iPod Touch/iPhone VPNs with CentOS.
I am looking at options for VPN connections from iPhones and iPod
Touches to CentOS systems. We use OpenVPN for connections with
Windows, Mac OS X, and other Linux systems, but there don't
appear to be any OpenVPN clients for iPhones (presumably because
there are no tun/tap interfaces available yet).
My experiences getting IPsec running on CentOS systems with OpenVPN
have not been pretty.

Ignore files gone missing.
Is there a way to have rsync not treat files that have gone
missing (e.g. Maildir messages that have been removed) as errors
while indicating I/O errors and such?

(OT) OpenOffice.org calc chart strangeness.
I am attempting to create a simple line chart graphing three columns from a
soffice-calc spreadsheet. I expect it to take the leftmost column as the
X-Axis, plotting the others on the Y-Axis, but it always creates an X-Axis
of the row number in the columns, and the first column amongst the data.
I have tried this on OpenOffice.org 3.2.0, NeoOffice(R) 3.0.2 Patch 2,
iWork Pages, and Excel 12.2.4

Kickstart install surprise
I have to say that I was more that a bit surprised, if not to say dismayed
when I booted a system with CentOS 5 installed to test a kickstart CD in
interactive mode, took it to the custom partitioning screen, then rebooted
without saving anything only to come up with a grub prompt, and the disk's
partition table wiped. The ks.cfg file did say to wipe the disk when
installing, but I would

/etc/hosts missing localhost?
Is there any reason why /etc/hosts would be missing the line,
127.0.0.1 localhost?
I just spent an hour trying to figure out why I could not connect
to postgresql using ``psql -h ...'', finally figuring out that
the /etc/hosts file was the problem.

Terminal emulation scripting
I need to write a script that will contact a remote system using TELNET

Why is SCSI disabled in kvm on CentOS 5.8?
Looking at the SRPM kvm-83-249.el5.centos.5, and the SRPM for
qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.209.el6.src.rpm on CentOS 6.2, I see many
patches to remove SCSI support. The 5.2 kvm.spec file disables
scsi in the configure run.
Why has this been disabled? Many old OS's don't grok SATA, but
have had SCSI support for years.

KVM Setup for Win7 Pro on CentOS 5.x
Can somebody point me to a HowTO or other documentation describing the
tools available under the CentOS 5 KVM package to create and manage a

Intel Atom systems?
Any comments on CentOS 5 on Intel Atom CPUs?
I need to build a couple of inexpensive systems that will be used
primarily as gateway/firewall systems with OpenVPN, and need
recommendations in reliable hardware platforms. These will need
two NICs.

CentOS 6 kvm disk write performance
I have 2 similar servers. Since upgrading one from CentOS 5.5 to 6, disk
write performance in kvm guest VMs is much worse.
There are many, many posts about optimising kvm, many mentioning disk
performance in CentOS 5 vs 6. I've tried various changes to speed up
write performance, but northing's made a significant difference so far:
- Install virtio disk drivers in guest

LD_ASSUME_KERNEL library issues CentOS 5 x86_64
I'm trying to get the Syspro/Encore MRP software running on a new CentOS 5
x86_64 system which uses an ODBC package built with old glibc/errno
libraries.
I have this same software running on a Suse Linux Enterprise 9 SP3 system
using LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1, but when I try this on CentOS 5 it results in
many unidentified libraries including libc.so.6, librt... etc.
My guess is that there are

How does one allow non-root users to use X11 console logins,

documentation of snapshots
I am looking for documentation on handling snapshots. The main
tasks are:
1. Create a snapshot
2. Roll back a snapshot
3. Merge the snapshot into the base to start the cycle over.
Currently I've done steps 1 and 2 into a single qcow2 image.
I'm running a relatively old version of libvirtd on CentOS 5,
libvirt-0.8.2-29.el5_9.1.
Thanks.

kickstart ks.cfg file on USB devices
Is there an easy way to specify the proper device location for
the kickstart configuration file if it is on a USB flash or USB
floppy drive? Depending on the hard disk configuration they
might by /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, etc.
On SuSE'autoyast instalattions, the system searches all available
devices for an ``info'' configuration file. Does CentOS 5.x do

Looking at the documentation of the /etc/group file including
some google searches, it appears to me that, contrary to the man
pages for group, Linux systems generally do not put membership
user names for the user's primary group in the record for it in
the /etc/group file, only for secondary groups. FreeBSD seems to
do the same thing while SCO OpenServer has full entries for the

APIC error on Intel Atom CPU, CentOS 5.x
I am seeing ``APIC error on CPU3: 60(60)'' warnings from dmesg
periodically on a CentOS 5.4 box, kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.
The CPU is an Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330 @ 1.60GHz. I am not a
hardware type, and don't have a clue what this means.
This is occurring while an rsync-3.0.4 process is receiving data
