problem building dvi and pdf documentation on Darwin 10.2.6
I just installed R-1.7.0 on Darwin 6.6 (a.k.a. MacOS 10.2.6). 'make' and 'make check' run without any problems. 'make info' builds with no complaints, but 'make dvi' and 'make pdf' fail. I get refman.dvi and refman.pdf OK (with some warnings from pdftex that some names are referenced that do not exist), but R-FAQ.{dvi,pdf} fails as shown below. Attempts

error in building R-1.9.0 sources under Win32
I am trying to compile the R-dev sources on WinXP using mingw 3.1.0-1 and fpTeX 0.7. In the past I have been able to build the sources fine but now I receive an error in the process that I havent seen reported on the list before. Everything works fine until I get to 'make docs'. I now get the message below while building the R-admin manual (refman.pdf builds fine) and the make process

Building manuals are failing now that MikTex 2.9 has removed texi2dvi.exe
According to the MikTex bug reports [1], MikTex 2.9 has removed texi2dvi.exe last week (on 2015-09-29) as "it was not compatible (anymore) with the original shell script texi2dvi (GNU Texinfo)." I found this out the hard way as I just (unknowingly) updated MikTex this evening, and then, while building R-devel_2015-10-08 on Windows7 64bit using the Rtools 3.3 toolchain (4.9.3 branch), had

[R] Somewhat obscure bug in R 3.4.0 building from source
Hi Peter, Duncan & Bert, Thank you kindly for the responses. Indeed, doc/NEWS.pdf is included in the source distribution, and then removed upon "make clean". I thought that it might be useful to report this for your benefit, but on closer inspection it appears that I'm getting errors that arise due to incompatibilities in my texlive and texinfo installations. This is the error

Problem Sweaving vignettes: MiKTeX's texi2dvi reports errors
Hi, I am trying to create a Bioconductor package. Everything installs and checks fine. Now I'm on my last step, which is to create a vignette. I'm trying to test the Sweave process, to make sure I can build a vignette. I am stuck at the texi2dvi stage, which fails when I try to process the example Sweave-test-1.tex file. I am using Windows binary R distributions, and have the same

WARNING you cannot build info or html versions of the R manuals
Are you building from a source tarball or using the Fedora SRPM? I strongly advise you to rebuild the SRPM, because the resulting binary RPM will have all the necessary deps for building and installing. You might need to change the spec up a bit, since I assume building on Fedora means a modern system, and f17.... isn't modern. On Jan 16, 2016 4:48 PM, Rolf Turner <r.turner at

R Compilation gets stuck on Windows 64
Hi Avraham, What a coincidence, I have been following this post of yours: https://www.avrahamadler.com/2013/10/24/an-openblas-based-rblas-for-windows-64-step-by-step/ Looks like this post is slightly older than what you have shared previously. It is strange that you did not get the attachments. I am pasting the contents of the MkRules.local here:

r-base build: failure to convert R-FAQ to pdf
We have received an email in Ubuntu alerting us that something strange was going on during the r-base 2.7.1 rc build (see [1]). It seems that there is an error during the convertion of R-FAQ.texi to pdf. The following excerpt, taken from [2], shows the problem: /bin/sh: line 0: test: too many arguments TEXINPUTS=".:$TEXINPUTS" /usr/bin/texi2dvi --texinfo="@set UseExternalXrefs

attach (S-style)?
Hi everyone, Being new to the crowd of R users I am wondering what the equivalent of attach("/home/bla/hoffmann/R/.RData",2) (S style) is in R. What I want is a split of .RData repositories. One in a central place where I keep functions and interesting stuff important for all work I am doing, an several others which contain stuff of an dividual project only. When I start in a

TEXINFO error when building R-3.4.0
Hello. I am trying to build 64 bit R-3.4.0 (specifically R-patched_2017-04-23) on Windows 64 and have run into an issue with building the html files. I am using Rtools34 version 1962, the texinfo zip from <http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/Rtools/> unzipped into C:\R\texinfo, and Strawberry perl 5.24.1.1-64bit. In my MkRules.local I have the following, which worked for building R in 3.3.x: #

Avoid texinfo 6.1
There are problems with the texi2dvi in the recently released texinfo 6.1. (The bug has been reported.) Avoid 6.1 if you can, but if not setting the environment variable R_TEXI2DVICMD=emulation will enable R to build, including NEWS.pdf and all the vignettes. We are working on a more complete workaround for R-devel and 3.2.4. -- Brian D. Ripley, ripley at stats.ox.ac.uk

Windows vignettes, shQuote, texi2dvi
I noticed a shQuote fix for Windows in the svn logs. Just wanted to point out that this will favorably affect texi2dvi on Windows which previously used UNIX quoting and so generated an incorrect Windows command. (Note that texi2dvi is used when creating vignettes.) Another problem is that the recommended tex distribution for Windows, fptex, does not have texi2dvi in the first place. The

R-devel cross-building
I was cross-building R-devel (1.7.0). The tail of the error message from running make on a machine with makeinfo (GNU texinfo 3.12) 1.68 is at the end of this email. The same procedure went fine on a machine with makeinfo (GNU texinfo) 4.1. My first guess is that the version of makeinfo is causing this. However, this didn't happen with R-1.6.2beta. Please advise.
