Number of digits of a value for problem 7.31 RFAQ
Hello dear R users!
I did not find a function which gives information about the number of
digits of a value shown by R.
Do you know one?
I need it to solve the problem (see RFAQ 7.31)that 0.2==0.2+0.1-0.1 FALSE
The solution suggested in RFAQ is to use isTRUE(all.equal(0.2,0.2+0.1-0.1))
But if I want to compare inequality:
0.2<=0.2 +0.1-0.1 TRUE
but 0.2<=0.2 +0.1-0.1 FALSE
bad!

managing data and removing lines
Hi,
I am very new to R and I've been trying to work through the R book to gain a
better idea of the code (which is also completely new to me).
Initially I imputed my data from a text file and that seemed to work ok, but
I'm trying to examine linear relationships between gdist and gair, gdist and
gsub, m6dist and m6air, etc.
This didn't work and I think it might have something to do

problem of install.packages in windows (R 1.81)
Dear R users,
I have a problem in the configuration of R:
I just changed university, and my conection to the net is via a password, which
permits me to access the packages with no problem via the internet explorer
(version 6).
I just updated R to R 1.81, and I cannot download nether upgrade packages (and
many are not working with the update!!!).
I have been looking in the help and emails, and

R-helpers:
I am experiencing some odd behavior with the 'matrix' function that I have

Session logging in Windows98?
I'd like to log all console I/O for an entire session while maintaining
normal console I/O. I'm working in Windows98, RGui, R1.1.1. The sink()
function is not the answer since it diverts output from the console. In the
RFAQ I see references to "...save the contents of the interaction buffer to
a file..." and in the R-Help Archive "...just save the console output...".

gamma distribution don't allow negative value in GLMs?
Dear friends,
when i use glm() to fit my data, i use
glm(formula = snail ~ vegtype + mhveg + humidity + elevation + soiltem, *family
= Gamma(link = inverse),* data =a,))
It shows: error in eval(expr, envir, enclos) : *gamma distribution don't
allow negative value*.
But i use
result<-glm(formula = snail ~ vegtype + mhveg + humidity + elevation +
soiltem, family = poisson, data =a) #this

Curious subsetting behavior
I have a simple vector, called tmp that I want to subset based on another
vector called vec. Everything works as expected except for below where the
subsetting returns something other than the original data. Any ideas?

How to include an externally defined NULL value in lm
Hello!
I would love to be able to include an external variable to a lm call, I
mean something:
if(TRUE)
a<-freeny.x[,4]
else
a<-NULL
lm(freeny.y~freeny.x[,-4] +a)
but it does not work with a<-NULL, whereas
lm(freeny.y~freeny.x[,-4] +NULL)
I don't understand why and did not find an answer in the manuals... do
you see it? Any idea?
Thanks!!

Feature request: about lag(), which.min() and cat().
Hello
I'm only user of R and have many little knowledge in programming but I
permit to send you some whishes/suggestions for R.
which.min
like which(), which.min() should also include an argument arr.ind. Note
that one can have it with which(a==min(a), arr.ind=TRUE) but if there is
a reason to build a special function which.min, why not add also this
nice argument?

Ask for functions to obtain partial R-square (squared partial correlation coefficients)
The partial R-square (or coefficient of partial determination, or
squared partial correlation coefficients) measures the marginal
contribution of one explanatory variable when all others are already
included in multiple linear regression model.
The following link has very clear explanations on partial and
semi-partial correlation:

Using fortran code which call LAPACK subroutines
Hello
I'm trying to run a fortran code which use LAPACK subroutines. I think I
should use some points shown in the manual 5.5 Creating shared objects
but it is too technical for me :-(... Could anyone help me for the
procedure to do:
-which part of the manual is relevant for this type of question?
actually I'm speaking from writing R extensions, should I read R admin?

R plots pdf() does not allow spotcolors?
Hi
We are about to publish a book, which contains figures made with R
plots. An important detail that we did not take into account is that the
book will not be printed in 4 colors (cmyk mode), but only 2 (black
+"spotcolor"). The spotcolor we use is part of the big Pantone family.
The problem is that both pdf() and postscript() offer either rgb or
cmyk, but no spotcolors such as

R CMD check detects parse error, but in which file?
Hello
I looked on the archives but did not find answer for that...
Running R CMD check for a package, i get an error:
Error in parse(n = -1, file = file) : unexpected symbol at
3341: }
But how can I find which file is guilty? What is this 3342 referring to?
Finally the solution I found is to source() every file until I find the
file where the problem is... Is there some better way to do it?

lm: eval(parse(text=)) works on one side y/x but not on both?
Hi
My goal is to do a (multiple) regression, just knowing that my Y
variables will be the say k first variables of a matrix/data frame. I
thought I should do it with eval(parse)) but encounter a strange problem.
See:
lm(y~.-y, data=freeny) #that's what I want to do in the one equation case
#Problem is I don't know name of the variable... only that it is the
first one...

rattle(): unable to load shared library
Hi
I'm trying to install the rattle GUI on winwos 2000, with last version R 2.10.
I had a first problem using the rattle package, as it was asking pkg
XMl, which is no more in the CRAN repo. I instead simply install in
R/libraries the XML pkg from:
http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/RWin/bin/windows/contrib/2.10/
Maybe I mised something here... So now I was able to run the library(rattle)

coefficient of partial determination...partial r square [ redux]
If I'm not mistaken, partial R-squared is the R^2 of the quantities plotted
in a partial residual plot, so you can base the computation on that. Prof.
Fox's `car' package on CRAN has a function for creating those plots, but you
need to figure out the way to extract the quantities being plotted.
[In any case, the basic tools for doing such computations are all in R, and
it
