Out of memory problems - some interesting log file entries
This is a newly installed server running CentOS 4 with all current updates.
It's been cruising nicely since installation a week ago until this morning.
Then everyting started timing out and the attached messages appeared in the
log (this is a short and sanitized extract). Load went sky high.
Had to reboot to restore service and all looks happy again now, but if anyone

Suspected GPL violation by Erightsoft "super"
Hi guys,
the SUPER codec by Erightsoft
http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html
contains lots of GPL and LGPL code:
mplayer, ffmpeg, x264, musepack, theora,
which they admit and give credit for.
Still, their product is proprietary,
and they insist on it. I tried to get
the source through their forum, but they
of course won't give it:

GPL violation by Synology
Synology ( https://www.synology.com/en-global ) is one of best selling
brands of consumer/prosumer/SMB NASes, with revenue estimated to be in
the $100M+ range.
Several of their NAS backup options use rsync either explicitly or
under the hood (NAS-to-Remote-NAS backup, Shared-Folder-Sync), and
they run the rsync daemon (under File Services). rsync is an integral
part of their solution.
They use a

SysLinux GPL license violation
Hi there,
As I could not find a direct maintainer email address, I'm sending this
to the mailing list.
SysLinux, being a GPL product, is being sold under a very restrictive
license without even offering the sources to the public.
I've written up my findings here: http://www.palli.nl/~ivo/rdp/
Please have a look for yourself.

[LLVMdev] llvm.org bug trend
Over most of the past year, I have been keeping an eye on the overall LLVM.org open-bug count.
Sampling the count (almost) every Monday morning, it is a consistently non-decreasing number.
I thought I'd post something about it to the Dev lists, as the count broke 4000 this past week.
For your entertainment here's a chart that Excel produced from the data. (To make it more
dramatic, I

Unresponsive Agents - PE 2.0
Hi there,
I am relatively new to Puppet (totally new) and had been cruising
right along for a few days until about a week ago when our puppet
agents went unresponsive. I''ve restarted both them and the servers
several times to no avail. Can anyone point me down the path of how
to diagnose this issue? We are currently evaluating Puppet to bring
into our Enterprise for managing server

[LLVMdev] [cfe-dev] llvm.org bug trend
It would be really nice if our bug tracker had something like the "Issues:
30-day summary" that this jira instance has <
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE>.
Another interesting statistic that might be interesting to plot alongside
the "open bugs" graph is "total lines of code" (or maybe just plot the
ratio "bugs/LOC").

[LLVMdev] llvm.org bug trend
This week, for the very first time since I started sampling (14 months ago),
the weekly open-bug count went DOWN.
Traffic on llvm-bugs indicates that Bill Wendling is doing a lot of this. Huzzah!

R on the iPhone/iPad? Not so much....a GPL violation
Hi all,
There have been posts in the past about R being made available for the iPhone and perhaps more logically now, on the iPad. My recollection is that the hurdle discussed in the past was primarily a lack of access to a CLI on the iPhone's variant of OSX, compelling the development of a GUI interface for R specifically for these devices. R itself, can be successfully compiled with the

looking for input on broadband router with QoS and VPN support
Hi,
We're installing an * box next week (pbxtra from fonality) and I'm
trying to come up with a solution for remote users that want a phone in
their home. I need VPN and QoS capability, wireless support would be a
nice to have. Ethernet handoff is fine, i don't need integrated dsl or
cable modem...
I've been googling and cruising the list and can find bits and pieces

pop3_lock_session question
Hello, I'm preparing to convert from qpopper + UW-IMAP to dovecot.
So far testing has gone very well. One problem we haven't figured
out is that long-running POP sessions keep the mailbox locked, so that
the MDA times out while trying to deliver. We're using "maildrop" as
our MDA if that matters.
We don't see this issue for dovecot IMAP sessions. During long-running

Robust ANOVA functions in R?
Hello,
Anyone familiar with robust ANOVA in R? Please help.
I am conducting a between-between-within (2 X 2 X 2) ANOVA, with the focus on the significance of the three-way interaction. Because of very uneven sample sizes, and the violation of covariance homogeneity, I need to use some sort of robust ANOVA method, and I prefer bootstrap. I am aware of Rand Wilcox's robust package that can

Multiple GPL violations including Samba in Auralic products
Hello,
I recently bought an Auralic Aries Mini streamer. This little streamer
can also function as a NAS when mounting a laptop drive or ssd inside,
via samba.
The box did not come with a media containing source code and did not
include a GPL written offer.
So I asked Auralic to provide the source code for all GPlv2 and v3
packages used.
For the Linux kernel and their modifications, they asked

Rails on a Mac - I''ve seen the light
Well I finally broke down and got me one of those Intel iMacs and a copy
of Textmate. It took me a bit to get use to Textmate but once I learned
some of the shortcuts I was cruising. Mac OS X took very little time to
get used to as I already had a decent *nix background. Up until this
point I had been primarily on Windows.
Some of the productivity highlights I''ve found:

looking for input on broadband router with QoS andVPN support
Bob,
Have you looked at any of the products by Zyxel? With QOS, VPN & wireless
support they have:
For ADSL: Prestige 652HW
Firewall/Router: Zywall 10W & 30W
I'll be honest, I havn't used any of these yet. We were looking for similar
products to suuport our VOIP installs. We just ordered some demo units from
Zyxel, we shoul have them later this week. I'll let you know
