RHOME
R-help --
I built R-2.2.1 in my own directory on a sun (solaris). Now I would like
the sysadmin to move the contents to /usr/local/lib and place the binary
in /usr/local/bin. No problem. However, the RHOME variable defaults to
the directory from which R was built so it is not usable by anyone but me
or ROOT. I would like to avoid building this again if possible. Any ideas?
Thanks,

lme4 and function 'cholmod_start' not provided by package 'Matrix' / Ubuntu
Hello all,
Using Ubuntu 9.04 and R 2.8.1.
For a project I need to use the Zelig package, which in turn wants to
use the lme4 package. When trying to use Zelig and it tries to its required
packages I get the following error message.
Error in dyn.load(file, DLLpath = DLLpath, ...) :

Latest revision of lme4 requires 'Matrix' >= 0.995.2 but that version is not available on CRAN
I just updated the packages on my pc (windows xp). When loading lme4 I get
> library(lme4)
Error: package 'Matrix' 0.995-1 was found, but >= 0.995.2 is required by 'lme4'
'Matrix' 0.995-1 is indeed installed on my computer, but update.packages() does not capture a never version; and seemingly for good reasons: When looking at CRAN, the new version of Matrix is

issues with R Library on a Server
Hello,
I am a bit over my head on this issue. My colleagues and I are running
R off of our server. We all have admin rights and prior to yesterday
we all had our own libraries. Our main system administrator advised us
that we should have a shared library. So, I am trying to do this.
I have downloaded the latest version of R and installed it on the
main drive of our server in the "Program

Failing to print mer object in an RData image
Hi all
I have problems in accessing a mer object called model.01 from a
workspace that was created with R 2.8.1 and saved with save into an
.RData file (on Windows XP or Ubuntu 8.10, don't remember anymore).
Now I want to open it in R 2.9.0 on Ubuntu 8.10. I use
# load workspace
load("name.RData")
which seems to work:
ls() # all objects in there

library location and error messages when loading packages
Hello,
I am running R on a server that several people share. Previously we
all had separate libraries for R.
I have set up R so everyone on the server shares the same library and
I downloaded the latest version of R and installed it on the
main drive of our server in the "Program Files" folder (obvious
enough).
I changed the Environmental Variables in the advanced system setting

Problem cross-compiling on Ubuntu
I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) and R 2.7.1.
I've built a package from source (a modified version of gbm) and it
contains some C++ code. I now want to cross-compile it to get a
Windows version.
I installed R using
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install r-base
sudo apt-get install r-base-dev
So far as I can tell, I've also followed all the instructions in the

Patchy 'front-end' package installation problems using -R- 2.15.1
I think this is the fourth attempt to send this blessed message, so let's hope this gets through without any 'unprocessed' or 'ignored' in-lines on auto-reply.
I wish to report to you some strange problems I'm experiencing with installing packages directly into my -R- 2.15.1 (there is an indirect solution, which I note below). First, here's some essential information:

tweedie and lmer
Hello all,
I have count data with about 36% of observations being zeros. I found
in some of the examples of the r-help mail archives that a tweedie
family of distributions could be used to fit a model with random
effects. Upon installing the tweedie package and attempting to fit the
following model:

LAPACK libraries improperly linked
I am not sure if this is an R development problem or not. I am starting
with completely clean OS and and installing the latest version of R
without trying to anything special but I am having trouble with the
LAPACK library linking when I try to build packages that require them.
I thought perhaps my problem may be if interest here.
I just dumped Vista off a laptop formatted the disk and

Using quasibinomial family in lmer
Dear R-Users,
I can't understand the behaviour of quasibinomial in lmer. It doesn't
appear to be calculating a scaling parameter, and looks to be reducing the
standard errors of fixed effects estimates when overdispersion is present
(and when it is not present also)! A simple demo of what I'm seeing is
given below. Comments appreciated?
Thanks,

R CMD CHECK question
hi,
I have two private packages, the first (`pkc') depending on the second one
(`roiutils'). The source code and DESCRIPTION files describes the dependency
as it should be ('Imports', `require'), at least I think so.
now, running
R CMD CHECK pkc
yields the following output in which I have inserted my

read.spss {foreign} doesn't work over network?
I'm unable to open an SPSS file over my network. If I copy it to my
local C:/ drive I can read it. I saved the command (in a "crib sheet"
text file) in order to avoid all the typing, so I'm pretty sure I've
done it before. I verified that the file I'm trying to read is OK.
This is what happens:

After upgrading to R 2.6.0, I'm having trouble running lmer:

So I thought I'd upgrade lme4 to the latest version, but
unfortunately the compilation fails - perhaps there's a missing
