symbolic linking libs | thanks!
Several good suggestions were sent my way - much appreciated. In my experience, any solution to a problem that gives a user write access to anything other than their own /home directories is a disaster waiting to happen (spoken as someone who has burned in past doing otherwise). So, I'll pursue some approaches that don't reequire the /lib access option. [[alternative HTML version

I'm looking at getting the Dev light applications from digium and I have 2 Createive Labs voip blasters. The voip blaster supports the G.723.1 codec. After looking at Gnome meeting it does not talk unless you have a quicknet card for it. Can I make calls using asterisk and the digium cards to the Voip blaster. ie. From PSTN to through the X100P through * into the Voip Blaster. (Voip Blaster

Sound cards for Centros
What sound cards are recognized by Centros? I have installed it on an old 400MHz IBM Aptiva that has Crystal Audio built-in. However it does not seem to recognize that, nor a Sound Blaster, nor a Sound Blaster 16 that I have tried. Any cheapo cards that it would recognize? Mike

creative VoIP blaster & *
Ok, I've googled for 15+ minutes, and have yet to find a usable answer, so I'm going to annoy everyone and ask here. I have, in my posession, a creative VoIP blaster. I have installed the fobbit LKM and I can see the device. Can I use it with asterisk in any meaningful way, shape, or form? I'd love to be able to buy an IP phone, ATA, or FXO card, but lack the funds at the moment

Samba and Win viruses
Hi, This may seem a fairly obvious question but I need to check it out. It's also fairly urgent so I apologise that I haven't made a good check of the FAQ's or mailing archives. We have a Solaris box with Samba installed. We are on a campus network where boxes that are infected are blocked from the network as a security measure. We have had our server blocked as it is probing port

music complexity
hi, Is it true the flac encoder can compress music better when the complexity of the music is low? I'm compressing some tunes of old MS DOS games (pc speaker, sound blaster 16 OPL3 chip music) and I saw a *huge* compression ratio (some files where only 1/3th of the original file in filesize after compressing to flac), so I was wondering if less complex music always means better compression.

x86_64, acml-3.5.0-gfortran64 and lme4
I am encountering segfaults when checking the lme4 package on an Athlon64 system if I use the acml blas. R was built as a 64-bit application using the GCC 4.0.3 compiler suite including gfortran. The version of acml is 3.5.0 gfortran64. I do not encounter the segfaults when I compile R with R's built-in BLAS. The errors occur in the first example in lme4 in a call to lmer. It looks like

Liveice & Icecast...help
I'm running FreeBSD 4.2. I downloaded and installed Icecast 1.3.10, Liveice, mpg123, and Lame. I know the Icecast streamer is working because I can feed it from WinAMP on my PC and listen to the stream somewhere else and it sounds fine. I know liveice is working too because Icecast shows that it connects and is sending audio to it. However when I listen to the stream on my PC with WinAMP

Trouble configuring R to use ACML
I am trying to get R to use the ACML BLAS, specifically the 'mp' version for multithreading. I have installed acml-4-4-0-gfortran-64bit I added /opt/acml4.4.0/gfortran64_mp/lib to $LD_LIBRARY_PATH. I ran: sudo ./configure --with-blas="-L/opt/acml4.4.0/gfortran64_mp/lib -lacml_mp" At the end of the configuration, the only external library listed is readline, and at the end

Wine 1.1.7: Sound regression?
I have recently formatted my system in order to install Intrepid Ibex, and I am now using it with Wine 1.1.7. I did a backup of the prefixes of the games I was using in Hardy / Wine up to 1.1.5, and imported them in my new installment. The games work normally, but the sound is crackling all the time for each of them; something which was not happening in my former installment. I have not noticed

compile R with ACML support | RHEL 4
Greetings - I'm trying to compile R under GNU/Linux (RHEL 4) on a multi-Opteron box, with ACML support. First, I downloaded and installed ACML 3.5 - GNU version, although I'm not entirely sure what the differences are - from the AMD website. The ACML libraries were installed to /opt/acml3.5.0/ Second, I ran ./configure --with-blas='-lacml' The configure went fine,

compiling 2.7.0 GNU/Linux | BLAS & Lapack query
Greetings - For a host of reasons I chose (was forced) to upgrade my multi-Opteron box from Fedora 7 -> Fedora 8. In the process, I also updated the ACML I had installed from 4.0.0 to 4.1.0. While I get no errors (that I can find) in the config -> make -> make install sequence, I'm pretty sure (based on some benchmarks) that I'm not getting BLAS and/or Lapack to compile in. So,

check stats fail | part III
For grins, tried rebuilding R 2.9.0 without using ACML 4.3.0. Config goes fine, make runs without any errors. make check - and - ta-dah! - no errors for stats. Everything seems to check out just fine. So, it seems as if R 2.9.0, ACML 4.3.0, and perhaps one/more things under CentOS don't play nice. Will trying unloading 4.3.0, installing 4.2.0 (which worked before on the Fedora box), and

problems compiling for RHEL 5.3 x86_64
Well, CentOS 5.3, which amounts to the same thing. I recently decided to upgrade my main research machine from Fedora Core 8 -> CentOS 5.3. Basically, I was looking to move to a distro with longer 'term-of-life' than the release schedule for Fedora currently allows. The machine is a multi-Opteron box, so both 32- and 64-bit apps natively supported. Since I do a lot of 'linear

Building R-devel with ACML
I'm trying to build R-devel with AMD's ACML. I downloaded version 3.0.0 64bit for gfortran (acml-3-0-0-gfortran-64bit.tgz) and copied the libraries to /usr/local/lib. When I configure R to build against the ACML library, how do I know if the library has been detected and will be used? I run 'configure' with the '--with-blas=-lacml' flag and am using gcc 4.0.2 (with
