Windows 7 v. Samba: why is default network profile in 'NETLOGON/Default User.v2' not used?
Setup: - Samba 3.5.6 (Debian Stable release, amd64); - Testing Windows 7 client behaviour, specifically with regard to users who don't yet have profiles. The Windows docs state that a domain logon for a new user will cause the default network profile to be used if available, if not then a default local profile is used instead. The location for the default network profile is

Change password expiry date for ALL users?
Hello, I want to set the expiry date for passwords for all users with one command. As --pwd-must-change-time only works for a single user and policy settings are not applied after a change, I was wondering how to solve this. Is the only way to write a script which runs "pdbedit --pwd-must-change-time..." for every user? greets Jimmy -- Andreas "Jimmy"

Samba with LDAP Intergration
All, I am trying to work out if the current setup is possible: I would like to have Samba running to authenticate shares for /home directories running under FC6. All of my users are posixAccount's in an LDAP Directory. I would like to use this information to authenticate these shares but without making any changes to the LDAP Directory itself (so including no new objects or schema

Tips/hints for Windows network management
Hello, I'm looking for some extremely general tips/hints/ideas here, because I am sure that I may be missing out on some good ways of managing the Windows PCs on my network. This is what I have and what is available to me: - Samba 3.0.x (current Debian/Sarge version) - LDAP backend for Samba - Windows XP SP2 clients - Domain users are typically unprivileged users - A

Easy testing of nouveau
Hi, I have following idea, but do know if it's good. I suppose nouveau has not that many testers. To install the git drivers is very cumbersome and people can easily brake their systems also. How about assembling live usb out of git so that people could quickly stick it in, perform some tests and submit the logs/findings. What do you think about it? Arokux

Samba with pam_group.so: add group on log in
Hi, I am using pam_group.so to add some additional groups to the users. However, although Samba obeys pam restrictions, it obeys only "session" type of management. pam_group.so, however can be used only with auth. That's why if a user logs in through Samba it won't have a particular group added and so not enough permissions to work with a share. How else can I add a group to a

Strange locking behaviour upsets Apache
We have a server which runs Samba and Apache. Web developers edit their files (via Windows mapped drives) from Windows XP SP2. These files are typically CGI files and the developers' routine is: while (web page not quite right) { 1. Edit file 2. Save 3. Click Reload on web browser 4. Check results } They go around that loop many times during a typical development run.

speed of samba vs Windows
Is there any reason to believe that a samba server would be slower when serving up roaming profiles than a real Windows server? I know roaming profiles are slow by nature and that there are things you can do to help like configuring ffolder redirection. But all else being equal, how would a samba server compare to a Windows server when it comes to speed specifically with respect to roaming

sambaLMPassword
I have a Samba-PDC installation (version is 3.6.3) with openLDAP. When I change the password from a client (Windows/XP and Windows/7) the attribute "sambaNTPassword" is changed and I can log-in with the new pssword. The problem is that the content of the attribute "sambaLMPassword" is deleted. I remember that in my previous version of Samba (3.0.28) both attributes were

sambaLMPassword needed?
Hi I have upgraded or old samba PDC (debian lenny) to samba (debian wheezy). We use openldapto authenticate ,our linux and windows users. Now I see that if I create a new user the smbpasswd (in a script) does not create the sambaLMPassword attribute anymore. Do we still need it. I have read some info about it but its not clear if its still needed or not Thankyou for any help

sambaNTPassword does NOT write to master LDAP when machines auto change the values
We have SuSE SLES9 servers with LDAP master/slave replication (24 replications/BDC's) All working fine -joining domain etc. The problem I am having is PC's at remote sites (BDC) with a local replica (OpenLDAP) periodically change the sambaNTPassword/sambaLMPassword on there own and write to the local LDAP server and do NOT follow the referral to the master. I have written scripts to

Convert ssha password to sambaNTpassword?
Is it possible to take a SSHA password from an ldif and create a proper sambaNTpassword from it? Here's the scenario: the ldap servers in our organization do not have the samba schema installed and the likelihood of that happening is slim. I still want to provide clients with as close to a single sign on solution as possible and I can get an ldif of the accounts I need. However, the

calculating passwords, and what to do with sambaLMPassword
Hi, I'm trying to calculate the passwords so i can change them from a php-gui, an as i see it, userPassword can have any form if the cryptation algorithm is stated before the hash, like "{md5}blahblah32bit". In the docs, it states that sambaNTPassword is a md4 hash, wich should be calculatable (haven't done it yet though). And last for the sambaLMPassword: I can't find

sambaLMPassowrd and sambaNTPassword
Hi all, I have plan to upgrade samba 3.0.2 to current release, aparently some work must be done on the user entries on LDAP since the samba.schema has change. While do some changes, I want to remove sambaLMPassword attribute so I don't need to maintain it in sync with sambaNTPassword. Will I break something if I remove this attribute? -- --beast

Password policies in the LDAP server
Hi We have some Samba servers using LDAP (389 DS) as backend. In the LDAP server, we have defined some policies to make the passwords stronger. When a user tries to change his password (Control-Alt-Del), this message appears in the LOGs: ==> /var/log/samba/xptest <== [2010/06/28 12:26:26, 2] auth/auth.c:check_ntlm_password(309) check_ntlm_password: authentication for user [10000001S]

Issue with SambaNTPassword not replicating
Hi, I set up a Samba PDC/BDC configuration some time ago using LDAP as configured here - http://www.atlanticlinux.ie/blog/?p=25 The configuration has been working without problems for a few months now but we have noticed one issue. When users take their laptop from the network the PDC is serving to the networking the BDC is serving - they sometimes have problems logging in. A dig through
