Mac OS X : "get_xattr_names: llistxattr("some/path/here", 1024) failed" error
Hi,
I'm trying to make a small script to get rid of Apple's TimeMachine. The aim is to backup the files of my company.
I setup a MacMini with a lot of storage attached to it. The MacMini connects every once in a while to our data server (XServe) through SSH and pulls the files that need to be saved (I'm using the --link-dest option to limit the amount of files transferred, and to keep

Compilation for mac OS X with detect-renamed.diff patch
Hello,
I need to run rsync on a mac (OS X 10.6.5) with the --detect-renamed option
available.
I therefore started to compile rsync with the 3 relevant patches (in my
opinion) :
- fileflags.diff
- crtimes.diff
- detect-renamed.diff
Here are my exact compile instructions :
patch -p1 <patches/fileflags.diff
patch -p1 <patches/crtimes.diff
patch -p1 <patches/detect-renamed.diff

Patches for OS X.
What patch files are necessary to build rsync-3.0.9 for OS X 10.6.8 (Darwin
10.8.0)?
Mr. Bombich maintains an excellent page about this, but it's a bit out of
date, methinks, and his instructions point to patch files that return some
interesting errors.
My rsync-3.0.9 is working just fine, btw, with the fileflags and crtimes
and hfs-compression patches applied; I just wondered if the others

OS X and rsync: unpack_smb_acl errors and --numeric-ids
First of all. Thank you rsync developers and maintainers for all of your
work. It is awesome. I love rsync. I can't thank you enough.
So this has been brought up before:
https://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2010-April/024941.html
We are getting this error:
stderr: rsync: unpack_smb_acl: sys_acl_get_info(): Undefined error: 0 (0)

Error messages 3.0.6pre1
I compiled 3.0.6pre1, including the crtimes and fileflags patches for
use on Intel OS X 10.5.6, as described by Mr. Bombich (thanks!) here:
<http://www.bombich.com/mactips/rsync.html>
I want to use 3.0.6 because it seems that this bug:
<https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5365>
has been resolved (yay!).

rsync 3.1.1 wrong transfer of app packages using --backup
Dear All,
I found a workaround for the corrupted backup app package files though there is probably a more intelligent way.
When the destination is empty or missing (rather than an update)
rsync.c calls make_backup and returns 1 when it encounters
if (x_lstat(fname, &sx.st, NULL) < 0)
return 1;
the calling code in rsync.c:
if ( make_backups > 0 && overwriting_basis) {

lsetxattr() failed: Operation not permitted on symlinked locked directory
Hi,
I am using rsync 3.0.7 from MacPorts under Mac OS X 10.6.4. I am getting the error in the subject in the presence of a symlinked and locked directory with an extended attribute. To reproduce:
mkdir src
mkdir dst
mkdir src/dir-with-ea-and-uchg
./xattr-util --set mamma.mia "How about a nice pizza?" src/dir-with-ea-and-uchg
cd src
ln -s dir-with-ea-and-uchg/ symlink-to-dir

Passed all tests with flying colors on Mac OS X 10.4.11 - synopsis of installation and testing
Awesome work Wayne. I have been following the various threads about
running rsync 3.0.0 on MacOS X 10.4.11 and wanted to confirm that
following all the various bits of advice yields a clean running rsync
(as tested by backup bouncer).
I am running MacOS X 10.4.11 on PPC. The following is a synopsis of
my installation procedure (as gathered from the various emails in the
archive) - note

[PATCH] xattrs not set on locked files that already exist on target
Working with rsync 3.0.2, it appears that rsync isn't unlocking files
before setting the file attributes when those files already exist.
This generates error messages on subsequent such as:
rsync: rsync_xal_set: lsetxattr("locked_file","test_xattr") failed:
Operation not permitted (1)

crtimes discrepancy on PPC
On a PPC machine running Mac OS X, I noticed that creation time is not
preserved for files that are transferred (i.e. versus files that are
not transferred, or files that have only attribute changes). I
discovered two things that work together to cause this:
1) cmp_time (util.c) doesn't check for negative values provided in
file1 or file2. If file2 is positive, and file1 is

Why is my rsync transfer slow?
Just chiming in here,
I haven’t read all the previous posts so may be repeating…
Mike Bombich has a good piece on benchmarks for various source/destination scenarios with rsync.

Note that copying to sparsebundle on local media is as fast as to local disk. Sparsebundle is a mac filesystem whereas NAS is not so certain file

rsync and hfs+ compressed files damaged
Hi All,
I have been using rysnc 3.0.6 with Mike's rsync_3.0.6-hfs-compression_20091027.diff patch (as well as the standard osx patches) with good results. I discovered that clones done on 10.6 using this rsync cause some executable files ( the ones that are mostly compressed this way on osx ) to be damaged.
I did a test twice and indeed a handful of them are damaged. They all appear to be in
