Macroblock Coding Issues
Hi, So I have almost completed a new VP3 decoder implementation. In the course of doing so, I have encountered something odd about macroblock coding. As a quick overview, VP3 has a notion of fragments (8x8 pixels) and superblocks (32x32 pixels, 4x4 fragments). These apply to each individual plane (e.g., a 64x64 video will have 4 Y superblocks and 1+1 C superblocks, 64 Y fragments

Current state of theora & Windows port?
Hello everyone, I'm developing software for a marketing company which creates multimedia presentations. We're currently using proprietary Windows software, but are looking for a royalty-free cross-platform solution. It's important that the solution is royalty- and patent-free because the presentations are copied and given out in large quantities for free (as in beer ;-) We are

[OT] Just saying hi!
I hope this list is small enough for not beeing banned when introducing oneself. So... Hi, I just subscribed to the theora-lists. I'm from the XVID project, so I know a deal about video and MPEG-4 in particular, but nothing about Vorbis/Theora etc., That's why I'm here, because I'm interested in patent-free alternatives. I guess there is no documentation of the current status

question on theora encoding
Hello there, I'm a university student and our professor assigned us as a project to build a theora encoder/decoder. I need some help on some info that I didn't manage to find in Theora's reference. I am building a function that calculates motion estimation. When making motion estimations must I scan each and every macroblock in coded order? After that the motion vectors should be

VP3 In ffmpeg
Hi, Sorry for taking so long with this, but I finally committed a first pass of my own VP3 decoder to the ffmpeg codebase. You can browse the source here: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/ffmpeg/ffmpeg/libavcodec/ vp3.c and vp3data.h are the files in question. Attached is a message I sent to the ffmpeg-devel list about the new decoder and its present shortcomings.

VP3 Format Doc, v0.4
Hi, Check it out-- another update in the space of a week: http://home.pcisys.net/~melanson/codecs/vp3-format.txt v0.4: March 2, 2004 - renamed and expanded section "Initializing The Quantization Matrices" - outlined section "Reconstructing The Frame" - moved Theora Differences Appendix to its own section entitled "Theora Specification" - added Appendix:

Theora and software patents
The list probably did not get this reply from D Richard Felker III. Having read quite a few patents I tend to agree with Richard: Software patents are very broad and even if I have not read the source code of Theora I would be surprised if it did not infringe several patents. However, I believe the argument that On2 has not been sued for infringing the MPEG-patents is a very strong argument.

Postscript resolution
Hi all I have some plots that I wish to write out to postcript files. I open the postscript device as suggested [postscript(file="foo.eps",...)], run my plotting commands, and close the device as suggested [dev.off()]. However, when I open the eps files in a postscript viewer such as the gimp, the resolution of the postscript images is *really* bad, very "blocky" and

Theora file size
Hi I was surprised with size of Theora files and thought of feedback. Following 1minute duration Theora and Xvid files were made from a y4m file. The resolution is 1280x720: 1. Xvid 17MB 2. Ogg/Theora Q7 31MB 3. Ogg/Theora Q8 38MB 4. Ogg/Theora Q9 49MB 5. Ogg/Theora Q10 61MB The Xvid file was made using mencoder by 2 passes with following options:

VP3 IDCT
Hi, Is there anything special I need to know about VP3's IDCT? I mean besides the fact that there are separate IDCTs to handle sparse coefficient matrices. Are the IDCT functions mathematically equivalent to any textbook IDCT functions? Thanks... -- -Mike Melanson --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To

Updated VP3 Document
Hi, I have been on a documentation kick recently. I finally updated my VP3 format document tonight: http://www.pcisys.net/~melanson/codecs/vp3-format.txt v0.2: October 9, 2003 - expanded section "Reversing the DC Prediction" - added Appendix B: Theora Differences Feel free to look it over and point out any glaring mistakes. I can't wait to see how much sense it makes to

[PATCH] nv50: enable H.264 for NV98+ (VP3, VP4.0)
Create the ref_bo without any storage type flags set for now. This can probably be split up somehow later on, but this seems to work. Signed-off-by: Ilia Mirkin <imirkin at alum.mit.edu> Cc: "10.0" <mesa-stable at lists.freedesktop.org> --- Would be great if someone could see if this also makes MPEG4 work on NVA3+. In order to do that, remove the if (chipset < 0xc0)

[PATCH 1/3] nv50: enable h264 and mpeg4 for nv98+ (vp3, vp4.0)
Create the ref_bo without any storage type flags set for now. The issue probably arises from our use of the additional buffer space at the end of the ref_bo. It should probably be split up in the future. dead DCSearchPoints code
Dan, In reviewing the code, derf came across the DCSearchPoints array in QuadCodeDisplayFragments(), encode.c:696. It looks like it specifies a search order for nearby coded fragments for prediction if there isn't a nearest neighbor. However, the upper search bound is defined as *0*, so the search loop (line 917) is never executed and it always falls back to the last coded fragment.

Review of Mpeg-4 & on2's vp3...
The site: http://www.techimo.com/articles/index.pl?photo=33&SID=12&tag=SNnb323 has a review & comparison of several mpeg-4 codecs, and they also include vp3. (Be warned, it's a very big web page, due to all of the image examples!) Not really all that informative, but I thought somebody might be interested in hearing about it. *** On2 VP3 3.2.5.0 Positive: extreme low bitrate

Interlazed video posibilities
I don´t found any patent around this but i ned help with the patents. I can´t found all patents for interlazed video and I only read the patents around MPEG , the optimization for field based video can be aplied without problem, this is compatible whih the progresive encoding and in a few scenarios they can be positive. <p>process: <p>common: -2 bits to indicate video type 0x

blocky issue here with libtheora 1.1 20090806 (Thusnelda)
this sample is very blocky, the older version seems to do much better and less blocky video. i'm not sure if my 1.9ghz 1 gb ram is the problem here or the encoder has hicups on this new libtheora 1.1 20090806 (Thusnelda). please advice how to fix this or should i use the older version. this encode was 2 pass with horrible output. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NDGY0EAL General ID
