Warning: missing text for item ... in \describe?
Hello:
What might be the problem generating messages like "Warning:
missing text for item ... in \describe" with "R CMD check" and "R CMD
install"?
With the current version of "fda" on R-Forge, I get the following:
Warning: missing text for item 'fd' in \describe

best reference on generics
Hello, All:
What would you say is the best succinct reference to cite on use
of generic functions, especially S3 generics?
I want to add an appropriate citation on this to a forthcoming
book in the Springer "useR!" series (discussing the use of the 'fda'
package, which uses the S3 standard).
Thanks,

Error in formatDL(nm, txt, indent = max(nchar(nm, "w")) + 3)
This error can arise when getOption("width") is too small. 80 seems to be the
limit for me with R-3.3.2 on Windows.

List S3 methods and defining packages
Hi,
from the man page ?methods, I expected to be able to build pairs
(class,package) for a given S3 method, e.g., print, using
attr(methods(print), 'info').
However all the methods, except the ones defined in base or S4
methods, get the 'from' value "registered S3method for print", instead
of the actual package name (see below for the first rows).
Is this normal

methods() not listing some S3 plot methods...?
Dear List,
This may be related to this email thread initiated by Ben Bolker last
month: https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2011-July/061630.html
In answering this Question on StackOverflow
http://stackoverflow.com/q/7195628/429846 I noticed that `methods()` was
not listing some S3 methods for `plot()` provided by the mgcv package.
At the time I wanted to check the development version of R as

DNS problem when adding new record using samba-tool
Hi all,
I am setting up a new AD server with Samba 4.1.11 from the FreeBSD ports.
I struggle with the internal DNS. I add a new CNAME record but it does not
show up properly.
I gave the AD domain a new DNS domain (domain.fda) and the server the name
samba4.domain.fda.
I am using the internal DNS, and a forwarder to a bind server in the same
network.
After the AD provision I have this here

"could not find function" error in "R CMD check"
Hi, All:
What might cause "R CMD check" to report, "could not find
function" for a function that has long been in the 'fda' package?
Both Jim Ramsay in Ottawa, Canada, and I in San Jose, CA, get this
same error. I replicated it with a fresh, anonymous checkout from
R-Forge (svn checkout svn://svn.r-forge.r-project.org/svnroot/fda).
With this, I did

What do you recommend I do to get past cryptic error messages from

quieting the "apparent S3 methods" warning
Dear R-devel,
Recent versions of R CMD check have been flagging apparent S3 methods
that are not registered in the NAMESPACE as such. In most situations
this is very helpful. However, I have few cases in existing packages
where we have unfortunately named functions using a "." in them that
makes them appear as S3 methods when they are not.
As there is no existing class

R and FDA trials
Yesterday I just noticed the new document on R and regulatory aspects

Coming from an institution that performs a large number of clinical
trials for FDA and being an advocate of R myself, I have found that
the following issues usually come up when discussing the use of R for
FDA trials:

exporting s3 and s4 methods
If a package defined an S3 generic and an S4 generic for the same function (so as to add methods for S4 classes to the existing code), how do I set up the namespace to have them exported?
With
import(stats)
exportMethods(bigglm)
importClassesFrom(DBI)
useDynLib(biglm)
export(biglm)
export(bigglm)
in NAMESPACE, the S3 generic is not exported.

Why S4 methods of S3 'base' generics are not used in 'base' functions ?
Dear list,
It seems that S4 methods defined for an S3 'base' generic
are not used in 'base' functions.
This can be problematic when 'base' functions start with
something like 'as.matrix'.
### START R code

representation(realData = "numeric"))

Creating S3 methods for S4 classes (coming from r-package-devel)
Dear all,
I asked this question on r-package-devel but Martin Maechler pointed out
this was more suited on R-devel. So here it goes:
per the manual, one should create and register both the S3 and a S4 method
if one needs a method for an S4 class for a function using S3 dispatching.
This is cumbersome, and not very optimal.
I was wondering if there's a better way to do this. Currently I
