unit testing for R packages?
Hi All,
I'm interested in putting some unit tests into an R package I'm
building. I have seen assorted things such as Runit library, svUnit
library, packages
with 'tests' directories, etc
I grep'd "unit test" through the writing R extensions manual but didn't find
anything. Are there any suggestions out there? Currently I have
several (a lot?) classes/methods

seeing feedback when R CMD check pkg runs unit tests.
good day here,
I'm maintaining a couple of R modules, both on r-forge.
tests for these modules are written making use of unit testing, and I
make use of the svUnit module, part of SciViews-R.
I also make use of examples in the .Rd files.
my question regards 'R CMD check pkg'.
if an _example_ is not run correctly, I get clear feedback on the
command line where I run 'R CMD

Test Driven Development in R
Hi,
I wonder what kind of interest there is on Test Driven Development (TDD) in R.
Test Driven Development consists of writing the test before the function, and
iteratively build the function until it passes the test.
Python and Ruby (specially Ruby) have very strong test-oriented cultures. In
fact, in Ruby at least the custom is to do TDD and lately Behavior-driven
development (BDD). In BDD,

R CMD check: Error in .C
Function/file names are hypothetical. Say I have written myfunction.R,
which calls myfunction.c via .C("myfunction", ...).
I've compiled successfully myfunction.c via R CMD SHLIB myfunction.c
in the terminal. Then, in the R console:
dyn.load("myfunction.so")
source("myfunction.R")
test <- myfunction() # works fine
So everything is in order, myfunction works

R 2.14.1 memory management under Windows
I computed "system.time(diag(30000))" with R 2.12.0 on Fedora 13 Linux
with 4 GB RAM and with R 2.14.1 on Windows 7 with 8 GB RAM:
Linux (4 GB RAM): 0, 0.21, 0.21 -- a fifth of a second
Windows 7 (8 GB RAM): 11.37 7.47 93.19 -- over 1.5 minutes. Moreover,
during most of that time, I could not switch windows or get any response
from the system. When I first encountered this, I

Gaussian Quadrature for arbitrary PDF
Hi all,
We know that Hermite polynomial is for
Gaussian, Laguerre polynomial for Exponential
distribution, Legendre polynomial for uniform
distribution, Jacobi polynomial for Beta distribution. Does anyone know
which kind of polynomial deals with the log-normal, Studentæ¯ t, Inverse
gamma and Fisheræ¯ F distribution?
Thank you in advance!

Rprofile.site under Windows 7?
Hello All:
I'm still unable to get Rprofile.site to set, e.g.,
options(max.print=222), as I did with previous versions of R.
I just found similar questions posed by Trevor Miles and Ross Bowden
with replies by Uwe Ligges and Duncan Murdoch.
In addition to the things I tried documented below, I also copied
Rprofile.site into "R_HOME/etc/i386" and

Package development process?
Hello, All:
What thoughts might you have on "The R Software Package
Development Process"?
I'm looking for ideas, materials, references, and / or
collaborators for an article on this topic to be submitted to the
Communications of the ACM. My limited experience with other languages
such as Matlab and Python suggests that R may be fairly unique with CRAN

Usage of R CMD INSTALL
The help page for INSTALL says, in part,
Some package sources contain a `configure' script that can be
passed arguments or variables via the option `--configure-args'
and `--configure-vars', respectively, if necessary. The latter is
useful in particular if libraries or header files needed for the
package are in non-system directories. In this case, one can

write.xls
Hello, All:
The "writeFindFn2xls" function in the "sos" package tries to
write an Excel file with 3 sheets ('PackageSum2', 'findFn', 'call').
Unfortunately, it is often unable to do this because of configuration
problems that are not easy to fix. I've found 3 contributed packages
that provide facilities to write Excel files with

Replace back slashes with forward slashes?
Hello, All:
What can people tell me about converting back slashes to forward
slashes in character strings?
Several years ago, Prof. Ripley provided a solution, which I lost
and have not been able to find.
Below please find a function to do this. I do not find this very
satisfactory, however, because it uses "scan" and therefore operates on

I am trying to use piecewise linear regression to approximate a

need, therefore, I want build an array of regression models to automate
the approximation job. Could you please give me any clue?

In an earlier post, a person wanted to divide each of the rows of
rawdata by the row vector sens so he did below but didn't like it and
asked if there was a better solution.
rawdata <- data.frame(rbind(c(1,2,2), c(4,5,6))) sens <- c(2,4,6)
temp <- t(rawdata)/sens
temp <- t(temp)
print(temp)
Gabor sent three other solutions and I understood 2 of them but not the
