R-beta: a bug in the lm function ?
I ran a function called BoxCox, taken from the book by Venables and Ripley, for checking the need for power transformation. This function works fine using the version 0.50 of R, but gives an error message with version 0.60. The lm function in version 0.60 is different from that in version 0.50. Is there a bug in the new lm function? Kung-Sik Chan >

[LLVMdev] Problem Compiling llvm-gcc 4.2
>> Dear All, I have been trying for days but still cannot break this barrier. May I get your help? I have compiled llvm-2.1 successfully and make install. When I proceed with llvm-gcc-4.2-2.1, however, I keep getting linking error as attached. Some functions with totally different content conflict with each other in linking process. That is a Linux box (Debian, with 2.6.23-1

Problems with userPassword when it's base64 encoded
I'm switching from OpenLDAP to the newly released Fedora Directory Server (formely known as the Netscape Directory Server) as a LDAP backend for my Samba domain. I'm now faced with a problem regarding how Fedora DS handles the userPassword field. Unlike OpenLDAP it encodes it in base64 so instead of reading userPassword: {SSHA}0lP+r3Z1NVan7Caf4CG9oSgnTbQRrv/p it reads: userPassword::

ROracle ploblem I can't install ROracle in the window XP. Is there any way to install ROracle package on the windows OS ? I think I can enhance data acquisition performance using oracle native dirver instead of using ODBC. Tae Sik Han. North Carolina State University.

Inverting validates_format_of
I''ve got a regex validation on one of the inputs to my application, a file path. Now these only ever come from trusted users (administrators), but it would still be good to catch the most obvious attempts at directory traversal, etc. I''ve already got a regex that only allows \w then -, . and /. However, I want to stop two dots in a row, so I was wondering how to make the

Questions about lexical scope
Dear R-users, The numerical integration example given in Gentleman and Ihaka (2000), "Lexical Scope and Statistical Computing," JCGS, 9, 491-508, is very interesting and helpful in understanding how lexical scope is about. However, I got some questions that I just can't figure out. First all, allow me to copy the two functions given by the authors: midpoint <- function(f, a,

How to calculate a double integral ...?
Dear R-Friends, How can I calculate a double integral like \int_a^b \int_c^y g(x, y) dx dy where a, b, c are constants, g(x, y), e.g., g(x, y) = tan(x + y). I tried to nested integrate() and adapt(), but none of them working, seemingly due to the limits can not be specified constants. Best regards, C. Greek letters in legend without a space
I am trying to make a figure legend that says "uM" (but replace "u" with mu). When I use the following script, my legend looks more like "u M", rather than "uM". > legend(1,1, c(expression(1~mu~M))) How do I get rid of the space R places in when using the expression command to insert a greek letter? Thanks very much in advance Ming Kung Graduate

Coarsening the Resolution of a Dataset
Dear all, I have gridded data at 5' (minutes) resolution, which I intend to coarsen to 0.5 degrees. How would I go about doing this in R? I've had a search online and haven't found anything obvious, so any help would be gratefully received. I'm assuming that there will be several 'coarsening' techniques available - I'm after something fairly simple, which for example,

Asterisk, NAT, and RTP?
Hello I think I finally understood the issue/solution, but I'd like to make sure I'm correct: - In Diana Cionoiu's famous article on Freshmeat (http://freshmeat.net/articles/nat-traversal-for-the-sip-protocol), regardless of whether SIP end-points use a public IP or are behind a NAT, RTP packets flow directly between the two SIP end-points because the SIP server only acts... as an

predict.lm removes rownames for a single row. Why?
predict.lm keeps row names when working from several rows in newdata, but always removes rowname from a single row. The rownames are removed by the line in predict.lm predictor <- drop(X[, piv, drop = FALSE] %*% beta[piv]) What is the reason for that decision? I usually want to retain the row names. tmp <- data.frame(x=1:4, y=c(1,3,2,5)) tmp.lm <- lm(y ~ x, data=tmp) tmp.new <-
