Remove all spaces from a string so it can be used by assign()
Hi I have a string "56 Fe [1]" that I would like to use as a variable name by using "assign" however I think the spaces and brackets might be causing R some trouble. How can I change the string so that it just becomes 56Fe1 and can be used as a variable name. Thank You Kurt _________________________________________________________________ [[elided Hotmail spam]]

Package 'operators'
Folks, In brief -- how many of you have found the 'operators' package to be valuable in their work? Not that I lack respect for the amount of work involved in creating and maintaining a package, but I am unsure about the utility of these new operators. Several of the operators appear to offer different ways of accomplishing tasks that are already relatively easy in base R -- regular

Rjava, RImageJ, and/or S4 question.
I am out of my league with this question. The following code starts the java imaging program ImageJ from within R, and displays an image (assuming ImageJ is installed on your computer). library(RImageJ) img <- IJ$openImage( file.choose() ) #pick an available .tif file img$show() # make the image object visible # An image is now displayed # find out about the objects involved >

RImageJ initial release
Hello, I've uploaded the initial release (0.0-142) of the RImageJ package to CRAN. The package allows R to use the facilities of the java based image processing and analysis platform ImageJ. See also the announcement on my blog, with a very simple example showing how to use the package: http://romainfrancois.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2009/06/22/using-ImageJ-from-R%3A-the-RImageJ-package

image recognition in R
I have some images of bugs (insects) with many bugs in each image. I want to count the number of bugs and to have an estimate of the area of each one. I've tried searching for an R package to do so with no success. Is this a task that I should pursue doing in R or should I restrict myself to specific image analysis software (e.g. ImageJ)?. The reason I consider R would be a good choice is

par() defaults in Rprofile
Dear List, I've tried to set default par() in .Rprofile by putting the following in the .First function: setHook(packageEvent("graphics", "onLoad"), function(...) {graphics::par(cex.axis=1.5, cex.lab=2, las=1)} ) My goal was to set par() defaults without opening a device everytime at startup. However, the next plot I create doesn't show these

suppress startup messages from default packages
Hi all, several packages print messages during loading. How do I avoid to see them when the packages are in the defaultPackages? Here is an example. Error in RImageJ
Hello everybody, I'm running R under Mac OS 10.6.3 on a MacBook 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I've recently installed R 2.11.0 and the RImageJ library v. 0.1-142. When trying to follow the example given in the package manual and I get the following error: download.file( "http://www.google.fr/intl/en_en/images/logo.gif", dest = "google.gif" ) trying URL

Is it possible to save raster data as a bitmap?
Hi all, I intend to use R for some image manipulations/analysis. It's relatively straightforward to read and manipulate image files in R, but I also would like to store the resulting image (after manipulation) as a bitmap image with the same resolution as the original image. Here is a simplified version of what I'm working on: # Start example require("RImageJ") # first open

Generating 1-bit and 8-bit BMP files using R
Hi, I'm trying to use the data which I generate within R to make images in .bmp format to be lateron printed by a printer. My first thought was the RImageJ package, but this seems to be discontinued. What I am currently doing is generating a matrix of grey values, which needs to be parsed into the right image format. Is anyone aware of a package or rather "easy" way to generate

New Quantian releases with almost all of CRAN / BioC
[ I hope this is not considered off-topic for the list: A new Quantian release was just announced, and it contains even more R. As before, we have R (now 2.2.1), ESS, Ggobi, Rpy, several BioInfo tools -- but now we also have RSPerl, JGR, rJava and more. A full sync to CRAN and BioC as of Feb 25, 2006 now yields dim(installed.packages())[1] of 877. Feedback welcome, but

automated image processing
Hi, I am looking for a R package which is capable to process and analysis pictures of tissues (stained) in an automatic way. I had a look on biops and EBImage (Bioconductor) but they are not automatic... Did you already use/know a such package ? Thanks, - Martial _________________________________________________________________ Tchattez en direct en en vidéo avec vos amis !

Rtemp directories accumulating over time
Hola! There is a nuisance that the number of directories with name starting Rtmp (and always empty) in my temp directory is increasing over time. I put the following in my .Rprofile: tmp0001 <- tempdir() setHook( packageEvent("base","onUnload"), function(...) unlink( tmp0001, recursive=TRUE) ) which solves part of the problem, but not all. So there are also

duplicate STRSXP : shallow copy ?
Hello, As this little program illustrates, duplicating a STRSXP does not seem deep enough. require( inline ) fx <- cfunction( signature( x = "character"), ' SEXP y = PROTECT( duplicate( x ) ); int n = LENGTH(x); int nc = 0 ; char* p = 0 ; for( int i=0; i<n; i++){ p = (char*)( CHAR( STRING_ELT( y , i ) ) ); nc = strlen( p ) ; for( int j=0; j<nc; j++){ p[j] =

Registering S3 class from external package
The package I'm working on can extract data from external packages but would otherwise have no dependency on them. However, I desire to be able to dispatch based on an external S3 class if its package is attached (.First.lib). My code is S4-based and its package has NAMESPACE. Registering the external class prior to the other package being attached doesn't seem to work so I am attempting
