It's not as bad as blockiness from other

mixed interlaced content and ffmpeg2theora
dv file from minidv camera - interlaced.
small dv created by imported jpeg images - not interlaced.
seems that when I use ffmpeg2theora with deinterlace switch and reduce
size, it works. But when the only reduction I am doing is to width
(720x480 -> 640x480) the encoder ignores the naturally interlaced bit
and uses the last de-interlaced frame.
Since the small bit made from jpegs is a dv

Why so many lossless formats?
Hi folks,
I'm trying to get a handle on the many lossless audio formats from the
perspective of a software developer. I love the FLAC format because it is open
source and it performs very well. But there is also the MLP (Meridian
Lossless Packing), AAC (Apple Lossless), and probably some Microsoft format(s)
that compete in the same feature set. These formats all achieve

question about network setting for domain1
Hi,all,
I cannot get my network in domain1 work. Here is my configuration:
in dom0:
I have two network cards, the ip addrs are 141.213.10.110 and 192.168.0.4,
respectively. 141.213.10.110 is an external IP and can access internet
directly. The gateway should be 141.213.10.1.
/etc/xen/vfp: the domain1 configuration file, I created domain1 using ''xm

Theora file size
Hi
I was surprised with size of Theora files and thought
of feedback.
Following 1minute duration Theora and Xvid files were
made from a y4m file. The resolution is 1280x720:
1. Xvid 17MB
2. Ogg/Theora Q7 31MB
3. Ogg/Theora Q8 38MB
4. Ogg/Theora Q9 49MB
5. Ogg/Theora Q10 61MB
The Xvid file was made using mencoder by 2 passes with

Changing video quality during encoding
I don't know how to change a video quality on the fly - I want to provide a slider with a preview window, so user could see the result immediately in this window. I tried to send ICM_COMPRESS_FRAMES_INFO to encoder or calling ICSetState() - with no success however. Am I doing something wrong ? How can I set 'lDataRate', 'dwRate', 'dwScale' parameters ? I tried every

Theora vs. Nullsoft NSV
How does the Theora project differ from Nullsofts NSV project?
Other than the obvious fact they use mp3....

Independent implementations?
Hullo,
When people ask me what Vorbis's license terms are, I usually tell
them that the bitstream format is in the public domain, that the
reference libraries are licensed under a BSD-like license, and that
the example programs are licensed under the GNU GPL. (Note the
distinction between filespec and implementation here.)
Meanwhile, Theora.org's FAQ doesn't say anything about the

New experimental theora implementation
Derf's from-scratch alternate implementation of the theora codec is now
publicly available from our subversion repository.
http://svn.xiph.org/experimental/derf/theora-exp/
This exciting new codebase promises superiour performance, and the encoder
is capable of higher quality output than the current represenation, taking
advantage of the bitstream extension we've added to the

Memory oversubscription
Hi. First of all, thanks for Xen. It''s terrific!
I''m interested in doing memory oversubscription and am wondering if Xen
can do this (now or in the future).
For example, on a machine with 100MB available physical memory, can I:
1. Create a domain with a 90MB allocation
2. Inflate a balloon in that domain and return say 40MB back to Xen
I know there are mechanisms for doing

VP3 Patch For xine
Hi,
Since a number of people are eager to try out the native VP3
decoder in xine, I have made a patch available, bz2-compressed:
http://www.pcisys.net/~melanson/codecs/xine-vp3-decoder-patch.bz2
To work with this patch:
1) Get the latest xine-lib from CVS. Visit this page for more details:

The module name is xine-lib, but you will also need

I'm trying to boot bartpe from gpxelinux
I'm using gpxelinux and memdisk.
my pxelinux.cfg/default looks as follows

Both of these I think I have working correctly. So my question I guess
is for people that may have done this?
Anyways I see the bartpe load screen then the xp load screen and then

Proof of Concept
Hi,
So it took a little while to get here but VP3 through ffmpeg is
finally starting to achieve viewable results. It partially works right
now. Keyframes only. And monochrome. Oh, and the picture is upside down
(something I did not realize about VP3 until I let it fly just now).
Anyway, here is a picture of ffmpeg's VP3 decoder in action using xine:

theora spec
can anyone confirm that, unlike VP3, Theora in fact decodes images right-side-up? (VP3 managed to turn everything upside down on encode and reverse it on decode)
The tests I'm doing indicate that Theora doesn't reverse the image -- the first coefficients encoded correspond to the upper-left corner of the frame.
