shade overlapping portions of circles (or other shapes)
I'm making some illustrations and it would be convenient to automatically shade the overlapping portions of circles. These illustrations are for Social Choice theory, a field in political science and economics. I've wrestled together some examples so you can see what I mean, but have not mastered the "color overlapping sections" problem (as you will see):

R-2.15.2 changes in computation speed. Numerical precision?
Speaking of optimization and speeding up R calculations... I mentioned last week I want to speed up calculation of generalized inverses. On Debian Wheezy with R-2.15.2, I see a huge speedup using a souped up generalized inverse algorithm published by V. N. Katsikis, D. Pappas, Fast computing of theMoore-Penrose inverse matrix, Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra, 17(2008), 637-650. I was so

portableParalleSeeds Package violation, CRAN exception?
I'm writing to ask for a policy exception, or advice on how to make this package CRAN allowable. http://rweb.quant.ku.edu/kran/src/contrib/portableParallelSeeds_0.9.tar.gz Yesterday I tried to submit a package on CRAN and Dr Ripley pointed out that I had not understood the instructions about packages. Here's the part where the R check gives a Note * checking R code for possible

Debian packaging and openblas related crash when profiling in R
Hello R-sig-debian and (hopefully) Dirk: On Debian wheezy, I have the R packaging that CRAN (you) provide. I run into a little trouble while trying to fiddle with alternative BLAS. I know you and I went around on this last year and I think perhaps I've found something wrong in the framework, or I've just done something wrong. I installed the packages openblas-base and openblas-dev, and

Problems booting from local hd
Hi, I've got a question regarding pxelinux: It seems that there is a buck in syslinux 3.86 (or still is in the current build) in the reset_pxe function. If I call "syslinux_local_boot(0)" (in a COM32 binary) the KeepPXE variable is always 1 which resets the PXE stack instead of unloading it: local_boot: push cs pop ds mov [LocalBootType],ax call vgaclearmode mov

Patch proposal for R style consistency (concerning deparse.c)
Hello, everybody. I recognize I'm asking you to deal with a not-very-important problem. But its important to me :) I've noticed a little inconsistency in the print.function() output. I traced the matter to deparse.c, for which I attach a patch that addresses 3 separate things. There's one important thing that I'm willing to stand behind and 2 litter things that I think would be

example to demonstrate benefits of poly in regression?
Here's my little discussion example for a quadratic regression: http://pj.freefaculty.org/R/WorkingExamples/regression-quadratic-1.R Students press me to know the benefits of poly() over the more obvious regression formulas. I think I understand the theory on why poly() should be more numerically stable, but I'm having trouble writing down an example that proves the benefit of this. I

Set up new CRAN mirror; but have questions before finalizing.
Hi, everybody I have an account on Dreamhost.com and when I renewed it recently, their message said my usage of storage and bandwidth had been reasonably low. In an idle moment about 3 weeks ago, I followed your instructions to set up a CRAN mirror on their server. Here it is: http://www.freefaculty.org/cran It is not hosted at my University, but it is a working, high availability server. Is

3d plotting alternatives. I like persp, but regret the lack of plotmath.
I have been making simple functions to display regressions in a new package called "rockchalk". For 3d illustrations, my functions use persp, and I've grown to like working with it. As an example of the kind of things I like to do, you might consult my lecture on multicollinearity, which is by far the most detailed illustration I've prepared.

configure statement for R-devel with updated zlib in user account
I'm aware R-devel no longer includes zlib. This works find on up-to-date Linux systems. On the older Centos 6 cluster at KU, they have zlib tool old for R-devel. The R-devel configure fails thus: checking if zlib version >= 1.2.5... no checking whether zlib support suffices... configure: error: zlib library and headers are required In other software, I've seen this kind of thing, so

Assistance in tracking a kernel/nouveau error
Greetings, I am resending this as it doesn't appear in the archives and no one responded...maybe it got routed to /dev/null or something :-) I have asked this question the Scientific Linux mailing list (a few months ago) and got the suggestion I talk to the kernel guys. I pinged a kernel guy I know, and his suggestion was to ask the Nouveau list. So here I am. :-) I have had my work laptop

Sweave documents have corrupted double quotes
I'm attaching a file foo.Rnw and I'm hoping some of you might run it through your R & latex systems to find out if the double-quotes in typewriter font turn out as black boxes (as they do for me). If you don't use Sweave, but you have a system with a working version of R and LaTeX, the file gives the instructions you need to use to process the file. The The file itself explains

something wrong in package submission procedure/website
Yesterday I uploaded new rockchalk_1.8.97. Then I received email saying that I needed to confirm the submission. Here's the message. Dear Paul E. To confirm the submission to CRAN, follow or copy & paste the following link into your

Proposed change in file.exists() to tolerate Windows
I'm writing to ask if R Core would make file.exists more Windows tolerant when the argument has a trailing slash. This has been discussed by users a few times here, I know it is not a new topic. But it is not a solved problem, yet. I acknowledge that CRAN packages exist which fix this by replacing file.exists(), but it seems more elegant to me to fix the problem in R itself. R Core goes to

You didn't give me some packages, so now I'm giving you some! R, TexLive, LyX, Gnumeric, etc.
I want up-to-dateish versions of TexLive, R, gnumeric, emacs, but on a more-or-less stable base of Centos-5.2. I asked for packages in this, but got no answers. So now I've built them and will let you try them if you want. I used the source packages from Fedora 8 and 9. I wanted TexLive because many of us have jumped ship to Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and it does offer TexLive, and the compatability

multi-platform equivalent of x11() ?
I want to write an R help example that throws up 2 graphs in separate windows, for comparison. In Linux I plot one, then run x11() to spawn a new on-screen device. Is there some generic equivalent so I can write an example that will work for Windows and Mac users as well? If there is none, don't you think it would be fun if there were? pj -- Paul E. Suggestion: pdf.options(embed=TRUE)
I learned last week that I generated a lot of PDFs and forgot to go back and embed the fonts in them. It would be very pleasant for me if pdf.options included an argument to turn on font embedding and have fonts always embedded. Always. Thanks for your time, as always. -- Paul E.
