Problem building R with Sun Studio Compiler on SLES 9 SP3
In a previous thread I had problems on openSuse 10.2 building R with optimisation and discovered that if I wanted
optimisation I need to turn on
-fstore -fsimple1 (the first is to force storage on some Fortran routines , the second is to ensure IEEE arithmetic,
with some optimisation).
That worked for my desktop. The real problem is to work on our servers (Opterons running SLES9SP3)
Make works

reading heterogeneous CSV
Greetings, all.
I've got a datafile I've been working with that has an ideosyncratic,
heterogeneous format. It's grossly like:
[...]
DISKREAD,metadata about disks
MEM,metadata about memory
ZZZZ,observation-identifier,time,date
DISKREAD,observation-identifier,data about disks
MEM,observation-identifier,data about memory
[ and repeat for each observation ]

Named pipe connections and stdout
All,
I am trying to use a named pipe to steer R from an external application.
Following the examples in RNEWS 1:1, I have created a simple listener:
zz <- fifo("TESTFIFO", "r")
repeat
{
a <- readLines(zz)
if(length(a) != 0)
{
e <- try(eval(parse(text = a)))
if (inherits(e,

DRBD facts
Hi,
I can''t find a way to add a page on the wiki (i''m logged in but there
is no edit button on the facter recipes page), so here is a recipe for
DRBD. It has been tested on version 0.8.4. Can someone publish it on
the web site?
if FileTest.exists?("/proc/drbd")
result = {}

File.readlines("/proc/drbd").each do |l|

help to speed up loops in r
Hi
i am using a script which involves the following loop. It attempts to reduce a data frame(zz) of 95000 * 41 down to a data frame (averagedreplicates) of 95000 * 21 by averaging the replicate values as you can see in the script below. This script however is very slow (2days). Any suggestions to speed it up.
NB I have also tried using rowMeans rather than adding the 2 values and dividing by 2.

Minor inconsistencies in tools:::funAPI()
Hi all,
I've noticed some peculiarities in the tools:::funAPI output that
complicate its programmatic use a bit.
- Is it for remapped symbol names (with Rf_ or the Fortran
underscore), or for unmapped names (without Rf_ or the underscore)?
I see that the functions marked in WRE are almost all (except
Rf_installChar and Rf_installTrChar) unmapped. This makes a lot of
sense because some

Help with loops
Hi
I am trying to create a loop which averages replicates in my data.
The original data has many rows. and consists of 40 column zz[,2:41] plus row headings in zz[,1]
I am trying to average each set of values (i.e. zz[1,2:3] averaged and placed in average_value[1,2] and so on.
below is my script but it seems to be stuck in an endless loop
Any suggestions??
for (i in 1:length(average_value[,1])) {

I have a problem a comparison of two data from a vector. The comparison
yields FALSE but should be TRUE. I have checked for mode(), length() and

Modern Symbolic debugger for R programmes?
I think I am whistling in the wind, but is there a modern symbolic
debugger for R programmes?
I am working through some one else's code, thousands of lines, that
has the occasional bug in it, and a lot in my understanding of it.
I cannot make setBreakpoint or findLineNum work. I get "No source
refs found.". I am starting to loose my mind!
A debugger where I could set

seek() and gzfile() on 32-bit R2.12.0 in linux
I have installed both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of R2.12.0 (2010-06-15
r52300) on my Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit system. I observe the following behavior
when running the examples from base::connections. There appears to be a
problem with seek() on a .gz file when using a 32-bit installation of
R2.12.0, but the problem doesn't appear in the 64-bit installation. I
realize that seek() has been
