Good evening, I recently have observed slow merges when combining multiple data frames derived from DataFrame and base::data.frame. I observed that the index column of intermediate tables was of class <AsIs> (automatically converted from character). The problem occurred mainly when using the sorted = T option in base::merge. This can be traced to xtfrm.AsIs being more than 100 times slower

logical 'or' on list of vectors
Suppose I have a list of logicals, such as returned by lapply: Theoph$Dose[1] <- NA Theoph$Time[2] <- NA Theoph$conc[3] <- NA lapply(Theoph,is.na) Is there a direct way to execute logical "or" across all vectors? test for nested factors
Is there a conventional way to test for nested factors? I.e., if 'a' and 'b' are lists of same-length factors, does each level specified by 'a' correspond to exactly one level specified by 'b'? 'xtfrm' performance (influences 'order' performance) in R devel

testing the contents of an environment
Suppose I want to delete everything in my working directory that is not a function. It seems that sapply(ls(),is.function) always returns FALSE, because ls() returns objects of mode character. How do I evaluate is.function(), not on a character string, but on the object that character string represents? Thanks, Tim

Extent of time zone vulerability for POSIX date and time classes

fitting the gamma cumulative distribution function
Hi. I have a vector of quantiles and a vector of probabilites that, when plotted, look very like the gamma cumulative distribution function. I can guess some shape and scale parameters that give a similar result, but I'd rather let the parameters be estimated. Is there a direct way to do this in R? merge performace degradation in 2.9.1

Function 'factor' issues
In R devel, function 'factor' has been changed, allowing and merging duplicated 'labels'. Issue 1: Handling of specified 'labels' without duplicates is slower than before. Example: x <- rep(1:26, 40000) system.time(factor(x, levels=1:26, labels=letters)) Function 'factor' is already rather slow because of conversion to character. Please don't add slowdown.

Dear Ivan, thanks for the confirmation and the proposed patch. I just wanted to add some notes regarding the relevance of this: base::merge using by.x=0 or by.y=0 (i.e. matching on row.names) will automatically add a column Row.names which is I(row.names(x)) to the corresponding input table (using I() since revision 39026 to avoid conversion of character to factor). Dear all, actually, it is not clear to me why there is still a protection of the added Row.names column in merge using I(). This seems to stem from a time when R would automatically convert character vectors to factor in data.frame on insert. However, I can't reproduce this behaviour even in data.frames generated with stringsAsFactors = T in current versions of R. Maybe the I() inserted in r
