Possibly broken system2 env-option
Hey all,
what is wrong with this command:
system2("echo", env = c(VAR = "Hello World"), args = c("$VAR"))
I am a bit confused, as help("system2") writes about the env option:
> character vector of name=value strings to set environment variables.
Is this option buggy, or am I using it just wrong?
Thanks for your help

using regular expressions to retrieve a digit-digit-dot structure from a string
Hi,
i need to recognize itemization structures in strings which follow the
format: "digit-digit-dot" like e.g.
1.
2.
19.
211.
Given the string " This happened in the 21. century." (the dot behind 21 is
used in German instead of 21st) I want know where the dots are but I do not
want the 21.-dot to be returned as well.
I am not good at regular expressions. How

Just out of curiosity, do you think it is possible to make this

Making logos...
Hi!
I'm trying to create a custom logo for syslinux but keep bumping my head
on the conversion to LSS16. The sample syslogo.png works fine so I
decided to start with a known quantity by loading it into the Gimp.
I cleared the canvas, color filled a blue background (0x000033) placed
some yellow letters on the blue (0xffff00) and saved the file back out
with the default compression. The

changing a list element's name during execution in lapply - possible?
Happy New Year, all!
I want to do calculations on each element of a list l, but i want the
returned list element to be named differently after the calculation.
Is it possible to do the renaming somehow within the lapply call?
l <- list(a=NA, b=NA)
lapply(l, function(x) {names(x) <- "new name"; return(x) })
This does not work, any ideas?

Merge or combine data frames with missing columns
Hi R-experts,
suppose I have a list with containing data frame elements:

Bug when calling system/system2 (and request for Bugzilla account)
I hope it's not too specific in my setup...
I've tried with system2 added on the first line, so:
Example.R:
system2('ls', timeout=5)
cat('Start non-interruptable functions\n')
sample_a <- sample(1:1e7)
sample_b <- sample(1:2e7)
matching <- match(sample_a, sample_b)
cat('Finished\n')
Sys.sleep(10)
And in terminal/bash:

ssh & ksh question
I need to run a report, source file on system 1, on system 2. I'd like to
do this in one script, not have a second script to run it.
Now
cat script | ssh system2
works fine. But no matter what I've tried, it gags on
ssh system2 <<EOF
blah, blah
EOF.
Mostly, I have a multiline awk script in the script, with \ at the end of
each line... *but* I think it's seeing "\n" as

Reordering the results from table(cut()) by break argument
I have a vector and need to count how many data points fall inside
each bin:
dat <- rnorm(100)
breaks <- -3:3
table((cut(dat, breaks)))
(-3,-2] (-2,-1] (-1,0] (0,1] (1,2] (2,3]
3 13 42 30 12 0
if I reverse the breaks vector, the results remains the same:
breaks <- rev(breaks)
table((cut(dat, breaks)))
(-3,-2] (-2,-1] (-1,0] (0,1] (1,2]

I want to apply a function to each column of a data frame that is numeric.
Thus I tried to check it for each column first:

Bug when calling system/system2 (and request for Bugzilla account)
Hi all,
I found some strange behaviour, which I think is a bug. Could someone make an account for me on Bugzilla or pass on my report?
The problem:
When pressing Ctrl-C when a file is sourced in R, run from Terminal (macOS), sometimes the entire session is ended right away, while I just want to stop the script. This is the case when I press Ctrl-C while some functions are running that don?t

utils::install.packages with quiet=TRUE fails for source packages on Windows
Hi,
Installing a source package on Windows using utils::install.packages()
with quiet=TRUE fails, while it works with the default quiet = FALSE.
The problem seems to be caused by the fact that when quiet = TRUE,
stdout and stderr are set to FALSE when calling "R CMD INSTALL" with
base::system2() here:

"figure margins too large" in RGtk2 drawing area as cairo device - why?
When using a gtkDrawingArea as a Cairo device I very often encounter the error: "figure margins too large"
Even for the below "getting started" example from http://www.ggobi.org/rgtk2/ this is the case.
