apt-cacher for CentOS
Hi All,
Is there something similar to apt-cacher available for CentOS? I would
like to ensure that an application is only downloaded once to the
network and not hundreds of times.
If there isn't an equivalent, would someone please point me in the
direction of how I might accomplish this with CentOS?

nscd problem
Hi All,
I just enabled nscd to see if I can speed up some operations on our
large NFS/NIS environment, however, now that I've enabled nscd I am no
longer able to sudo. Can someone please point me in the right
direction? Everything was working fine prior to enabling it.

OT: Scripting with sudo password
Completely off topic, but I'm sure someone out there is using scripts
that require a sudo password of some sort, so I'll ask.
What are people doing to automate tasks that required sudo passwords in
order to run? sudo without a password is not an option for me, but I
would like to be able to enter the password once have it saved and then
read back when sudo is required.

Slightly OT: Dual-booting two Linux dists
I'd like to set up a machine to dual-boot Ubuntu and CentOS5. Any
problems foreseen with this? I'm mostly worried about disk labeling;
they each need their own /boot and / filesystems.
(Or do they need separate /boot partitions? Obviously there's an
issue with boot.* and *.b and what System.map is symlink'd to, etc.,
but maybe there's a way to work around that.)

5.x install - loses display when launching anaconda
Hi all,
Trying to install 5.0 or 5.1 (i386 or x86_64) on a new system from an
install DVD. As soon as the installer launches anaconda, the screen
shuts off and from this point I'm unable to switch to any other tty.
This is an Intel core2duo machine on an Intel P35 chipset motherboard,

Any ideas what could cause

rate limiting question between two hosts
If I need to rate limit file transfers between to machines, what can I
do at the host-level within CentOS, and what might I need to "yum
install" in order to do?
(For example, say I would like to rsync something, and then I would
like to make sure that I don't exceed, say, 10 Mbs.)

CD emulation (a la daemontools)
I was wondering if anyone was aware of a method for mounting virtual CD
devices with CD image files. I keep images (.CUE/.BIN pairs) of my CD
collection on a NAS appliance tucked away in my closet. I'd like to
write a script to mount each one, create ID tags, rip the tracks, then
move along to the next one. I figure with a quad core opteron, it
should be able to crank through them in a

Having just upgraded my system from CentOS 4.4 to 5.0, I'm a bit
disappointed that I still can't install skype from the skype repo using

CentOS-5 - Suffering from LDAP experimentation
I was playing aeound with the GUI authentication configuration and was
called away from my desk after I had configured the LDAP DC entries but
before I had tried to start the ldap server or do much of anything else.
When I returned the terminal session was screen-saver locked and entering
my user password did not make it respond. I kept getting a time-out error.
Rebooting took forever and was

Target websites:
www.connecttech.com

I can usually get some kind of response, but if the content (download

hangs...
When I fire-up wireshark, I get a lot of ougoing highlighted Checksum

anyone using DBMail?
I am currently using Cyrus IMAPd, and been using it for a long time, the
main reason being that I want an IMAP server with nice server-side
filtering, which Cyrus provides via Sieve. Given that Sieve is
integrated with Squirrelmail, all is good.
Or is it?
Cyrus IMAPd is powerful, but it's a complete mess to upgrade, either
when upgrading the software per se, or when upgrading the whole

Hi all, we're trying to install CentOS 5.1 on a Sun Ultra 40. This is
an AMD-powered machine and we're using the x86_64 version of CentOS
5.1. The machine is using the NVidia CK804 chipset and has SATA disks.
It also has 16GB's of memory which prompted us to upgrade the BIOS on
the machine from 1.1 to 1.6 per this (we also have the two quadro
cards):
